After seeing the success with the crowd at Waikato Stadium I just wanted to put together a Stadium list with Location and Capacity.

If anyone could help with this as it prepares us for the World Cup in 2008. Would love to see some of these games in NZ.

NZ should host a World Cup on their own, leaving 2008 to Australia. I'd rather see 2 cups with decent crowds rather than one with great crowds followed by yet another one in the UK.

Some of those figures are a tad off
Waikato can only fit around 25,000 which is around the same as Ericsson Stadium.

With temporary seating Waikato Stadium held about 30k for the Maori game, but i think that had a negative effect on Ericssons capacity. Rotorua is slightly smaller than the listed figure, the Cake Tin had 39k for the Lions game.

I didnt think it was that big. What was the offical crowd for the eels/warriors game tonight?
Facts and Figures

  • Capacity of Waikato Stadium:
    26,350
  • Cost to re-develop:
    $40m
  • Waikato Stadium turf type Loksand, is a reinforced sand based turf with some artificial fibres
  • Loksand turf is a first in New Zealand and Australia
  • The new covered stand (Brian Perry Stand) has a capacity of 12,000 and cost 40m
  • The new Wel Networks stand holds 8000 people
  • The Greenzone (embankment) 5000
  • And the goal line terrace 800
More Useful Facts

The Loksand playing surface is a mix of sand and a type of nylon thread, which knits together holding the sand particles solid while allowing grass roots to attach. It allows the nutrients to flow down via the nylon strands to the deep-seated roots. This results in a turf surface that is far more stable than plain grass, but which is also sympathetic to the players. It is strong enough to accommodate large numbers of people and trucks, and soft enough for the players. Access more detailed pitch information here.

There are 20,000 new moulded seats at the Stadium. The total ground capacity is 25,000 with 9,000 covered seats, 10,500 uncovered, 800 at the northern goal line (Tristram St end ) and 5,000 standing capacity at the green zone terrace (Seddon Road end)

Did you know?

  • the new Loksand turf at the Waikato Stadium is the first full surface in Australasia
  • there are five floor levels in the new stand including the management office, players changing facilities, retail concessions, function lounge, corporate lounge, floor and media facilities
  • the Stadium can be used for musical concerts, conferences, product launches, weddings, team building events, cultural and religious festivals and other sporting activities
  • there is function room capacity for 350 persons, pub fashion, finger food or two rooms with banquet style dinner for 165 and 175, and one room banquet style for 88 persons
  • the light towers are 50 m in height and there are 250 bulbs within each head costing $300 to replace. There will be 1500 lux of light level on the field
  • the Stadium is Smokefree
  • no nails used on site
  • there is a large replay screen of 46sq m in size available at the major rugby games
  • you can have a tour of the stadium, call 07 958 5800 for details

So what stadiums would the Rugby League World Cup use? Obviously Auckland, Christchurch , Wellington to get games but any other cities or stadiums you would recommend?

Maybe Waikato Stadium in Hamilton after getting over 17 thousand there for a wet , fogged in game on the weekend. I think Eden park is to big for Rugby League and maybe stick with North Harbour or Ericsson Stadium.

Dunedin, Hamilton, Albany, Rotorua or even the stadiums in New plymouth or Palmerston North are all big enough to host pool games.
They'll get more people watching games than places like Adelaide or Hobart especially with the large polynesian communitys.

as someone stated earlier NZ needs to host there own WC totaly seperate from Australia, this would be better for the game as a whole in both nations.

I think that an RLWC Semi or Final could sell out Eden Park. It did it before, in 1988 or 1992 (can't remember which)>

Pool matches should be played at North Harbour or Ericsson for the Auckland region, and use the Super 12 venues for the rest of the country.

I think that Jade Stadium in Christchurch needs to get one or two Kiwi games. Devloping RL on the South Island should be a top priority for the NZRL.
