According to Buzz we are paying Val Holmes $1.1M per year.
So we sell Lomax who was on 800 - 850 to a team that is paying him 700 - 750 and we pay $1.1M for Holmes.
Sorry but that is desperation, insanity and stupidity rolled into one.
If we are such an unattractive place to go to and have to always pay overs, then sustained success is impossible.
The current model is broken and has to change.

That the relevant bit from the article and yes it’s very broken . Rather than fix it the league want 2 more teams that will make it worse they need to fix the current lopsided rosters with a draft. We all know before the season starts that 4 teams will be in the 8 so 12 teams are fighting for the remaining 4 spots. For us at the end of 6 rounds baring a miracle we are probably finished for 2025. Sad.

thats ridiculous - perhaps a spike in year 1 but was routinely reported as 850k across the 3x years. We lose a couple games and the vultures swoop to compound. In saying all this - he needs a v strong performance vs storm and to kick all his goals. The fact that we are spreading the ball and scoring on edges means more difficult kicks - gotta nail em

Lomax was worth $1m on yesterdays performance. Everyone saying we won't get a win till we play Eels in Rd 5.....based on yesterday's performance from the Eels we won't beat them...they showed a lot of resilience and toughness which we don't have!!
Thinking the same .......

Was told to relax and see what happened when I pointed out this is the way it would likely go when Kyle re-signed. It's clear as day Flano is going to make sure Kyle stays in first grade, even if he becomes the 14 (where he will be completely ineffective as he offers zero variation or speed). We will most likely lose Liddle who has a mutual option for next year.. likely won't be activated with the plan of Kyle moving to hooker. Especially now that we're on the hunt for another half to partner Atkinson.. Kyle will be moved to hooker.. Liddle is better than reserve grade standard and will therefore leave.

The only way I'd be comfortable with letting Liddle leave is if we signed Blake Mozer.. but it won't happen as there's too much competition for him and our club is terrible at selling a vision to a player and/or creating a pathway. If Flano does in fact choose Kyle as his hill to die on, he'll fall on his sword because Kyle is a reserve grader plain and simple. He'll lose a huge part of my support if he goes down that route too.. and it's looking more and more likely it's the way he'll go.

Why? He has no competition coming through the lower grades and Cook will already be gone.

In fact, the thinness of the junior 9 position is a worry for the future.
you would guess Flano will be our 14 in 2026 if Illias and the 2026 Sharkboy work well together

Covering hooker and halves is so valuable

Lomax had a crack yesterday and it was a good watch, in much the same vein as he did for us on several occasions last year. But, lets not get too carried away here... yes, the Eels got a sniff yesterday because the Bulldogs were short and struggling to get out of their own end on merit (missing Burton's kicking game variation and Kikau's runs through the middle third). This was the perfect recipe for Lomax to essentially go back to the wing and become a second full back during the second half, doing his best to try and get them home off the back of them having that sniff of the Bulldogs not being 100% on. In the end it was ill-discipline and silly penalties on the Eels part that got the Bulldogs home ...

... but if we look at the first two games, and also their February trial against the Tigers, he was in a battered and bruised team from the outset with his head down (I think he learnt this attitude from playing under a certain captain). This will happen again.

Another thing I also noticed, especially in the first half, every time an attacking kick went to Lomax's side, the Bulldogs had three men either backs to him or swarming all over him if he did take the catch. Coaches have worked this one out. He's not been as effective on those 5th tackle plays so far this year. But the effort plays are unquestionable.

I do agree though on one thing - if the Eels do get a sniff that we're vulnerable, like they did yesterday against the Bulldogs, we will lose the game. There is still a lot of muddy water to pass under the bridge between now and Saturday week though (and hopefully that water turns clean for us)...

As for Val - he will probably win us more games on merit as time goes on than what Zac would have (and ever did even during his breakout year last season)... and there is no way he is on $1.1m a season. When articles like this are allowed to be published - this is where we need actual transparency about player values under the salary cap.

Val Holmes signed a 3 year deal worth 2.5mil? Where did Buzz get 1.1mil? I am pretty sure Buzz's column is what they are worth not what they are being paid because if it was what they were paid, the top teams are over the cap.

and there you go ... three years at $2.5m (basically the same money as what Gutho would be getting per season).

Cook only has a year to go after this so they can keep Liddle and when Cook retires they have Liddle and Kyle sharing hooker. That makes more sense. Cook will be in his last NRL year and could get injured so good to have the 3 hookers.

Genuinely interested in what people see in Kyle? Tries hard.. that's great.. but so does Lawrie, for example. What about his actual output/ability makes people think we will be anywhere near competitive with the top sides in the competition in say 1, 2 or 3 years time with Kyle in the side? What point of difference does Kyle bring? People say he can organise.. based on what? His unremarkable attacking play and lack of spark does not automatically make him an "organising half". We constantly in fact look disjointed, unorganised, unimaginative and directionless. Add to this he doesn't have a long kicking game, a good pass selection/vision.. he doesn't bring much to the side at all in my view. As I said, tries hard, but what about his actual game makes him above reserve grade standard.. and more to the point, what about him makes him a potential contributor to an actual top 4 team in future as that is where we should want to be going?
