The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It is not even just that. We could have had a world class rectangular stadium as a legacy from the Sydney Olympics and the fumblers completely screwed that.
They're trying to do the same again. If the $3.4 billion stadium goes ahead, there will be no more stadium funds for 30 years in Brisbane. By 2040 the Broncos will have to decide to play out of a dilapidated Suncorp or move to this oval ground. Might even be forced to go.

But seriously how does the Victoria Park stadium cost $3.4 Billion? What kind of Gold plating were they planning on. Allianz copped alot for its gold plating but it cost $0.82 billion and isn't far away from the same capacity. Surely they could get 50k capacity for 1.2 Bill and spend 1.4 Billion on Suncorp for 70k-75k.

It almost feels like they were trying to suck up as much money as possible, so no other sport benefited.

Exactly they ruined Sydney and now they are trying to ruin Brisbane.

It’s a shame that it is the Olympics and this is Australia. I’m sure Japan, France, Brazil and USA don’t have to worry about one sport white anting facilities. A soccer World Cup would be immeasurably better for this country in terms of facilities as a comparison.

Its short sighted knee jerk for votes by a qlnd govt under pressure.
Suncorp will need much more than that to get it to 70k+ and fit for the next 40-50 years.
Gabba needs the $500mill plus another $1bill in ten years according to the report just to keep it going. And it will still be behind Melbourne and Perth.
And they are spending $1.6bill on a 14k athletics stadium that will be pretty sht for the Olympics.

Taking the RL rose tinted glasses off its a pretty poor outcome for $3billion stadium spend all round and for the Olympics which was the point of it all.

$500m for Suncorp is far better than $0, what can be done with that remains to be seen, probably not 70k but should be able to get something decent. Allianz was $800m for a complete knockdown & rebuild a few years ago.

Suncorp will have a pretty full schedule with Football, 7’s and the ceremonies, may even get some other events. It will look great as the face stadium of the Olympics.

Again these prices are “according to the report”. I’d like to see how they think it will cost $1b to keep it running. To be honest since the Gabba is only hosting the cricket now it’s probably lucky to get the same $ as Suncorp which will be used as the torch location & face of the games.

Brisbane’s Oval ground will always be behind Melbourne & Perth because those cities have demand for larger grounds being AFL cities, Brisbane does not. A 55k Oval would fill once every few years on average for sport and it is nowhere near big enough to snag concerts from Accor or MCG which shits on the whole ‘Taylor Swift’ argument people seem to be using.

QSAC is contentious but again that $1.6b is just based off the report at this stage. It also won’t be shit for the Olympics, it’s permanent & temp stands won’t look like the ones from 1982.

I don’t think the plan is perfect but it’s miles better than a spending $3.4b on one grossly overpriced Oval then having nothing left for anywhere else for the next 20 years.

And how gullible are you for believing the gabba needs all this money or it will collapse tomorrow.

Obviously this report was biased and the guy behind it wanted the outcome to be a grand new stadium, something that would be forever linked to him.

Luckily the premier saw through the BS and we aren't giving the afl a massive free kick, probably why you are so upset.

Lets just look at the facts, the oldest stands at the gabba and suncorp were both built in the early 90's. Then suncorp had the rest built and finished in 2002, while the gabba had the same done in 2005. In 2020 it also had 30 million spent upgrading corporate, media entrance and spectator facilities.

Now they say the gabba is outdated, in need of serious repair and not built to modern building code? Get f**ked, if that were the case than suncorp would be worse and should be first cab off the rank.

The big push for a new stadium is coming from people who want the benefits of lavish, gold plated corporate facilities (afl and cricket) so they can wine and dine their sponsors and make money off the back of qld taxpayers.

And it is so obvious the angle they are pushing, meanwhile the main stadium in brisbane was going to recieve nothing. A stadium that will go close to have 1 million people attending just rugby league games this year, plus union, soccer and concerts.

The only people not happy with this are flogball fans, real rugby league supporters are happy and it is a no brainer to put money into suncorp.

What I reckon we’ll see now is cricket and the fumbletards go off the shelf with pressure to get the stadium they want in QLD. It’s clear they are a cabal now and are as thick as thieves. We’d do well to remind the Labor and liberal party of the power of our game and align ourselves with football and union to get what we want and deserve.
If Cricket Australia threaten to not play Tests at the Gabba then I won't care. Queensland's hot humid wet summer climate is terrible for cricket. Games are often threatened by rain and marred by stifling humidity. Winter is the only decent time to play sport in Brisbane.

I give him the benefit of the doubt and he has reason to be salty at the governing body for stringing perth along since 2008.

But now it is tiresome and I can't stand the negativity whenever the game has good things happen to it.

All this from a man who has been crowing about the world class optus stadium for 6 years and how rugby league should emulate it and play in big stadiums to big crowds (i agree for most games) or it will fall massively behind afl because they don't know how to lobby governments.

Now an upgrade to make our best stadium better falls in our lap and it is only desperate vote grabbing? Get real!

Well said. Since the athletics aren’t going there anymore the Gabba is lucky to be getting anything let alone the same amount of money as Suncorp. Let’s just remember Suncorp was getting nothing in the Original plan or the reviewed plan despite hosting events.

Suncorp will be the face of the games, it will be used a lot more during the games than the Gabba now and it will remain the most used stadium by some margin post-olympics.

Miles didn’t actually say half-half from memory he just said it will be “split between the 2”. It would be great to see the meltdown from AFL fans & media if it’s announced that split is 800m/200m in favour of Suncorp.

QSAC will have 8k permanent seats in a new western stand and another 6k around the track. That would make it big enough to host an annual IAAF event.

One thing it could do to leave a legacy is build gold plated statues of the athletes who won the track and field events. That will make it a shrine for the public to visit years down the track and remember that the best athletes in the world competed at the site. The venue is still used by numerous athletes across numerous sports.

A ground for ‘Taylor Swift concerts’ is the next incarnation of ‘multi-use’ from Victorians.

Just wish they were honest and say ‘we want a big ozzie rules oval to show who’s boss’.
The Australian media loves to put untalented Yanks up on a pedestal. Taylor Swift is a horrible artist. She did us a favour by not playing her shit songs in Queensland.

Tay Tay has never played a concert on a rectangular field.

Not once on her world tour.

Was playing in pubs in countries without oval stadiums.

Perth Red does more to turn people against Perth than for it.
