Realistically, what will actually be the next stadium to receive an upgrade / rebuild? Besides Suncorp for the Olympics, obviously.

You would hope Canberra, but knowing Barr he will stall until Canberra gets an AFL team and try to build a multipurpose stadium. The Raiders, NRL, FFA, Brumbies need to come out strongly against this and say they will refuse to play at the ground. It will set all their clubs back 30 years. Last thing we need is another Accor Stadium hanging around for 30 years.

Warriors are also looking at something in the next 5 years.

With current upgrades planned we will have 8.5/17 current teams playing out of good to great club stadiums by ~2030. Could be 10 if Souths ->Allianz and Dolphins-> Full Suncorp.

For the $3.4B they were gonna spend on one AFL stadium/part time cricket stadium in Brisbane, you could do:
* $1.8B Accor Rectangular 75k-80k + Club mode 40k - (Wests Tigers + Bulldogs - connected to most areas with Metro over the next 20-30 years)
* $600 Million - Te Kaha Replica in Canberra - 30k.
* $200 Million - Sharks Western Grandstand - Corporates + increase capacity to 25k
* $200 Million - Western or Eastern stand at Brookvale- Corporates + increase capacity to 25k
* $200 Million - WIN Stadium - Corporates + Increase Capacity to 25k.
* $200 Million - Upgrade to Newcastle - North and South Stands.
* $200 Million - Western Stand Perth - Corporates + Increase Capacity to 25k.

With that you'd have 19/20 theoretical teams in 2035 playing out of good facilties; if the expansion teams are Perth, NZ2 and PNG. PNG being the 20th team with the poor stadium, but you would imagine they would get some Federal funding to improve it, even just for safety. Obviously most likely not going to happen, but a nice extra highlight of how insane the Brisbane Stadium costs were.

Hbf hopefully for the new perth nrl club! We can but dream lol

Penrith is committed.
Christchurch is under construction if nrl brings in a club there
Auckland is being talked about
canberra keeps going round in circles
accor roof mooted

seems about it

with current economy, housing, cost of living etc it’s hard to see any govt splashing hundreds of millions on upgrades under the public pressure.

Warriors need to push for an affordable capacity upgrade to Mt Smart even if it’s just more tenporary seating on the northern embankment. Realistically it’ll be the best part of a decade before a new downtown stadium is built so there’s plenty of justification for it.
A permanent south stand would also increase Mt Smart’s capacity as a concert venue too as the stage is always positioned at the northern end.

What’s happened to the configuration of Mt smart stadium from 1995 which saw nearly 30k against the broncos up until today ?

Its very different to then now. It was originally an athletics venue most recently used in the 1990 commonwealth games when it had a capacity of around 40k with temporary stands.
When the Warriors took over the eastern stand was a temporary structure and placed further back on top of the old athletics track, and there was still a section of track between the western stand and the sideline, and at the northern end. They used to sell GA tickets to the northern embankment which added a few thousand, which I think would be an OHS issue these days due to its steepness.
when the permanent Eastern stand was built in 2003 the stadium was properly converted from an athletics track to a rectangle and the pitch was moved west a few metres so both main stands were closer to the sidelines, this improved atmosphere and sightlines but also made the entire arena smaller. You can still see that the curve of the northern embankment is off centre towards the east because of the pitch having moved westward.

That northern end looks a waste. Surely a scaffold type temporary stand is being looked.

The club uses the bit immediately behind the goal line as the fanzone area which is very popular, and that’s also where concert stages are put so nothing permanent will get built there. But they could erect temporary or even permanent stands on the embankment behind it, which had been done in the past. The embankment means the foundations are already half there.

Tbf this is the first year warriors have had to worry about capacity. I’m sure if it continues they’ll look to how they can utilise the ends better.

I could imagine the fanzone being great success. It must be a great atmosphere there.

Put the fan zone behind a new temp stand at the top of the hill

Yea that would be a great set up, best of both worlds.

I was at the All Black game at Mt Smart last year when they had the temp seating on the north end, but in and around the big screen where the fanzone normally is.

Capacity was around 31kish and with a full house the atmosphere was really good. Far far better than a full Eden Park.

Yeh I get that, but doesn’t answer the question of where the $1billion is coming from to build it? Does the nz govt have appetite for such a Spend?
Well, the current Government has just announced that they want to look at at a 4-lane (two each way) road tunnel under Wellington from the city fringe to near the airport, crossing active fault lines, below the water table & under sea level, so uhh.. MAYBE?

National like spending money on roads but not much else, it seems.

Follow the money - they're in the pocket of the trucking lobby, road-building contractors, big oil, and the real estate industry... and that's not mentioning the "blue dragon" Chinese connection that are always interested in investment opportunities.
