The money?

Though the Canberra Raiders NRL club loses money the Raiders group (that owns the NRL club, Raiders leagues clubs, and real estate all over the place, etc) are absolutely loaded.

If they really wanted to invest into a reasonable new stadium (you know no Madison Square Garden or whatever, but still a really good little stadium none the less) they could afford it with a bit of juggling of their other investments and with the help of a good developer and maybe some other third party investors.

I know they’re a wealthy club, but we’re talking $200-300m minimum here.

I reckon $200m would be the low end of something decent that’s big enough. Say 25k seats. At that price though it’d be pretty bare bones.

What a clusterf**k this is.
I just hate the fact that a city like Canberra cannot have, or does not want an inner city stadium. It would bring the city to life and pump so much back into the local economy - so much more than the current situation does.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. f**k this country is backwards.
This David Barr dick needs to go.
I cannot believe he thinks it's a good investment to make a new stadium multi-purpose, thus ruining forever the game day experience for all rectangular sports, just so 3 ALF games and a few days of cricket a year can be played there. This is exactly the reason why ANZ Stadium is so f**ked now. The powers that be bent over backwards for two sports who don't give a shit about the place now.
What a shambles.

As I said with some juggling of investments they could come up with that kind of money, I mean hell GWS and a developer had $800 million ready to invest into upgrading Manuka, $800 million! The only reason that it didn't go ahead is cause of nimbys, and because of Barrs' master plan for the new stadium.

Now Manuka is a trendy place sure, but Braddon is better situated and similarly trendy, and the Raiders own that plot in Braddon, Manuka Oval is owned by the ACT gov.

If the AFL can solicit a deal like that for Manuka Oval, then surely the Raiders with the NRL's help can solicit a similar one for a new stadium with residential, car-parking, retail, and whatever else as well!

The only difference between the AFL and the NRL in this case is that the AFL has the balls to try something like that and the NRL doesn't.

We may be able to come up with it, but it’s one hell of a risk to take - it could very easily send us broke. Just ask the Bears.

Sure, but what options does the club have?

Either they take the risk with potential for big rewards or big failure, or they don't and the club is slowly strangled to death by having to play in an inadequate stadium that will basically kill the business anyway.

We aren't talking about Sydney here, in Sydney the f##k up that is ANZ didn't effect the clubs as badly cause there are other options, that isn't the case in Canberra, if a new 'multipurpose' stadium is built in Canberra that'll be it, the only stadium in town that can support major clubs of the size of the Raiders and Brumbies (when they aren't imploding like all of RU is in this country), cause at that point the ASC will sell Bruce to the ACT gov thinking it's a white elephant and the ACT government will knock it down and build units on it, then they'll have a monopoly.

At that point the Raiders and Brumbies are screwed, cause their rent is going to go up, the stadium is going to be inadequate and there won't be the expected bump in crowds to make up the difference and long term they'll shed attendance figures cause the experience at the ground is bad, and apart from some small parks there's no alternative in Canberra/Queanbeyan, so the stadium will slowly swallow their crowds like ANZ does without the benefit of being payed to play there like the clubs that play at ANZ get.

So again what options do they really have, I mean I guess we could relocate to the CC or wherever lol, actually threatening relocation if the stadium isn't rectangular might not be a be a bad idea, it'd at least draw some mainstream attention to the issue.

And maybe I'm asking to much, but surely, surely, the NRL can see the benefits of the major rectangular stadium in a city like Canberra being owned by a group affiliated to them and would be willing to help or at least give the club some leniency, then again I'm probably asking to much, the NRL is a f##king shambles after all.

The option is keep playing out of Bruce.

It’s dated, but it’s nowhere near the bottom of the league quality wise. And it’s much safer than trying to borrow a quarter of a billion dollars to build our own stadium.

Except that the ACT govs 'stadium strategy' is predicated on them being able to buy Bruce cheap and selling the land to help fund the new stadium, so no if the ACT gov get there way Bruce won't be an option...

Yes, but it’ll be one or the other.

The ACT Government aren’t going to let the only stadium in the territory be sold off and demolished without a replacement already built.

Yes but the replacement that they plan to build will be totally inadequate to both their main tenants needs...
Barr hopes he can build the new stadium then demolish Bruce to fund the new stadium and by demolishing Bruce force the Brumbies and Raiders to use the only suitable stadium in town- the new multipurpose stadium, thus forcing them to become it's main tenants, this way he justifies and gets the oval stadium he wants, the other politicians are satisfied that everybody is happy, he has done well by his AFL friends, and they all get a ribbon to cut...

