Get a grip tp all those saying no bigg loss!
Every great player that leaves we get people saying 'piss off we wont miss you' type crap but in reality he is one of our best players and we want the best players in our comp.

Love or hate them we are a worse comp for not having Gaz, Lote and if SBW and JT go them aswell.

Whilst I would hope Thurston doesnt go, money talks....

European law and English cricket
EU ruling could spell end to Kolpaks

July 22, 2008
The number of Kolpak players in county cricket could be set for a drastic reduction after the European Union decided on a new interpretation of the employment law that has brought about a huge influx of players from South Africa and the Caribbean.

Under the rules of the Cotonou Treaty, free trade exists between the European Community and many African, Pacific and Caribbean countries, and in 2004, the Czech handball player, Maros Kolpak, won a ruling from the European Court of Justice which allowed him to play professionally in Germany without be classed as a foreigner.

That set a precedent that has had a major impact on English cricket, with players such as Jacques Rudolph, Martin van Jaarsveld and Omari Banks choosing to ply their trade in England rather than seek international honours for South Africa or West Indies.

A similar situation exists in French rugby union, which has up to 150 South Africans on its books, and as a result, a campaign was launched by the Central Council of Physical Recreation. It has resulted in the EU, under French presidency, ruling that the Cotonou Treaty was designed for the free trade of goods and services and should not be regarded as free movement of labour.

It promises to be a significant development in the ECB's battle to reduce the number of Kolpak players in county cricket, and a spokesman said: "The ECB have noted the recent developments and are looking at the possible implications of that."
One possible upshot would be for existing Kolpak players to be permitted to complete their existing contracts, but for future signings to be regarded as overseas players.

It would be near impossible to set up a proper transfer agreement between two different sports.

No it wouldn't. You make a player sign a contract with the NRL when they first go pro (get paid to play) - if they leave the NRL, to Union or an overseas club, then they or their future club has to pay a severance or transfer fee, ideally a proportion of what the player was worth in his last contract.

And youngsters will gladly sign this contract - what 17-year-old is going to turn down an NRL contract because he might not be able to play French Union when he turns 30?

This has a serious advantage: it ups the market price of players a lot, which either means it pumps more money back into the NRL OR it prevents players from leaving/switching codes.

The only downside I see is that union/ESL might start poaching our youngsters instead. They might even retaliate with a similar system - but that wouldn't hurt the NRL much.

NB: I don't think Thurston would play in the Northern Hemisphere, ESL OR Union. His roots are in North Queensland, he's used to hot climates. And he constantly needs a challenging.

The only challenging thing about Union is keeping spectators' attention.

If he wants to go,let him go.
The type of player Thurston is he'd be bored sh*tless with the amount of challenge and opportunity there.
No Origin,no Aussie jumper to retain and fight for.

And I really think once they go they can f**k off for good,so that eventually when this sport is starting to be treated with it's worth, they can watch from their boring dreary sidelines.

interesting post.

as a cowboys fan thought youd be devasted to lose your star player

true though when we get a much better tv deal next time and nrl players are getting over 1 million, let them stay in union
