racism and sledging are two different things

Well, who draws the line. In India you are more likely to offend someone by calling them a bastard than calling them a black ***

The ICC when they released their code of conduct with rasicm as the worst offence. Now of course when it's a 'whitey' doing the reporting they want to backtrack from that as quickly as possible...

Why is everybody so against banning sledging?
I don't think everybody is. It's just the sooks that are sick of Australia winning and associate sledging with Australia.

Racism should always be condemned.

Harbahjan should have been banned.

The indian monkley chants when Australia toured were appalling and should have been stamped out by the indian authorities straight away once they knew it was offensive, but GP's post is well thought out and adds perspective on a culture that is vastly different to our own, and one we dont know much about

So, you are honestly saying that Singh did not know that calling a "black" man a monkey would be taken in a way that is deemed racist?

To me, that is utter bullsh*t, he done it in India and got into strife for it. He knew exactly what he was to say was racist, and he got called up on it.

I've lost a huge amount of respect for the Indian team over the duration of this tour.

I knew the BCCI were a bunch of selfish c*ckheads who were happy to suck the life out of world cricket as long as the end result was good for India and involved plenty of $$$. I tempered this by acknowledging that Australia can be ruthless on the field, and all the BCCI were doing was to benefit Indian cricket. Basically they were acting in an Australian way, but off the field - so without the enjoyment of seeing quality cricket taking place.

But the way everything has been handled this summer....Sachin's lost so much reputation it sickens me. Ganguly, Singh...they already had bad boys rep's from previous tours. But Sachin's spineless actions in the middle and his cover-up's and conflicting hazy statements during the two trials....really surprised and disappointed me. Kumble has somehow managed to still come out of all this with his respect intact. I personally find that amazing, and an absolute testament to his character - and I don't think any of this would've gone as far as it has if Kumble had been out in the middle instead of Sachin at the SCG.

But the bottom line is cricket has been embarrassed. This summer has been tarnished, the sport has had its pants pulled around the ankles and has been bent over a table. Many fans have been lost, some probably forever. The Aussie team is far from blameless, but I personally couldn't believe some of the roasting that they received after the SCG Test - some justified, but for the most part I thought a lot of it was way out of line.

Hopefully we can pick up the pieces and the ICC can somehow rebuild a reputation that is in absolute tatters. Does John O'Neill like cricket? Get him involved somehow. He'll kick some heads and sort it out. The man's a magician. That's basically what is needed by now.

No, Singh was wrong and should have been banned.

What I am trying to do here is show the cultural differences have a role in this sorry saga.

But the cultural gap was closed when he learnt in India that calling Symonds a monkey is not on. Yes, I agree there are huge cultural differences. But in that on-field situation, with the knowledge Singh had that it was not on. The cultural gap excuse cannot be used.

That is so wrong.

BCCI does not care about Indian Cricket. All it cares is about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
As long as it makes money, BCCI will make India play 10 one dayers in north pole against Holland.

Mate it takes much more than a couple of incidents to close a cultural gap. You need to educate more than 1Billion people here.

But the make the big bucks, they need indian cricket to be strong. It's all linked together.

Pulling the current Indian tour would not have been a financial bonanza for them. So why did they threaten it? Because they were out to protect the Indian cricket team.

i'm sure Ravi Shastri was telling us the other day that India leads the way in the fight against racism

we know this is bs after the India tour and the fact India had no senior member for anti-racism as reported here

now gp tells us most Indians think you can't be racist to whites and it seems that for some geniused reason the Indians think Symonds is white