It's pretty basic power politics...

I'm not sure what you are missing here, but you're not understanding something.

is that the only site considered?
Turner Parkland is currently being used by basically no one except theres a pokemon gym there.

probably way less impact on Canberra than building near parkes way.

alternately, with the light rail line "expending to woden" (we shall see)
could be a place down there for a stadium.

as to barr. he's a crook. and Manuka is PERFECT for the no fans giants and the cricket.

its a shame rugby is dead. but an indoor stadium may revive em a bit.

we aren't getting A league.

The issues with an indoor stadium would be that it would need to be a retractable roof or fully climate controlled, which adds to the cost substantially.

Even forgetting A-League for a moment, it can still be in the mid-30s at the beginning of the season for kickoff of matches. The Dunedin stadium which is often held up as the model has a fixed perspex roof - without some way to open it up or cool it down it'd be a greenhouse in there.

I'd be fine with a new-Parra clone that offers shelter from the wind off the mountains (currently the by-far worst issue in mid winter) and has 90% of the seats under cover in the rain (currently it's less that 25%).

For the Canberra civic stadium proposal a few things need to happen.

Union and league need to stick solid publically and soccer (gallop & expansion hopeful) need to show support as well for a rectangle only stadium.

Raiders and/or Canberra business group could consult with AIS individually and show interest in purchasing the stadium land themselves which gives them a better negotiating position down the track when stadium designs get decided.

Raiders could draw up plans and make public a massive development that would go close to fully fund the new stadium at civic. They could consult a stadium developer to draw up plans and then also show that the funding would almost entirely come from the development of the Bruce stadium land. Surely the Canberra public would like the fact that public money could be saved?

Bring up the fact that league and union could introduce female teams and rl touch content as well to make it a year round stadium.

Personally I feel the final decision is a massive play and something that should be hard faught for. Having a new indoor rectangular stadium in the countries capital with conference/meeting rooms and a convention center that can also have concerts/ esports/ league/ union/ soccer/ touch to schmooze the Aus gov would be a great win over the afl.

Gold Coast Titans consider quitting Cbus Super Stadium for Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium

TRAVIS MEYN and PETER BADEL, The Courier-Mail
May 21, 2018 8:00pm

THE Titans have sounded out Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium as a potential home ground in the strongest sign yet the Gold Coast could quit Cbus Super Stadium.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Titans powerbrokers were spotted touring Dolphin Stadium on Monday to inspect the venue’s $15 million upgrade.

The Titans are yet to reach an agreement with Stadiums Queensland to play their next home match against South Sydney at Robina on June 8.

And the Gold Coast is seriously considering hosting its lucrative Round 17 derby against the Broncos at the boutique Redcliffe venue on July 8.

The Titans have been embroiled in a three-year stoush with the government over exorbitant hiring fees which sees the club pay about $110, 000 to play each home game.

Sources spotted Titans CEO Graham Annesley, executive chairman Dennis Watt and co-owner Darryl Kelly visiting the Intrust Super Cup club’s home ground on Monday.

Annesley confirmed the visit when contacted by The Courier-Mail.

“We’ve said all along that Cbus Stadium is our home ground and it is where we want to play,” Annesley said.

“But we have to keep all of our options open in case we can’t reach an agreement with the government to hire the stadium on reasonable commercial terms comparable to market rates for other interstate venues.

“We’ve had discussions with a number of potential alternative venues should it come to that and Dolphin Stadium is definitely a strong contender.

“It is about to complete a major upgrade that would see work completed to coincide with our scheduled home game against the Broncos.”

The spat between the Titans and Stadiums Queensland has threatened to turn ugly on numerous occasions.

In 2015, the Titans were hours away from transferring a Broncos derby to ANZ Stadium in Sydney after growing increasingly frustrated with hiring costs.

Now under private ownership, the Titans have reignited negotiations in the hope of securing a discount which would take their annual hiring fees down from $1.3 million to around $800, 000.

Hosting a match at the 10,000-seat capacity Dolphin Stadium would cost a fraction of the price to hire Cbus.

The Titans have been somewhat hamstrung given Cbus is the only genuinely suitable NRL venue on the Gold Coast, but Annesley implored fans to support the club’s quest for a better deal.

“(Dolphin Stadium) is only just over an hour from the Gold Coast by road and has ample parking for patrons, something that is sadly lacking at Cbus,” he said.

“If we are left with no option but to relocate, I’d appeal to our members and fans to get behind us and support our fight for a fairer hiring agreement at Cbus.

“It is aimed at ensuring we can inject more funds into our football department to make the club more competitive on the field.”
