Totally agree. Dragons have looked like a team sent out to do a job. Panthers look like a team sent out to enjoy the sport.
Unfortunately we have some players that have had the good skills coached out of them; they no longer enjoy themselves and can't play what is in front of them. Merrin, Norman and Hunt come to mind and should be off-loaded. Dufty should be a backup bench player at best.

I like our potential backline of say:
1. Ramsey
2. Matt Feagai
3. Lomax
4. Max Feagai
5. Ravalawa and later Schiller
6. Sullivan or Dufty
7. Clune

but I do fear our forwards need to be given an influx of about 3 good players maybe 4 if De Belin is not available to play in 2021. So our coaching staff have to take a look at what is available on the open market. Who can they work with to fit with our culture and who has the skills we need to improve our squad.

Looks like we're, finally, cleaning out the dead wood and 'hangers on' from our club. Some really astute appointments being made to not only fix our club in the short term but to ensure its survival into the distant future.

It amazes me that within a few weeks of Mc85 departure, our whole football department has taken on a whole new look. No longer there are the hangers on and the coaching pretenders.

I must say Webby has been a God-send for us and must be congratulated onbwhaf has transpired over the last couple of months. It would have been easy to just come in and go with the flow.

Sowie is a very cruciak appointment, and for me, you have to look behind the meaning of his consultancy. After all, would he need to be appointed for Hunt and Norman? Maybe, but to me, the adage of 'you cant teach an old dog new tricks' applies here. Whereas, our young halves will gain a multitude of experience and knowledge under his guideance.

The next curious thing will be the appointments of CC and JF coaches. I gather these wont be announced until confirmation of competition next year. These appointments will also be crucial for our developing players.

Agree on Webb slayer and the "hangers on".

It seems that he entered the Dragons den and communicated what changes needed to be made, why and how which is basically a 180 degree turn around.

On Sowie, if Norman stays, I hope their tight and what a way for him to return after his exit.

I'm looking forward to seeing that backline. I know it would be a work in progress and take time to gel but there's some excitement there!

P.S - Color change out of respect for you possm!

Soward returns to Dragons in consultancy role

St George Illawarra 2010 premiership-winning playmaker Jamie Soward will return to the Dragons in a kicking coach capacity ahead of the club's 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership campaign.

Soward's consultancy role follows the recent finalisation of the Dragons' 2021 football department, including Matt Elliott and Peter Gentle as assistants to incoming head coach Anthony Griffin and the introduction of Dragons Academy.

Soward played 140 NRL games for the Dragons between 2007 and 2013, and remains the club's leading pointscorer to this day (977 – 39 tries, 398 goals and 25 field goals).

"I'm extremely excited to return to the Dragons after a number of years away from the club," Soward said.

"It's a proud moment and great opportunity for me to be able to work alongside such a high quality squad.

"The Dragons have always held a special part in my heart and I'm looking forward to making more memories in my new role at the Red V."

Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran explained the rationale behind Soward's return to the club.

"We are delighted that Jamie has agreed to return to the club, given his experience as a former Dragons premiership winner and New South Wales Origin representative," Haran said.

"Jamie's focus will be centred on kicking, whether to help develop individual kicking games or instil best practice techniques as far as goal kicking is concerned, among a vast number of other aspects.

"The relationship that Jamie and Anthony Griffin established during their time at the Penrith Panthers together was another positive factor considered when making this appointment.

"We will now continue to explore a number of different consultancy options to further complement the club's 2021 program."

I must and find it strange that we've suddenly gone from, 'couldn't afford to pay out Mc85' to basically paying out Mc85, to hiring a new head coach, 2 assistants with abundant experience, set up an Acadamy, hired Sowie as a consultant (I'm guessing a few more will follow), ovehauled our fitness and performance staff and probably a few other things as well, all in the space of a couple of months.

Weird!!

