The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

The Gabba has been described as "ageing". The redevelopment stages of the current Gabba were from 1993-2005. Why don't they replace some of the grandstands that were built in the 90's?

Spending $1.6 billion on QE II is a waste. That money could be distributed towards the Gabba, Suncorp, Arena and other Olympic facilities. And the $3.4 billion stadium at Victoria Park is beyond ridiculous. The oval sports do not have much content in Brisbane.

Compare it to Penrith, it only has a few extra sporting events.
* Penrith- 11 Panthers games (one game to Bathurst)
* Gabba- 11 Lions games, one cricket test, ODI or T/20 and 5 BBL games.

Nothing is set until the LNP announce their preferred option as they’re likely to go against the Labor model. $1.6b for QSAC is excessive but regardless of the outcome, Suncorp needs at power 1/2 of that $1b to get its upgrade

Me too. I'd have thought that they can skip that and put all the money into Suncorp, The Gabba, and the Arena, and just have the athletics at the Gabba.
They’d have to spend a fair bit to reconfigure the Gabba for athletics then change it back to AFL/Cricket mode. It’s not long enough for an athletics track and too wide. The Gabba pitch is around 170x150m and you need something like 180x95m for an athletics track.

The austerity games lol.
Be interesting to see how they turn this into an Olympic stadium with decent access and facilities. The big shame is the area around the Gabba linking it to South bank wont get done, that could have been a big plus for long term tourism. Good news for Suncorp though I feel the Qlnd govt has missed an opportunity to finally wrestle the Gf away from Sydney by not linking the funding to an agreement with NRL.

Yeah it's going to be rough as guts but better use of coin than QE2. Will be an interesting few months/years ahead.

I'm just so glad that Suncorp doesn't have the space to be ruined.

Does Suncorp have the room for the track anyway? Very tight which is why it is great for rectangle sports

Nah no chance. It's so tightly packed and they could only really build over Castlemaine Street to the west. The South has a heritage listed church so there is nowhere to go really, so the stadium being rectangular is safe IMO

It should be the austerity games, we are in the midst of the worst COL crisis in our lifetime's.

It was also one of the reasons why they got the Olympics in the first case.

In all seriousness though, Brisbane hosting the Olympics cheapens the prestige of the games.
