Fox Sports could have more content to show on their new dedicated NRL channel after entering into secret negotiations with the Seven Network about the prospect of simulcasting this year's Rugby League World Cup.
As it stands, Seven has the Australian rights for the tournament, including the free-to-air broadcast, subscription, online, mobile and digital platforms. The Olympic network has also been appointed to undertake the host broadcast for international television for all the games played in Australia.
A total of 14 teams will play 28 games during a five-week period from October 27 to December 2 with Fox expressing interest in simulcasting at least some of them. Such an arrangement would provide valuable content for Fox's 24-hour dedicated league channel, Fox League, while reducing the costs for Seven of going solo.
It could also potentially open up the prospect of Fox and Seven sharing on-air talent, opening the door for caller Andrew Voss to return to free-to-air TV.
Regardless, Seven powerbrokers are already casting their eyes over potential callers and panelists for their coverage. We're hearing ABC Grandstand's Andrew Moore heads a shortlist, while Triple M's Dan Ginnane is also highly regarded. NSW coach Laurie Daley, who just signed a new deal with Seven, will likely be involved, while former Blues Craig Wing and Willie Mason could also get a start.
The current simulcast arrangement between Nine and Fox of NRL matches has helped the pay TV network steadily increase its audience share.
