It's probably impractical and mostly pointless and expensive, but imagine an underground stadium with a glass roof at ground level that could be walked over as a public space, would look pretty cool

In the right place, with cafes and restaurants above where people could sit above it while eating and drinking would be awesome. A real feature and attraction for any smart city.

This gives a good indication of how the stadium has been finished externally.
Taken April 8th.

bloody beautiful. Well done to everyone involved. With a resurgence in Parras onfield performance, this joint will be rocking

Bit like the Louvre and how part of it sits under glass on the palace courtyard. Very cool. Would be ridiculously expensive and logistically a nightmare but geez it would be a world leading piece of architecture and become iconic.

OAF! But we need pollies like the ones that built the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House before they went jelly in the knees and pulled the pin on it mid stream. What are the chances of that?

They can't even build a statue now a days without cocking it up. And don't start me on some of the proposed arty farty sculptures they try to pass off as culture significant pieces costing us millions. Just like that ridiculous Clover Moore Vanity loopy loop project she is so hard for. $22m for a freakin loop! What a criminal waste of my freakin money and anyone elses in here district. I get that art is subjective, but a $22m loop? FFS!

Yeh we do lack people with big vision ideas generally. Cost has certainly become a deterring factor these days alongside public opinion. You simply couldn't afford to build some of the things they did at the beginning of the 20th century. Hell we just built a pretty avg footbridge across the Swan for the new stadium and it cost $75million! Imagine how much a statue of liberty would cost these days!

Imagine how well the atmosphere would echo around the stadium

The opera house would be the last real iconic building Australia has seen, may well be the last for a very long time? Fed square in Melbourne is interesting but hardly outstanding in any way. Our crazy city mayor wanted to build a massive monument in the middle of the swan river but got laughed down.

Doesn't have to be massive thing of course, I visited Chicago last year and "the bean" has become very iconic due to its interactive selfie nature.

Yeah the "Bean" does have some appeal. So it does work somewhat.

But where are the visionaries and truly great artist offerings? Surely we can do better?

If anyone had the balls to suggest something even close to the scale of our great landmarks, the politicians would drown it in petty games, and the public would bitch and moan about wasting money and the city is fine how it is and what about the schools and hospitals and farmers. Just take a look at the bloody stadiums.

That said, Parramatta is primed for a project of this nature. A unique landmark that draws people in and is the centre of a unique cultural district. A statement that Parramatta is its own city rather than a suburb of Sydney with a couple of tall buildings.

Mostly cost, Ive seen amazing concepts get stripped right back to bare bones due to cost. It would seem we no longer value interest and aesthetics over cost and return on investment. Also building materials to some degree. There's only so much you can do with steel and big planes of glass.

I have to say Optus stadium is a very very nice design and sits on the river bank majestically. Hats off to the design team and Govt for doing it properly externally as well as for function. Its rare for Perth where we tend to build some of the most ugly and bland structures!

Not so sure.

Fed Sq. Hahahaha!

Skyscrapers are ten a penny that look like that.
Fed square is interesting in that it was the first in Aus at least to use that style, there's been a number of copies since, in Perth both our Arena and Yagan square have used similar styling.

Not in Sydney. There won't be another in the country anything like this. Look at the u/c pic.
Anyway, getting o/t stadium wise, but Sydney is going gangbusters atm, in so many respects.

Thats the reason right there, cost would be one but the publics ability to scare politicians into not doing things these days would be the biggest.

IMO its a shame we probably wont see any more opera houses, Eiffel towers or statue of libertys anywhere in the world. Just gimmicky interactive things that are hardly a "monument" (if it isn't a symbol that represents a city on the world stage its not a monument).

It comes up often that Melbourne lacks a world class monument and that the time has passed for it to even build one. I'm surprised nothing more was built with all that gold money.

It's not entirely the public's fault - opposition governments and a hostile media trash anything of value and twist the public discourse.

Melbourne has Sydney beat on national reputation these days - its image within Australia is of a lively, thriving city while the Sydney has gained itself a sad reputation of a no-fun-town for property developers and and wealthy retirees to talk about real estate investments.
But internationally, Australia's images are still of Sydney's landmarks.
If Melbourne had the Opera House and Bridge we'd be f**ked up here!

If we're talking skyscrapers, "Green-spine" that was just announced in Melbourne looks pretty cool. The shaded out one next to it (Australia 108) will also be the countries tallest when finished (its about halfway-there looking out my window right now).

But still I don't consider skyscrapers to be monuments on the same scale as the more iconic ones such as the opera house and statue of liberty. You wouldn't see it on a postcard and instantly know where in the world it is.

(those crazy tall ones in the emirates are probably an exception)