It certainly is weird Dragonslayer , the only logical conclusion that I can come to is that Bruuuce Jr. has discovered the PIN number to daddy’s bankcard .

Let’s hope that he has enough grey matter to splurge out on a few key signings - preferably in the forwards .

No we’ve always had the money.
We have a powerful And wealthy leagues club in St George and a Very wealthy 50% owner of the SGI entity.

I would think McMoron the coach was into the ear of the wealthy owner as to why it’s the players fault.

And BTW where is that moron of a wanna coach. All his mates have gone awol about his being a good bloke and he hasn’t even got past first base on any job he has applied for.

Dragons premiership-winner Jamie Soward appointed to club's coaching staff

The Dragons have turned to the man who spearheaded their drought-breaking 2010 premiership to reboot their halves, with new coach Anthony Griffin appointing Jamie Soward to his staff.

Soward was the game managing general who polarised fans yet became the perfect man to deliver Wayne Bennett's game plan in that famous 2010 team.

His kicking game in particular was the envy of the competition, with Soward perfecting the art of forcing opponents to start their sets deep in their own territory, grinding them into the dirt.

In many ways it makes him the perfect man for this Dragons side, with Griffin inheriting two big name halves who have rarely played well alongside each other.

Ben Hunt and Corey Norman have both been heavily criticised over the past two seasons but both are Origin players, so there's no denying their talent.

Soward has been given the job of finding the key to unlock it, with a focus on game management. Choosing and executing the right kicks at the right time will be a focus and few would deny Soward is an expert in that field.

2020 Team Reviews: St George Dragons 2020 Review
"I'm not going in there to reinvent the wheel with Corey and Ben," Soward told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I'm going in there to help refine their game, help them make better decisions and also teach those young guys coming through like Jayden Sullivan, Junior Amone and also Adam Clune.

"I'll try and help show them how you can wrestle back momentum and how you can keep momentum with your kicking game and game management."

While the Soward appointment makes sense from the point-of-view that he's a respected ex-Dragons player and has the skills the Dragons lack down to a fine art, there's another side to it that makes for a hell of a reconciliation story.

Soward finished his career under Griffin at the Panthers and the pair fell out spectacularly.

In August 2018 as a guest on Nine's Sports Sunday, Soward was blunt in backing Penrith's decision to axe Griffin and bring back Ivan Cleary.

"I only spent a short time with Anthony Griffin, but from what I found he was very poor in his communication skills," Soward said at the time.

"The game plans were not conducive to the style of football that those guys out there wanted to play and we only saw the best out of the Penrith Panthers when they got behind.

"You'll see the players play a lot freer now."

Soward added that Griffin had "underachieved" at both the Panthers and the Broncos, where he was head coach from 2011-2014, and had falsely taken credit for the talented young players he introduced to first grade.

"They had won junior competitions. The academy that they built was all in place before Anthony Griffin got there," Soward said.

"This is what I took offence to - in 2014 we were one game short of the grand final. That to me seemed like a pretty good place [to be in].

"They debuted a lot of juniors that had won the 20s competition. 2015 in the NRL side wasn't great but they still had plenty of young guys come through."

Soward told the Herald that his feelings about Griffin had changed since the pair started working together for Nine radio.

"Anthony and I had a chat working at 2GB the last year and a half," Soward said.

"I've said it before publicly, I don't have many regrets throughout my career but one of those was that I didn't understand or see the game how he did.

" ... I'm very thankful. We've both shown there are no hard feelings there and we've loved working together at 2GB and we're going to continue to work hard to get the Dragons back inside that eight."

How Anthony Griffin secured Jamie Soward as St George Illawarra’s kicking coach
Jamie Soward had a falling out with Anthony Griffin at Penrith in 2016 but weekly chats on 2GB about footy tactics helped the pair mend their relationship, opening the door to reunite at the Dragons.

Jamie Soward has revealed how conversations with Anthony Griffin about tactics while the pair worked together at 2BG radio proved the catalyst for Griffin to hire him as St George Illawarra’s kicking coach for 2021.

