The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

That's all good in theory, but you're going to have a lot of fans who won't want to go to those stadiums. It's a very good TV product so they'll just stay home.
If the transport to/from the game is frequent, efficient & reliable, and the stadium is comfortable to sit in, with great viewing angles & close/steep grandstands, then WHY won't the fans go to those stadiums?

Improved public transport is a necessity right across Australia. The population has grown rapidly over the last 40 years and the infrastructure is about 10 years behind where it needs to be.
10 years?? You're lucky.

Here in NZ we're probably about 50 years behind in out transport infrastructure.. it's as if the Government just gave up & lost all ambition in the mid 1970s.

Sure we've had some improvement in the last decade, but we have a LOT of catch up on deferred projects that should have been done in the 80s/90s.

It’s not like you’re at the cricket for 7 hours…. The way I see it one plastic seat is as comfortable as the next one. Not much difference in the taste of the hot dogs either come to think of it… but geez the atmosphere at the suburban grounds shits on the centralised stadiums.

I give up trying to get a sane answer from Sydney RL fans. They contradict themselves trying to convince us that their small crowds at their dilapidated suburban grounds are good while denigrating big crowds for AwFuL games at the SCG and Donkeys games at Lang Park. One of them just said Bulldogs fans travel to the SCG to watch the Swans. But apparently we need small grounds all over Sydney because they won't travel to big grounds that aren't shit holes.

If they're willing to travel to watch The Swans at a world class venue but won't go far to see their NRL team play at one then maybe it's not really an RL city.

All Sydney local derbies played in bigger stadiums except Thursday Friday nights. All Sydney teams play out off town teams in 30000 seat stadiums.

The evidence is everywhere that newer all seater stadiums or at least improved facilities draw better than the suburban grounds:

Parra
Averaged 18k at Bankwest in 2018 when it opened, their 5th highest season average in their history, up 11k from the previous year. They had averaged 14k over the ten years before Bankwest opened.

Souths
80's pre-SFS average: 8k
SFS era (1988 to 2005): 9k
ANZ era (2006 to 2019): 15k

Dogs
80's & 90's pre-ANZ average: 10k
ANZ era (1999 to 2019) average: 17k

Broncos
Lang Park era (Suncorp Stadium - pre-rebuild, 1988 - 1992) average: 19k
ANZ Stadium era (1993 - 2001) average: 25k
Suncorp Stadium era (post-rebuild, 2001 - 2019) average: 31k

Canberra
Seiffert Oval era (1982 - 1989) average: 8k
Bruce Stadium era (1990 - 2019) average: 12k

Roosters
80's pre-SFS era average: 7k
SFS era (1988 - 2019) average: 12k

That is not even mentioning the same thing happening in AFL with all of the Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide clubs.

Atmosphere? Is THAT all you've got for an argument?

In a decently designed modern stadium (steep stands, close to the sidelines, modern amenities) there's TONS of atmosphere.

Problem is we haven't had properly designed 21st century stadiums that are constructed solely for footy until Bankwest was built... and you just have to see the effect THAT has had - now everyone wants their own Bankwest!

Precisely. Whereas if some of that money was spent on 3-4 strategically placed top-notch stadia (at transport hubs), and the rest ploughed into efficient public transport to get to those hubs, then win-win.. even for those who aren't sports fans, as they get transport upgrades.
Too logical, we can thank vlandys for the current stuff up of a once in a two decade opportunity to improve things in Sydney for the decades to come.

Don’t see how they’re going to do 30k seats for $300m, it’d be a very bare bones stadium. I think we’ll end up with 25k seats.

Ayres interview is interesting. Said 30k might be a stretch because of the lack of room but it will come down to if designers can propose a good solution.

The cost of the stadium has turned into “around 300mil” so seems like they’re posturing to afford a quality stadium if it ends up being 30k.

Its almost like some think Sydney is some sort of microcosm unique from the rest of the world. Its not. if a game is popular it will have no problem getting large numbers of people attend it. Literally every city in the world experiences this. Maybe the real question we are avoiding is why isnt the game in Sydney more popular?

but

its going to be a coliseum, shining light, a thing of beauty..

If panthers cant up their crowds to 20k plus in next decade then its a pretty sad state of affairs for the game in Sydney.

We would’ve averaged 18-20k this year sans covid. In our premiership year in 2003 we averaged 17.5k.

Still think 30k is too much, though.

Is that number so its eligible for other things like soccer internationals or something? Its not needed for the panthers but maybe is for other events?

if sharks could play out of a bankwest stadium within half hour commute and then sell the rest of the land off for property and actually keep the $50mill this time not use it to pay off debts or do things up wouldnt that be a good outcome? More residents for the pokie den as well.
Nah mate you just don’t get it… I’m done with the interstaters providing solutions for Sydney. I’ll leave you “experts” to it.
