See above. And nowhere near the backlash for AFL unlike what rugby league gets.

1000 submissions written to the committee into the stadium. Strong majority against. Multi party group has stated clearly they are against it. There is no momentum for support other than by the government and some local businesses.
Latest is that QSAC will be revived. They would demolish the ends and bring them in closer, with a downsized capacity of around 25k - 30k. The main stands would get a makeover. If the QRL is smart they will get onboard with this to ensure last year’s proposal for a Centre of Excellence gets built at the same time, and take it over after 3/4 years of cricket/AFL. It would also give the Broncos somewhere to play if/when Suncorp is redeveloped. Page 75Any word on where the Lions will play whilst the Gabba is being rebuilt? That's going to be a several year build and there isn't any oval of AFL standard in SEQ besides Carrara.
I assume they relocate to the Goldie like they were originally for a season or two?

Ekka site is too small. The Roosters are a partner in that old showground redevelopment. Assume their women’s team will play there?Wasn't there also word that the Ekka might get an upgrade for cricket and AFL?
Also, The NSW Government is funding an upgrade of the old Sydney Showground to become an AFLW venue:

The legal capacity of the Showground is still in the ~25,000 range, isn't it? It could be a decent shout if it recieves an upgrade.
To be fair though I think the most likely outcome for cricket and AFL is that they use Springfield, Allan Border Field and Carrara as stopgaps. Springfield gets a further upgrade to take it to the 12-15k seats (with some of them temporary). The Lions play the bulk of their games there, with games expected to draw more fans and any finals played at Cararra. Test cricket goes to Allan Border Field (with lower drawing sides like the Windies or Sri Lanka scheduled for Brisbane) plus a few Heat games per season, with the rest of the Heat games going to Cararra with any ODIs or T20Is allocated for Queensland.
The Ekka though is quite rundown and old. I mean the QLD Govt is dropping $2B on the Gabba, can they afford another $50 to 100M on the Showgrounds also?
What is the Springfield transport links like? It looks like a pretty minor facility.
Cricket can play anywhere really, Townsville, Cairns, Allan Border, as the crowds thing isn't a bit issue.
The last nine days of cricket at the Gabba this summer averaged over 20k. They won’t be playing those games Allan Border or in NQ. Between Lions and Cricket there will be around 90 event days where at least 20k capacity is needed over the four years Gabba is not available. RL needs to get on board with this massive Olympic spend. Don’t argue that is not required, just make sure you get a piece of the action. Swim with the tide, not against it. Piggyback like the AFL did with Homebush. The Ekka though is quite rundown and old. I mean the QLD Govt is dropping $2B on the Gabba, can they afford another $50 to 100M on the Showgrounds also?

Cricket won’t be at Springfield as the Lions train and play AFLW there over summer. It is their ground after all. It holds 8k. There won’t be AFL games there either as the Govt will upgrade one venue not two whilst the Gabba is unavailable.I think their issue will be with the QCA who control memberships at the Gabba and who will be effected if the games are played away from either the Gabba or Allan Border. But you can't play an Ashes or India test at a ground that holds 5,000 people.
I've just looked up the Springfield Stadium site - it's built right next to a train station so transport links aren't really an issue. I did read an article on it which said it was designed to incorporate extra seats through temporary stands.

That all makes sense. You can't play international cricket at Cairns, Townsville or Mackay in our summer because of the afternoon storms. You lose too much play.
I think this is a bit of an Occams Razor situation where the simplest solution is the correct one: major cricket and AFL matches will go to Cararra while the Gabba is out of comission, minor AFL to Springfield and minor cricket to Allan Border Field.
As for RL getting in on the Olympics spend, I think the fact we're going to end up with a stadium suitable for an NRL club full-time on the Sunshine Coast is a decent start. I'd also be pushing hard to have Dolphin Stadium used as a soccer or Rugby 7s venue for the games, to get it a decent upgrade to 20,000 or so.
So we see the Showground made into a AFL pitchWasn't there also word that the Ekka might get an upgrade for cricket and AFL?

Good stuffNot for playing games I believe. The Roosters NRLW side are having its own Centre of Excellence there -

Sydney Roosters Captain Isabelle Kelly has lauded today's announcement of a new, dedicated women's Centre of Excellence as 'incredibly significant' to the future of the women's game.www.roosters.com.au
It's more for training purposes (as far as the article makes out), as the Swans AFLW side will be using it to, as the article explains, and this is what the ground is supposed to look like (image taken from the above article) -

Getting an upgrade to Dolphin Stadium as a 7's and soccer venue is the play here for RL. The Government loves legacy projects and this gives an upgrade to QLD's newest NRL team. You can't play international cricket at Cairns, Townsville or Mackay in our summer because of the afternoon storms.
