The NRL Grand Final could return to ANZ Stadium instead of the
SCG as originally planned.
It was announced last year the 2020 grand final would be played at the SCG with ANZ Stadium planned to be under construction at the time.
Despite being months ahead of schedule, the project at Moore Park, which has provided over 800 jobs during a time of economical complex, won't be available until 2022.
With the coronavirus outbreak forcing the league to reschedule the grand final for October 25, the location for the game's biggest day has remained clouded as the
T20 cricket World Cup gets set to cause a number of planning disruptions.
But according to
Nine News Sydney's Chris O'Keefe, an ANZ stadium grand final could be on the cards with the NSW government now on the verge of holding the allocated $800 million for the redevelopment.
"Across town (Homebush), no contracts have been signed and money hasn't been allocated," O'Keefe told
Nine News.
"The government is now looking at saving the $800 million on the redevelopment of ANZ stadium and temporarily mothballing the project.
"That way Sydney will have a showpiece stadium big enough to host the NRL Grand Final and State of Origin this year and
thwart Brisbane snatching the games.
"The Premier had planned for bulldozers to move in at ANZ and turn it into a rectangle at the end of June.
"Gladys Berejiklian (NSW Premier) is yet to make a final decision because she sees construction as the best way out of economic destruction."
