Having my first experience of gio stadium tonight Canberra desperately needs a new ground! You could turn Guo into a decent 30k venue with two new end stands and decent roofing all around but probably cheaper to build a new one.

I applaud the brave 8k die hards who go to games in Canberra!

Having had to spend 12 years there (fortunately I am now back home in Qld), what it needs is a stadium in or very near the CBD with a fully enclosed roof like the one in Dunedin. Bruce (GIO) Stadium is well past its used by date.

Would need to be done in partnership with the Brumbies though, Canberra is too small for each code to have its own stadium.

You realise there's a light rail station practically right next to it, plus dozens of bus routes running through Broadway a few hundred metres away, right?

Light rail has a capacity of 2000 people per hour. On friday nights, busses are unreliable and take 20+ mins just to get from central to Glebe.

Westconnex will unfortunately increase Sydney's car dependency. It's called induced demand. Wentworth Park has even less parking than Moore Park.

Moore Park is in a shit spot but anyone advocating for an imaginary Wentworth Park option has absolute rocks in their heads.

Absurd. Ridiculous. Beyond foolish.

If they got their act together they could even speak to FAA about the supposed upcoming A League expansion and have it used all year.
A 20k capacity ground between 3 codes should be achievable in Canberra.

It will never get built for 20k, it will need to be at least 30k.

If the ACT Government is going to spend $200m+ on a stadium, they'll want it to be able to attract Wallabies tests, soccer internationals and the like to make its money back.

Not to mention Super Rugby finals are held at the home teams ground and the Brumbies would want higher capacity.

Yeah, something similar to the MRS would be ideal. Could easily save some $$$ on the flashyness of the design.

The design they're looking at is similar to the indoor venue in Dunedin. 25000 permanent seats on 3 sides with a vacant end that can have another 5000 to 7000 temp seats rolled in for larger matches when required.

It will be built on the site of the civic pool across the road from the convention centre right on the CBDs sthn edge.

We just need the labor govt thrown out of office in October so the ridiculous light rail project is stopped & 1 billion dollars of govt money becomes available of which some .. About a third , can be used for the stadium.

That sounds awesome.
I would head down for Parra games, last game I went to in Canberra (about 2008) I think it was minus 5 and Parra were down by 20 after about 10 minutes.

Except the Dunedin design can't work if Canberra wants an A-League team at any point in the future. How will a stadium with a glass roof go in Canberra in summer?

Yeah, sure. Not one person in Canberra wants a soccer team

A stadium with a glass roof doesn't work in a city where it's very hot for half the year.

Well there might be 2 people here who do
But that'd be it.
Soccer will have no say ... none at all in Canberras indoor stadium design. It will be there for them to use of course if they want to... But it will be almost a carbon copy of the Forysth Barr stadium.. built with a clear roof
This design has all but been signed off on.

What? No it hasn't. It was put on the backburner after the Mr Fluffy fiasco.

The last design was conceptual and showed an open roof.

I get it, you don't like soccer. But the stadium will need to cater for league, union and soccer if it's going to get built.

It will be built & it won't need to cater for soccer buddy.
They won't get any consideration at all & nor should they. Soccer has next to no presence in this city & isn't likely to any time soon.

League
Union
Yep
That's it , no one else needs to be consulted
These sports do more then enough to get it built on their own.
If soccer want to use the venue they can. But as a distant 3rd priority rectangle sport & as it comes with a clear roof.

Soccer hasn't had a say in any stadium agendas anywhere in Australia & it won't in Canberra either.
The sport is as irrelevant here as it is everywhere else in this nation.
