Hook had us fit and that was the end of it. There was no game plan. Even Gus made fun of that while he was still our coach. He liked to play simple risk free footy and hope that we could win with superior fitness. Which is why his record against top 4 teams was pathetic. His superior roster beat the shit teams and that was it.
He could probably be a great resource for a club that used him the right way. Not anywhere near game plans, attacking or defensive structure s.
I think to be fair to Hook, not only did he get us fit, but he was also big on playing aggressive football, our forwards played some really aggressive football under him, both with and without the ball. I will never forget the game against St George in 2018 when we smashed their (more fancied pack) into the turf to take first place. Not only our fitness but our aggression and never say die attitude also won us games.
I have heard those coached by Bennett (such as Wendell Sailor) say on more that one occasion that Bennett also never coached attack. He believed that if the forwards dominated, you had skilled halves and you earned good field position then you’d score points and win. That might have worked well in the past but defenses are too good now.
Griffin had plenty of short comings (and I don’t want to turn this thread into a debate about coaches), but I expect Griffin would do a much better job at Brisbane than Seibold. The Broncos look unfit, lack self belief and play with no aggression despite the size of their pack.
