I doubt the debate will sustain itself long enough to be an election issue. People don't hold their attention long enough & with Xmas coming up I doubt too many are even listening ATM.
There seems to be a lot of talk about getting Allianz done before the election + all the public pressure on spending "all the school and hospital money".
True, but no one in power has said anything.
Honestly they’re in a really tight spot now. If they lose a major event like the NRL GF they’ll be crucified. Not to mention the optics of favouring east Sydney.
Do you think the NRL will have the fortitude to actually take the GF away if they don't. That would have to be enough of a deterrent surely.
They will if they get enough money. If the rumours of the QLD govt offering $10m are correct that’s easily enough to make up for the shortfall from ticket sales.
My guess is the Victorian govt may offer even more.
I think at that point they really have no choice. It might snap a future govt into action, and they’ll no longer take the NRL lightly.
I posted it to r/nrl and it's getting mostly negative feedback so even league fans seem to be against it. Even one bloke poking fun because of the amount of people who signed.
The guy who started the pro stadium petition tweeted it to all the big names on NRL twitter, not one retweeted it from what I can tell.
Yeah that's how I saw it. You'd think they'd try and promote it. Especially Todd "we'll take the Gf" Greenberg.
NRL have 4 genuine options to take the grand final outside of Sydney
Perth - 60k
MCG 100k
Brisbane 52k
Auckland 50k
If you rotated it & opened up a bidding process I think you could make a killing. NSW govt would look like muppets losing this. I suspect labor will understand that too if they win the election.
NRL themselves can’t get involved in a petition, would look too amateurish.
But if some big names got behind it, Vossy, some big name players etc, it’d help.
Needs someone big to get behind the petition, and few have the courage to go against the “schools and hospitals” narrative.

Whereas at the moment it's a first world city with second class public servicesSydney needs to keep pace with its competitors or risk becoming a 1st world city with 3rd world stadiums

If this ever happened I think it would be hard for Sydney to convince them to go back to how things were. The NRL could make a killing by selling off the GF each year. Would also be a great way to showcase the game in different areas.
Would be a huge c**k up by the NSW government if that happened.
