My take on this is that Friz is happy to stay for 2020. The scenario for ongoing at the Dragons, imo, will depend on (a) how the team performs in 2020, particularly early, and (b) who will he head coach moving forward.
Putting feelers out now shows also he may require a significant salary increase increase and that may also form part of finding out his market value

Regardless of the many excuses being trotted out re Frizells future , the one thing that needs to improve is his CLUB FORM which was dreadfull for most of last season.
Been a fan of his for many seasons but last year , was nowhere near his best..as were some others

Yes and No to your thoughts possum.

Yes that he is definitely slowing down and would be absolutely tremendous value in passing on his many years of international and club experience to the up and comers in reserves.

On the other hand a definite No to such a move . James Graham has been the inspiration to our forward pack since joining the Dragons and until another forward steps up to the mark and takes the bit between his teeth by giving the same no- nonsense displays that Graham does , then he James will need to remain exactly where he is .

I believe Tyson is a very good player but not an elite player.

He has scored an average 3 trys a season for the dragons and the past two seasons it has been lower.

he can really bend the line and is a good defender, however I am not ‘wrapped in him’. If he he wants anything more than $600k a season then probably at his age now is he worth it?

Totally agree re our rudderless leadership , but Frizz is one of our elite players and leaders , whom our youngsters look up to and want to follow...2019 will go down as not one of his best at Club level .....

Hometown hero Tyson Frizell admits there could be tears as he prepares for his first Test at WIN Stadium while NRL officials hope they won't be the ones crying if faced with another empty stadium for an Australian game.

After just 12,528 and 15,684 fans attended the inaugural World Cup 9s - players were told on the eve of the tournament ticket sales were so sluggish just 6000 had been sold - the NRL know there will be more of an appetite when the Kangaroos take on New Zealand for the first time in Wollongong.

A crowd of about 16,000 is anticipated, which will eclipse the best attendance St George Illawarra enjoyed at the venue this season when 14,586 turned up for the derby against Cronulla.

Frizell rarely shows emotion but said the Kiwis clash would be extra special because he grew up in the area.

One person who will not be there for the memorable moment is his mother, Sophia, who jetted to Japan over the weekend to join her other son Shannon who looks set to be called into the All Blacks side for the Rugby World Cup semi-final against England.

As soon as Frizell found out earlier this year a Test would be played in Wollongong, he was desperate to be a part of it.

"Being a local boy, I know this opportunity to wear the green and gold on home soil might not happen again,'' Frizell said.

"This will be really significant to me. It's something I never thought would happen.

"I don't know if there will be [tears]. I don't want to say. It will be extra special.

"I'm sure there will be a massive crowd. It was almost a sellout when Australia played Samoa there a couple of years ago.''


A big taking point heading into the Dragons' new season will be whether Frizell hangs around beyond 2020 with the tough forward fair game for rival clubs come November 1.

While he has reiterated he will wear the Red V next year, plenty of rival clubs are keen to lure him away from the joint venture. He plans to give his future proper thought once the Kiwis match and Saturday week's Test against Tonga are completed.

Frizell might have no love for the Kiwis, but he will make an exception the following day when his brother looks set to be called up for the injured Matt Todd to take on Eddie Jones' England.

Frizell is a class player and seems to really blossom under at rep level where the coach is top grade. I hope Flanagan can provide that missing mission that Frizell thrives under. He is not a battering ram, Frizell is a good edge forward who needs players around him to be instructed to use him that way.

I'd like to see ball playing forwards like Leilua and our halfback create opportunities for Frizell to run through holes out on the right edge. Let our front row and lock handle the middle.

Fox Sports has learned South Sydney has identified Frizell as the type of seasoned representative forward who could be a perfect fit for the expected-to-be outgoing 2014 Clive Churchill Medal winner.



The Burgess retirement issue is tipped to soon be resolved with a Rabbitohs board meeting this week expected to be informed the champion forward needs to be medically retired.

Frizell is currently contracted with the Dragons until the end of 2020 with the Red V expected to block any attempt to try and grant the Kangaroos back-rower an early release.

South Sydney have been preparing a case for why Burgess should be allowed to be medically retired after sustaining a new shoulder injury in a round five match against the Warriors earlier this season.

The most pressing question for the NRL to determine is how much — if any — of Burgess’s $1 million plus contract should be included in South Sydney’s salary cap for the next three years.



South Sydney are not the only club to be linked with Frizell with the Parramatta Eels also closely monitoring his contract negotiations with the Dragons.

Frizell, 28, has played 157 NRL appearances for the Dragons and Cronulla since making his debut in 2011. He is currently contracted with the Red V until the end of next year.

On the representative football front, Frizell has excelled at State of Origin and Test match level.

But as much as he has won State of Origin series with the Blues and a World Cup with the Kangaroos, NRL finals appearances have been few and far between.

Of the three finals campaigns the Dragons forward has featured in 2012 (Sharks), 2015 (Dragons) and 2018 (Dragons), Frizell has never made it past week one in September.

I fear the writing is on the wall- I'd love Frizz to stay but why should he? Choosing between Bennett and Mary and a can do club like Souths and the reactionaries who run SGI is a no brainer
