It also cleaned up on illegal downloads:

FURIOUS 7, the latest instalment in the action franchise that broke box-office records this weekend, is also blazing-hot property among internet pirates.
Since opening last Thursday, Furious 7 has been downloaded worldwide 2.59 million times on torrent networks through to Monday, according to piracy-tracking firm Excipio.
That’s even though the copies of Universal’s film currently circulating on pirate sites are illegal in-theatre camcorder copies, not higher-quality digital rips.

yep. some people go to the cinema at a certain time when hardly anyone/noone else is in there, and they set up the video camera with a tripod. sometimes the video/audio quality is ok
My gosh their quality is hideous... it almost feels like a mission to watch... you couldn't pay me to watch one of them, let alone download. Horrible quality. I loved watching this in Vmax at the movies, and when it comes out in Blu-Ray... I'll purchase it then too!

Not exactly blockbuster competition it's up against...

Yeah that's right. To be honest if they released this later on in the year when a few bigger name movies are released, it would've been interesting to see how it went then. I still think it would've taken the box office.

so much bullshit in this movie that is impossible to comprehend.

the ending and tribute to paul walker made up for the dogshit first 120 minutes. and plus points for the writers not going down the usual route and making kurt russells character portray the main characters.

apart from that it was more of a comedy than anything else.

This movie was f**king ridiculous. Completely stupid and full of nonsense.
And yet I was completely entertained by it.

The story is garbage. The acting is weak (except Johnson - he rocks). The movie goes for about half an hour too long.
But the stunts were fun and so over the top that I couldn't help but enjoy it. I can't think of many other movies (let alone franchises) that can keep me watching just on the action set-pieces alone. But for some reason I keep coming back to this one (only since Fast 5 though - the ones before weren't very good).

I think they've just reached the point where they know what they are doing is f**king geniused, but they just ramp it up and have fun with it. They don't seem to take it too seriously (most of the time).

Oh, I do have one message to all those Hollywood producers:
Stop putting Rhonda Rousey in your movies. She is quite possible the worst actress I've ever seen. She had this look on her face through her entire scene like she just smelled a massive fart....and then she delivered her ONE line so badly it made Gina Carano jump up and say "Well at least I'm not THAT bad."

Tyrease was so unfunny in this movie.
Nobody in the cinema I was in was laughing at him. Was quite painful.

I f**king hope he doesn't get the Green Lantern job, which has been rumoured.
He's an awful actor.

The entire theater I was in burst out laughing... especially in the car parachuting scene.

No, it would've been crushed had it been released at same time as Avengers or Star Wars. They knew this, hence why they released it with absolutely no competition whatsoever.

Bit easy for the "entire" cinema to be laughing when you're the only person in there because no-one can stand to be withing 500 meters of you

Absolutely.
The only reason I went to see it is because I just really wanted to go see a movie and nothing else was on.
If it was released later in the year against the big movies, it still would have made plenty of money, but nowhere near as much as it has by opening in April.

Perhaps now after this and last year with Captain America 2 (also American Sniper in December), the studios will realise that people will got to the cinema to watch movies no matter what time of the year it is and start staggering their big releases a bit more so we don't have months of nothing while everything is crammed into 3 months in the middle of the year.

I think they are going to continue the franchise, moving to the streets of NYC.

IMO, Chris Hemsworth could take up where Walker left off and pull it off quite easily (different character)...especially when you consider his wife has been in the last three movies.

Hemsworth is too good for those movies.
Plus his schedule is probably pretty full over the next couple of years.

Too good? Based on what? Thor, The Avengers or Red Dawn? I'd say it's right up his alley.

Aren't we comparing 3 very different target markets of movies here?
  1. Furious 7 - action
  2. Avengers - children, teens, young adults
  3. Star Wars - nerds

*Waits for abusive reply*

Not really mate. I saw it on night 3 at 9:30 - cinema was packed and fully booked. Pre-bookings were essential.

Children, Teens & Young Adults are the target market for every blockbuster that doesn't go above a mature/restricted rating.

Also "action" isn't a market, Avengers is also directed towards nerds (as well as everyone else in the world), Star Wars is directed towards everyone in the world (as well as nerds) and Furious is directed towards car-nerds.

Let's just put it this way... in 2 weeks, this movie has already brought in over $800,000,000 and it will break the billion dollar barrier. If Star Wars or Avengers beat this take in I will ban myself from this forum!

lol quoted!

Anyway I think Paul Walker's passing is a big reason this is such a success, I never rated him as an actor but respect for doing so well on this no doubt.

Let's put it in perspective. If Paul walker doesn't die, that movie doesn't come anywhere near 800m, let alone 1 billion.

Both Star Wars and Avengers WILL break that barrier. No question about it. One is the sequel to a movie that made 1.5 billion, the other is the first instalment in one of the greatest franchises ever in over 30 years. There is nothing surer, and they won't need an integral cast member to die to do so

It's been nice having you around, but will be so much nicer when you leave
