Foxtel query

There I was on the couch watching Sports Tonight on Saturday, when the Eagles vs Hawks segment came on.

The Minister for Household Finances watched it with her usual indifference and then promptly stunned her critics (i.e me and the dog) by saying - "Hmmm, 10pts down to the Eagles was pretty good for Hawthorn... You would like to have seen that one, you can get Foxtel if you like."

In all honesty, I've never even asked before, assuming that I'd be more successful in obtaining funding were I to put in a request for the purchase of ecstacy tablets! T'was a plan so cunning that I didn't even know I had a plan in place - don't ask and ye shall receive.

Anyhow, I'm good to go with a little funky cold medina, but I'm not about to sign-up until its confirmed that Foxtel will be getting AFL games in 2007. I've lost rtrack of TV rights developments, but last I'd heard no deal had been struck re: pay TV and the talk was that Fox may have been set to dump its FoxFooty channel.

Anyone know anything more?

Also, does anyone have Foxtel with the IQ Multiroom? I'd like to know how much the multiroom equipment costs AND can you watch whatever channel you wish to from the second set, or does it merely relay the image that is on ther main set?

lol Kev

Does Fox Footy have their 3-4 games yet? Nope. Is the rumour that Fox Footy is going to be culled? Yep.

Now, what people seem to believe is that the threat of killing off FF is to try and force 7 & 10 to the table. Fox Sports are trying to cheat 7 & 10, as all they are asking for is what they initially agreed to pay as their part of PBL's attempt to gain the rights. At the end of the day, even if FF goes, they are bringing in Fox Sports 3, so the coverage of games will still be adequate, it's just a lot of the other programing will dissapear. Which in all honesty, besides League teams, Last time they met & WLF is not a huge loss anyway.

Thanks for that, Craig.

So your advice would be to sign-up before the Minister decides to focus immediate internal revenue expenditure on the backyard garden?

Oh for sure, especially given it was her idea! Leaving you completely blame free

:)

The only reason I don't have fox is because of where we live, once we've moved out into a house that is one of the first things I will be getting installed.

At the end of the day, Fox Sports needs AFL for Victorian subscriptions, the FTA stations are not going to show 8 games per week, and there is no real competition in Pay TV - We essentially have 1 provider and a number of carriers.

It's ON, young man!!!

Or, at least, it will be come August 8 when they can get their pompous butts out to my residual to complete the installation!

Its not bad at the moment.

You sign-up for the first month with the platinum package and they waive the installation fee of $78 (and also the IQ installation fee of $125).

You road test the full package for the month, then ease back to your preferred combination from there (in my case, basic + sports).

The biggest challenge for me will be coordinating my existing equipment. I want to keep the HD set top box in action for the free-to-air and also need to figure out how to get my DVD recorder to record from the Foxtel IQ box.

Waiting a month will be hard... I'm ready to go now!

Just in time for the finals so you can watch the Mighty Tigers :)

If you'll be at work when they come ... Leave clear instructions for them, and they will set it up exactly how you want.

I figured out my mums setup for her, but it took me a good few hours lol (Her needs were quite spectactular though, she wanted the vcr hooked up to record both, the dvd recorder to record both etc lol)

I'm hip to the hep of your Mother's hop.

There's nothing quite like covering all bases and allowing for all possible eventualities, regardless of practicality.

(You should have seen me hooking up my new TV, Set top box, playstation and dvd recorder combo back in January. I had leads up the yin yang and clearly ran linking options that were surplus to need, but by god I got the bastards working together!)

I'll leave that to the free-to-air set and while away a dull September with EPL games.

Go you little Pudlians!

I can't for the life of me understand why they would want to do otherwise. :?

Try being a pompey fan....

About 1 game a month. And thats only when we play the big sides so its usally a 3-0 result :( Hopefully this season i'll get to see it a bit more.

Kev im sure you will LOVE fox footy. I usually watch bits of Richmonds wins over the next week, which is always good. nospam29 is a great show, especially 'stump the ump' on Tuesdays and for me Wednesdays are best with TW.

Now that I've signed up, I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.

27 days and counting until instalation date.

Its sorely testing the little patience I have.

I was going to ask if you had the IQ box.

Yeah, at $15 a month its a little indulgent, but at the end of the day I thought that I can easy spend $3.75 a day on coffee, so $3.75 a week for the box isn't a massive deal.

And given that they're waiving the $125 installation fee (for the IQ box alone, seriously it is only an alternate set top box after all), it made it easier to take up the option.

I also hear that its not difficult to link the IQ box to my dvd recorder, so from next season I'll burn a copy of each game to a disc.

What package do you have?

And you're based in Melbourne!

When I was in Ballarat I'd hit the G or the Dome for all Hawk home games, so missing this is clearly the worst aspect of living in Canberra.

Gotta admit, I do know how hard it must be.

When I moved to sydney one of the first things I made Brook do was put in Fox Footy so I wouldn't miss any Richmond games lol

I get by now, but only because obviously I'm back home. Sometimes those of us in Melb don't know how lucky we are.

I've got foxtel linked up to my dvd recorder easy enough, doubt the IQ will be much different, although dont know how you could get the games that are saved onto the actual IQ transferred to your dvd recorder. The foxtel guy should be able to help you out with that.

Im on the package that has everything except movies. Dont know what its called, but but yeah, everything except movies (although we do get 'mindgames' for $5.95 a month which has trivia, sports trivia and another sort of trivia each day, lol fills in the hours.)

And make sure you get the foxtel magazine. Well i think its handy anyway, even though theres a TV guide (EPG) that can be accessed through foxtel.

All up i think our package costs about $80-$85. Not too bad.

I'm planning to link the IQ box to the dvd recorder with an SVIDEO cable. My thinking is that to transfer a game to my dvd recorder for burning to a disc, I would simply have to have the game in playback mode on the IQ box and recording to the recorder. Alternatively, I could just bypass saving to the IQ box, and simply sacve direct to the recorder when the game is replayed during the week.

I need to get a better picture of how things interlink.

I do like the fact that with the iQ box you can apparently set-up series downloads in one easy move. Looking forward to getting American Chopper episodes this way.

Yeah, we looked at movies, but didn't see the point in it. World Movies looked okay, but the others didn't thrill me, given we keep up with new stuff quite cheaply via VideoEzy dockets each month. They were offering the choice of free movie channels for 3 months or free installation and it was an easy choice to run with the latter, particularly when the free install extended to the IQ box.

Fully intend to get the magazine each month, Old Son!

It'll cost us around $70 a month for basics+sports+IQ+magazine.

I'm happy with that.

Not happy with the waiting, however.

This is bullsh*t, clearly they need to hire more installers!

That does seem like pretty good value Kev. With IQ, I've never really strongly considered it on the assumption it would cost a fortune. 70 per month, 16.15 a week is really not that bad for the features it provides.

Yeah, I toyed with the idea of just going with a normal box and getting an extra normal box for the bedroom, but was put off by the thought of having to pay installation and the ongoing monthly cost for the extra box.

The Minister was leaning toward a normal box, but at the last minute I signed-on for an IQ box, thinking that an extra $3.75 a week wouldn't bankrupt us.

All the documentation around the IQ box talks a good game, but I'll advise you further about how good it comes up in practice come August.
