What is being lost is that the Nrl seems to be front and center of the reason there is $2.5mil being spent on stadiums. That’s not the case. The Nrl wanted parra ($350) and a new Anz ($1.1 bil). By my calculations that’s $1.45bil. Well within the original amount and leaves the $150 mil for other stadiums. Having Allianz built is a handy benefit for some nrl games but was mainly done to appease the scg trust. An article in the dt or smh should be written to clarify the Nrls position.

Sea Eagles hire expert in a bid to secure a revamp of Brookvale Oval

Dean Ritchie Exclusive, The Daily Telegraph
November 28, 2017 6:08pm

MANLY have engaged the Melbourne stadiums expert who helped the Geelong Cats secure a $210 million redevelopment of Kardinia Park to help save dilapidated Brookvale Oval.

Leading sports facility consultant Chris Dare is urgently looking for ways to revamp Brookie in what could be the Sea Eagles’ final chance to secure the future of their spiritual home, or face having to shift more games away from the Northern Beaches.

“There is a future at Brookvale, no doubt about it. But the pressure is on,” Dare said.

Dare, managing director of stadiums advisory firm Waypoint, has been heavily involved in the reconstruction of Kardinia Park — now known as GMHBA Stadium — a state-of-the-art 40,000-seat facility for Geelong AFL fans. A further $100m is set to be injected into the stadium to complete the project.

Brookvale desperately requires work, and between $50-$80 million if it is to be turned into a 23,000 seat stadium.

Manly have been promised $22.5 million from previous state and federal government grants for upgrades and, along with Waypoint, have held talks with Northern Beaches Council to somehow find a financial solution.

Manly have engaged a stadiums expert to help secure a revamp of Brookvale Oval.

The NSW Government announced last week it would spend $2.3 billion on rebuilding ANZ, Allianz and Parramatta Stadiums, but offer no money to crumbling suburbans grounds.

Dare refuses to concede Brookvale will be lost to Sea Eagles fans who have attended the ground for 70 years.

“One of our key projects has been the GMHBA Stadium down there at Geelong — it’s gone from a little ground in a regional centre to a very significant venue which has driven a lot of community change,” Dare said.

“Believe me, Geelong was in a poor state when we first started — the AFL was going to pull games from them and take them to Melbourne. There is a lot of parallels with the work we have done there and the situation at Brookvale.

“The challenge is about developing partnerships. I don’t yet accept there is no government funding for Brookie. We as an organisation specialise in getting the government to invest in sporting infrastructure.

“We will look at things we have done elsewhere that we might be able to bring to Brookvale to excite the government.”

Dore suggested relocating Manly’s training base from Narrabeen and developing community centres to make Brookvale a centrepiece of the area.

One of six redevelopment plans for proposed for Brookvale Oval.

“Interacting with our fans on a daily basis rather than just at matches,” he said.

“It’s got the attributes to be something special.”

Manly will run an open forum tonight where fans, members and sponsors can question the club on numerous issues, including Brookvale Oval’s future.

The club has unsuccessfully lobbied to upgrade the ground for 22 years. New chief executive Lyall Gorman has immediately started implementing his plans for future redevelopment.

“We are in very active discussions through local government,” Gorman said.

“We have also engaged Waypoint. Chris will work with all stakeholders to develop a masterplan for Brookvale.”

Dare added: “There is hope for Brookvale.

“We are only two weeks into the project so I am still getting my head around the enormous background of Brookie and all the reports.

“Having spoken to people from Council and from within the club over the last few weeks, and people who have been historically involved, there is a future for the ground.

“It’s about finding a solution that fits in with the community’s desire to see the venue continue to be used. A way that supports the club on and off the field in a sustainable way through partnerships with other groups. That’s the challenge at hand.”

Dare wouldn’t place a time frame on any possible revamp but hoped it would be “quickly”.

“But I am realistic, these things do take a bit of time,” he said.

The company has also worked with the NRL, NSWRL, Cronulla, Wests Tigers, Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.

