65k-70k is perfect.. who cares about fifa ..

I,m sure if we got the world cup.. MCG would want the final anyway

The MCG cannot host a World Cup match (let alone the final) without significant redevelopment, the dimensions are just way too big. In fact, there's not a single stadium in Victoria capable of hosting a soccer World Cup match, no matter what people down south try to tell you.

pfft, ANZ. renos will be lipstick on a pig anyway. souths and canterbury will still be regularly playing in front of 30-40k empty seats.

Different is you won't be able to see the empty seats as the stadium will have 3 modes depending on crowd size and there will be LED lighting and screens hiding unused tiers.

then i went on to post a really good example of a stadium which is immediately above your post.

Oz stad still won't be anything as good as that or Lang Park

EDIT: we'll see. just look at everything else built in this state. never lives up to the hype

But you make the claim with little to back it up.

There hasn't been a complete stadium built in NSW in around 20 years.

The stadium was compromised for a number of reasons, mostly the Olympics & oval sports. Removing that factors should see something like Suncorp.

Look at the plans for Parramatta stadium

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-...dium-plans-unveiled-by-nsw-government/8102628

Further look at the new stands that have been built at the SCG in the last 10 years. Or the excellent stands built in Newcastle.

Stadium design has changed dramatically & it just took Australia a bit of time to catch up. As long as ANZ is made rectangular it will be a significant improvement.

Exactly. Plus the increased rake of the stands means you will only see the lower bowl on TV. Improving the look dramatically.

Does anyone know when the new Parramatta stadium will be finished? I'd like to see the Tigers take a few games there as opposed to ANZ stadium.

It'll be sometime in 2019, but I doubt it'll be ready for round 1.

They can't really start ANZ until it's finished.

State backflip could lose grand final for ANZ Stadium
  • The Australian
  • 12:00AM August 1, 2017
  • Brent Read
The NRL could look to renegotiate its agreement with the NSW government, including a 20-year pact to host the grand final in Sydney, if there is a backflip on a deal to rebuild ANZ Stadium.

The Australian understands the memorandum of understanding between the state government and the NRL, which was agreed when the former announced their $1.6 billion stadiums strategy for Sydney, is largely contingent on the pledge to turn ANZ Stadium into a rectangular venue.

That agreement continues to be shrouded in uncertainty amid a push to have a large chunk of that $1.6bn commitment directed towards Allianz Stadium.

Weekend comments from SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd, also chairman of Greater Western Sydney, for ANZ Stadium to retain its ability to cater for AFL and cricket came despite neither sport having struck a blow at the ground in recent years.

If that was to happen, it would endanger the 20-year commitment that was struck between the NRL and state government last year to play grand finals and State of Origin games at the ground.

Talks between NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian in coming weeks are likely to be crucial as rugby league tries to cut off any attempt to direct pledged funds away from ANZ Stadium.

Greenberg has already sent a letter to the Premier outlining the NRL’s desire to see the ANZ Stadium rebuild go ahead as per the agreement which was struck last year. However, he is set to have face-to-face talks with Berejiklian in the next fortnight as he looks to reinforce the NRL’s position, which has the support of the clubs.

Events are being watched closely by the clubs who play at ANZ Stadium, in particular South Sydney and Canterbury, given both are locked into long-term agreements at the venue. The Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra also play games at ANZ Stadium but the Tigers could potentially move to Parramatta Stadium part-time when that ground is finished and the Dragons are looking to take games interstate or overseas.

The Bulldogs and Rabbitohs have more at stake given they are relying on the ANZ Stadium rebuild to improve the experience for their supporters. The clubs also hope a dramatic improvement in the venue will help grow their fan base and improve their finances.

Canterbury chief executive Raelene Castle said: “There certainly is no doubt that for the financial and crowd sustainability of the four clubs that play out of ANZ Stadium at the moment, that it needs to rebuild. We have been promised that by the state government.

