I like this system:

Code:
1 2	a
3 8	b	loser eliminated
4 7	c	loser eliminated
5 6	d	loser eliminated

winner a v	bye
loser a v	highest ranked winner e
mid winner	v	lowest ranked winner	f	loser eliminated

winner a	v	winner e	g
winner f	v	loser e	h	loser eliminated

winner g	v	bye
loser g	v	winner h	i	loser eliminated

winner g	v	winner i

- Week 1 - 1 v 4 (A)
- 2 v 3 (B)
- 5 v 8 (C)
- 6 v 7 (D)
Loser(C) & Loser(D) eliminated.

- Week 2 - Loser(A) v Winner(D) (E)
- Loser(B) v Winner(C) (F)
Loser(E) & Loser(F) eliminated.

- Week 3 - Winner(A) v Winner(F) (G)
- Winner(B) v Winner(E) (H)
Loser(G) & Loser(H) eliminated.

- Week 4 - Winner(G) v Winner(H)

This was the system that was used in '96. '95 was similar, except i believe there wasn't the cross-over phase used in Week 2, so, there was the possibility of Week 1 rematches in Week 3

The original didn't have a cross over but they changed it.

AFL system is similar to the main gripe on the NRL system in that the minor premiers win their first finals game, get a week off then lose their 3rd game and they're gone.

I dont really like the McIntyre system that much either. Too many games where its not close (1 v 8). The games should be between more competitive teams but where the top teams have some protection (some incentive to try and get into the top 4).

All the ideas i read were interesting but to natalie's daddy, that system goes for to long. 5 weeks is to long and there are just to many byes. Already there is talk about a bye being a disadvantage. And running through the system it has too many posibilities to have the same teams playing each other throughout the finals.

Marshall_magic, i like your idea cause the games are closer and the 1 and 2 team get the bye at the start but as was already written there is a good chance of 2 getting eliminated in the 2nd round (all it takes is 4 and 5 winning in the 2nd round and they are out).

Definetly need the 8 as it provides more teams, more revenue, more games. We claim quality wise its not that good but thats cause 1 v's 8. Below you find you dont have teams that far apart on the ladder so the games should be more competitive.

This is the best but its just the AFL format in a slightly different form. Below is the AFL format which is clearly the best around (only prob with it is the byes as has already been said, but i havent seen one that is perfect yet). 1-4 get the home final advantage right through to the final. 5-8 are in elimination rounds from the start and all matches are between teams that are close together on the ladder. Plus the top 4 teams have no chance of being eliminated in the first round.

Yeah, I agree with you yosh64. Home ground advantage needs to be extended through to weeks 2 and 3 as well.