NSW Gov has been pretty clear that they arent interested in funding Brooky. This reads like a desparate last ditch attempt by a club that is still in denial...

Obviously they shouldnt be taking games south of the Harbour, but locking themselves into brooky takes away any leverage for upgrades. Would it be so tragic taking games up to the Central Coast or looking for a stadium site in North Sydney/Ryde/Chatswood?

I don’t see how any stadium site on the north shore gets significant funding. I hope I’m wrong because I think it’s important rugby league maintains a presence there, just don’t see it happening.

Which then begs the question: what do Manly do when their already dilapidated stadium falls further and further behind NRL standards?

They should absolutely keep Brooky as a training ground (like Souths in Redfern and Dogs in Belmore) with the occasional game going back, but Manly really need to start looking to the future and accepting that Brooky isnt in line for the upgrade it needs...

They’re in a really tough spot.

I think any team who wants to use central coast really needs to move their full time, community will expect it.

But then travelling to Allianz also seems a difficult prospect without a train line.

Yikes I hope not! Far too shallow, I know going to 75k impacts height but the American nfl stadium seats seem to be ale to achieve it. Is this a total Rebuild or replacement of interior lik originally planned?

Well they announced it as a total rebuild. But who the hell knows

I do wonder if Brisbane will ever have a stadium with a bigger capacity. Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne all have stadiums with a higher capacity and in most cases significantly.

Considering the sort of crowds Brisbane and international events draw at Suncorp they could use a bigger stadium some day (probably a long way off).

I never understood why Suncorp was only built with a capacity of 52,500. It gets regular sell-outs for state of origin, the NRL double header every year, the Broncos - Cowboys derby and would also fill up for some Wallabies and Socceroos internationals. Plus the Brisbane ANZ Stadium (QE2) that the Broncos played at before Suncorp was re-built had a capacity of 57,000. I though that when the Suncorp redevelopment was announced in the late 90's that we would go at lease 65k.

At 65k I think you would still sell it out for State of Origin, big Socceroos and Wallabies games, touring European football teams and the Broncos would be able to draw above 55k for big finals and the odd Cowboys derby.

From watching the video, few take aways

Interesting they used Souths colours at Allianz.

The plans for Allianz seem much more detailed than for ANZ

The club mode at Allianz looks excellent, really hope we see this at ANZ too.

Don’t know why but the rake of the stands at ANZ seemed a little better in the video. Doesn’t look bad, but could be better. But we’ll need to see the exact details.

Can live without a roof, but seems a missed opportunity to insure against bad weather for concerts.

Another thing about the ANZ render, I do like that the upper tier is big all around.

This makes a club mode much more viable, lower section should be 30-35k, perfect size for the clubs.

I think the only announced that they will go out to tender for the SFS and ANZ

No formal designs options yet

It will be interesting to see the impact of the new tram line at the SCG

Yep, they're mad if they aren't having a curtain at ANZ as well.

A mate of mine moved to Vancouver last year and has been to a few MLS games there and reckons it's ace with the curtain down, really keeps the noise in. And that's the budget version.

The other problem no-one's talking about here is the deals for clubs to play at these shiny new stadiums. IIUC, the days of clubs being paid to play at SA are over and the rental to pay for these expensive new toys might well be prohibitive ala the GC stadium.

Actually this is NOT what the SCG trust wanted. They wanted to leave Allianz as it is, then build a totally new stadium where Kippax Lake is and then ultimately turn Allianz into training facilities/second field. They were dead serious about this but the sticking point is Kippax Lake is not SCG Trust land it is Moore Park/ Centennial Park Trust land and they are dead against it. I worked on the proposal.

My personal opinion is that the final result is a very generous result. Major stadia through an even spread of the demographic, Syd>Homebush>Parra although Campbelltown/Penrith could stake better demographic claims for the west than Parra but it is what it is.

As a Tigers fan I was interested when the club made a press release about the upgrades to Allianz & ANZ and potential benefits to the Wests Tigers. I would be more interested in a co-tenancy at Parra.

That being the case I wonder if Souths would look at going back 'home' to the SFS eventually.