“If you see the consistent crowds the Brisbane Broncos get at Suncorp — yes, it is close to the city but more importantly it is a great football experience — that is what Sydney needs to ensure that the live audience goes back to watching rugby league.”

State governments across Australia are keeping a close eye on proceedings. The Queensland government has made no secret of their desire to take the grand final to Suncorp Stadium, something Tourism and Major Events minister Kate Jones outlined as recently as last month.

Jones and the Queensland government have been patiently waiting for their NSW counterparts to make a final announcement on their stadiums strategy as they look to take the grand final to Brisbane as early as 2019.

Those plans depend on what happens with the ANZ Stadium rebuild. Should the state government honour its initial commitment, ANZ Stadium is likely to be out of action as a grand final venue for up to four years from early 2019. That timeline would be cut in half should the state government decide to close the stadium down while the rebuild is under way, meaning only two grand finals would be up for grabs.

However, if the state government elects to redirect money towards Allianz Stadium, all bets would be off. Queensland as well as the Victorian and potentially West Australian governments would be able to weigh in with bids to snatch the grand final from Sydney almost immediately.

the NRL should absolutely tell the NSW govt , there'll be no deal on GF's , origin , or any other sort of comittment to homebush if the venue isn't reconfigured into a permanent rectangle

as for the capacity
well the redp had a capacity of 72K only
so 67, 68K isn't a huge problem provided it is one of the best rectangle venues on the planet

that St Petersburg stadium is exactly what Sydney needs , exactly
if we can get the average for games played in a venue like that up to between 25K & 30K

plus the new venue in Townsville
plus a new venue in Canberra
plus better scheduling across the entire season

then we'll get to our 20K NRL average , just 10 years late lol

I would like to know the compromises that will once again shrink stadium capacity

Maybe we should have left it at 110k

And spend all of the renovation money on a new stadium

I think reducing capacity to 83k was their first dumb move

So have the NRL playing out of an even more cavenous stadium the last 20 years? Don't think that would've been a good outcome.

The 2002 renovation wasn't what was needed but it still improved the atmosphere at the venue.

the bright side is, we could take GFs on the road every year...

If ANZs capacity is about the same (or much smaller than others around the country), we could begin an NFL style roling schedual. Obviously Origin would only be in NSW once a year and, if the canberra stadium got its capacity near 40k, even that one game could be at risk for NSW. It would be great to have GFs in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and even Melbourne.

Cutting funding to ANZ wouldnt be all that terrible for NRL. Terrible for NSW Gov of course, but the NRL would open up a lot of options...

Delivery of the new 30,000 seat Western Sydney Stadium is progressing, with demolition of the old Pirtek Stadium and Parramatta Swimming Centre now complete and earthworks underway.

As part of earthworks, piling work will begin from Monday 10 July. Our working hours will continue to be 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-1pm Saturday. Noise and vibration levels are expected to be minimal.

The Stage Two Environmental Impact Statement is currently with the Department of Planning and Environment for assessment. A Response to Submissions report has been prepared to respond to issues raised during the exhibition period and is available at majorprojects.nsw.gov.au. Subject to approvals, construction of the new stadium is expected to start in August 2017

Moving a small potion of funds away from ANZ wont be bad, as long as the NRL get a BIG say in where it is directed...

Id love to see them take that money, ditch Moore park and build a 20k seater in a better location out of the f*cking SGC Trusts hands...

There's only one venue it would be smaller than.

And there's no way known Sydney won't host a state of origin match.

20k seater?!

Where's the room for growth? No stadium should be built smaller than 30k, that's an absolute minimum.

Anyway the dogs & Souths will go absolutely ape shit if ANZ doesn't get built, those two have the had the highest Sydney crowd averages of any teams this century.

Most USA nfl grounds are happy with around 70k capacity

And they are sold out most weeks

They could build them 120k if they wanted to but they choose not to

They have 120k college stadiums and the viewing angles are way too far away

It is supposed to be finished in time for the start of the 2019 NRL season.
