Former Panthers in the NRL

I live up here in the Hunter. Trust me Bennett is NOT well thought of. Ripped the guts out of a (well working) junior development pathways. Was not interested in enhancing partnerships with the local community, (something that Newy has always done real well)

Ripped the guts out of their salary cap, signing up aging players to top shelf deals. Took years to right the cap.

Ran out of his wife, the mother of two very disabled sons, with the office receptionist.....(in a working class community like Newy this is frowned upon). Basically running away from his fatherly responsibilities.

Then when the going got too tough, and the mess too great. Ran away. Back to Brisbane with their unlimited funds, and the cream of a state's juniors.

Ivan is streets ahead of Bennett.
The adventures of little Wayne have bugger all to do with the professional life of big Wayne. He may well be a merkin for what happened in his personal life, but she may have been a merkin as well. Not really relevant though.

I personally think he has been pretty blessed for the most part with teams he has been given, but it's also obvious the bloke can coach. The salary cap issues he cops blame for are as much on the clubs management as they are him, not really his job to manage the cap.

Newcastle's best season in the last twenty years came under Bennett.

Correct.

Overblown his role at Newcastle. Tinkler was a problem and Nathan Brown didn't handle the job correctly either.

I'm keen to see how Flanagan handles the Dragons. I don't see a rebuild. Hunt is an issue but otherwise its in the quick fix category. Plenty of talent. If Cleary makes 2014 prelim then Flanagan should be in the 8 by 2025.

Bennett when contracted has one job.

Attempt to win a comp during that contract.

If his employer chooses not to extend his tenure he has no responsibility for future performance.

Double so when they know if they don't contract him someone else will.

It is management's job to succession plan.

Once he is at a competitor why wouldn't he want his former employer weakened?

He left StGI in a similar mess. Even though he won a comp when he was there it has taken years for them to recover and they haven’t got there yet.
Souths look like they are struggling after his time there as well.
It looks like a recurring issue to me. Newcastle, StGI, South’s, hopefully the Dolphins don’t follow the same path. Instant one off success does not make him a great club coach, just a winning one.

So what we are saying is, when Bennett is at a club it is successful, when he leaves and is no longer involved in the decision making, the club is a failure. Correlation is no guarantee of causation but maybe, he isn't the problem.

Premiership coaches 1998 to present

1998: Bennett - three more comps
1999: Chris Anderson. Storm went to shit and eventually got Bellamy. Had a joke of a stint at the Roosters.
2000: Bennett, see above
2001: Hagan. Lol. Knights with a spoon in 2005.
2002: Stuart, gone by 2006. Did f**k all in the NRL for a decade. Roosters with a spoon in 2009.
2003: Lang, let go in 2006. Horrible at Souths. Penrith with a spoon in 2007.
2004: Folkes, gone in 2008 with a spoon.
2005: Shenius, sub 50% career win rate. If Bennett cops shit for having the cattle Sheens must be a really lucky bloke.
2006: Bennett
2007: Bellamy, cheat comp
2008: Hasler
2009: Cheato
2010: Bennett, the hack at it again.
2011: Hasler, gone at end of season. Did ok with the Dogs before crippling the cap.
2012: Bellamy, finally a legit comp
2013: Robbo, accused of needing superstars.
2014: McGuire, gone by 2017. Sub 50% win rate, given the flick by the Tigpies.
2015: Green, gone by 2020.
2016: Flanagan, Peptides for all!
2017: Bellamy
2018: Robbo, had the cattle I guess
2019: Robbo, the cattle backed up
2020: Bellamy, Cam Smith?
2021: Ivan
2022: Ivan
2023: Ivan, the bloke leaves clubs in a bad state. Warriors made the finals once in a decade. Tigers multiple spoons after leaving. Not a good club coach due to criteria mentioned in this thread.

If Bennett isn't a good club coach I'd like to know who is.

I took the Luai thing as - he has a new third party deal (good)
- Best taking the p155 out of the media and to a lesser extent the Tigs, having himself just declined their alleged generous offer.
