It is the software used for nearly every single corporate intranet and web/webform app out there. Part of nearly every corporate standard build as well as still having a massive share of all other browser users out there. From an historical perspective it's importance and dominance is even more pronounced.
I don't where you got/get your information from. Many corporate business, including State and Federal Government Departments have adapted to Chrome and have had their home pages/intranet modified to be compatible with Chrome.

It's definitely decreasing, but still very dominant in that space. There are a lot of ties to older versions of IE, older versions of office and even XP still around as well.

It has been so important historically that the internet would be a vastly different beast without it. Below is a graph of IE usage by %. I'd say second only to apache in importance is this regard.
