Friday night game are selected on the basis of which games C9 believes will rate the highest. We are percieved to have a small supporter base and so don't feature in their thinking.

The live QLD game means that the Broncs are always going to have plenty of Friday Night Football. Just another one of the advantages that they have enjoyed for 20 years.

For us, we are competing with teams like St Geo, Easts and Canterbury who are percieved to be better supported than us. The fact that we aren't one of the in C9 teams (like Newcastle) doesn't help either. Add in the Gould hate and it is little wonder that we don't feature. Only way to turn that perception around is to win and become a dominant team.

Big Mick:

I'll give you a hint.

Last week for example you had 80% completion, scored 24...while the other team had 50% completion and scored 22.

Sharks are a great team as a unit, but boring as batsh!t...and not suited to primetime TV because you arn't flashy...

While I like that style...and like to watch it...its not a style that generates ratings.
Bloody boffins in TV.

Equal leaders.
Aiming for maiden premiership.
Channel 9 should create a marketing campaing just for the Sharks and have us on every week.

Bloody Dogs, Cows and Bunnys are always on.
Bottom 3 teams in the comp.
EVERYONE hates the 3 of 'em.
And they have lost 27 games between the 3 of them.

No wonder ratings are bloody down!!

Agree that Ch9 favours the teams who are perceived to represent the largest audiences, namely Sounths, Parra, St George and Bullies. Also agree with Weapon head's point that if we win regularly and become dominant that will force Ch 9 to do our games. Case in point in 2003, we got lots of Sunday games on the expectation that we'd be travelling well after a relatively successful season in 2002.

They dont take into account that league fans in general will watch games they percieve to be interesting/exciting no matter which team is playing.

I dont think the commentators would have much say in selecting games, I reckon that would be the marketing people who are devising the strategies for winning the ratings. The commentators are just there to put on their show.

Correct me if i'm wrong here.
I was told a while ago that whenever a team plays a home game on a friday night that they receive a certain sum of money( i can't exactly remember the figure), either from the NRL or 9.
Does anyone know if this is true?
If so, it would lend a hand to the theory that 9 does play favourites.

i think if that was true clubs would be spewing about not getting more games
some years certin clubs may only play one or two channel nine games and others play like 15-20

I think you'll find that some clubs are spewing that they don't receive many friday night games.
i was told this from someone within our club, not someone off the street.

Of course they would be.

More FTA games, particularly friday night games = more exposure for their sponsors which means the sponsorship deals are consequently higher.

yeah they spew about that but i dont think because of money. otherwise the poorer clubs will be thinking they are getting ripped off by clubs like parra who have channel nine games nearly every week
but i suppose they do try and advertise for there sponsers so as much air time the better i guess

Exactly right Inf, but i was led to believe that extra money was also given by 9, or the NRL, to "compensate the loss of crowd revenue".
Interesting if true.

id be upset if thats true
we never get channel nine games

it was only friday night home games as well, something we barely have. Maybe Broncos last year was the last?
In any case, i haven't seen contracts or discussed it with someone from the top of the food chain, so i too hope its wrong.