Soward will reunite with his former Penrith coach in a consultancy role, working with the club’s halves and rising players on game management.

The 2010 premiership-winning Dragons playmaker will focus on kicking, both in general play and conversations.

Soward’s relationship with Griffin has improved since 2016 when they fell out at Penrith after the veteran coach didn’t re-sign him in his final season.

The pair have since mended bridges while working together in the media, especially during their time at 2GB.

“Talking to Hook about each game for half an hour on a Saturday night – that was probably the catalyst for this job,” Soward said.

“We’d sit down and talk about players, styles, what goes into games.

“I’d pick his brain on certain players in the NRL and how you would approach that and he would ask about some of the players that I’ve seen coming through the Canterbury Cup while working for Channel 9.

“I guess it has been a long conversation in the making and I’m happy Anthony has got the Dragons job, and now the hard work starts.”

Griffin feels Soward’s proven record as a game manager can help ignite the Dragons’ current halves pairing, Ben Hunt and Corey Norman.

Hunt and Norman have struggled to produce their best and a specialist coach could help them improve.

Soward played 140 NRL games for the Dragons between 2007 and 2013 while he remains the club‘s leading pointscorer with 977 points from 39 tries, 398 goals and 25 field goals.

The retired halfback has added to his skills post-football with various roles in the media, including an analyst at NRL.com alongside fellow Dragons assistant and ex-Penrith coach Matt Elliott.

Soward is looking forward to working with Norman and Hunt on the finer skills in their game.

“Part of my job will be to understand how Corey sees the game at five-eighth,” he said.

“His running game is certainly his strength and he is very talented as well.

“Hopefully Matty Elliott’s game plan around getting Corey involved can get the best out of him.

“Ben is also such a great runner of the footy and we are going to need that if we are going to get back into the top eight.

“I’ll play a small part. This is Hook’s team and Matty Elliott’s attack, so for me if I can listen to those two guys and learn what they know about the game, then put some stuff on with my kicking and weaknesses in other teams.

“One thing I know about Hook is that he is going to have everyone super fit and competing and that is going to be the important thing.”

Soward plans to juggle his Dragons consultancy role with his media commitments at 2GB, NRL.com and Channel 9.

“I won’t change anything that I do in the media,” he said.

“One thing I’ve really enjoyed is being able to just watch the game and look at how teams play.

“The small part that I’ll play at the Dragons won’t affect me. If there are games that don’t go the right way, then I have to call it how I see it.”

Maybe a lot of perks and lower salaries have freed up funds to be spent on things outside the cap.

Maybe front ending some contracts in 2020 and bring through some juniors - who are on lower salary - has freed up some salary cap for season 2021.

Weird!!

..........or just clever?

From a financial perspective. like for like:
  • Elliott-Young
  • Griffin - McGregor
  • Payout McGregor- Flanagan
  • Strength & conditioning swap
I think it was well set up, in that they gave McGregor an out (I need to pick my own team so I’m leaving), so he could save face, and until he did, he wasn’t getting the control he wanted. Therefore, the “ we can’t afford to line” was possibly used a negation tool to force McGregor’s hand.

The Academy certainly makes sense, as they were using the term ‘development club‘ regularly last year in press conferences etc.. and support for it reinforced by Penrith recent success; the academy, also makes the board look good and takes way some of the criticism sting aimed at them in relation to McGregor’s 2 year extension.

The first step was changing the coach then the puzzle all fell into place....

The Academy was part of GUS's recommendation that they need. Every club is just about starting something similar. Titans set up one but had no one to run it before.
We just need the appropriate personnel to make it successful that is where Hook will be strongly involved which is a good thing.
"Academy" is the new corporate feel good buzz word here for NRL that they are copying from overseas.
And I am sick of hearing every commentator with the new whizz bang phrase, (well I can only speak for Channel 9) "Playing eyes up footy"
