Imagine the up roar if the NRL proposed in the media they wanted the MCG reconfigured to rectangle but had removal seats to make it cricket/AFL friendly.

Media is AFL bias, each article need to include a line "this is a paid advertisement for the AFL", preferably at the beginning so we know which journalist is on the gravy train.

it's funny how Kate McClymont is always looking for something to investigate in the NRL yet won't go near the AFL with a barge pole

But you make the claim with little to back it up.

There hasn't been a complete stadium built in NSW in around 20 years.

The stadium was compromised for a number of reasons, mostly the Olympics & oval sports. Removing that factors should see something like Suncorp.

Further look at the new stands that have been built at the SCG in the last 10 years. Or the excellent stands built in Newcastle.

Stadium design has changed dramatically & it just took Australia a bit of time to catch up. As long as ANZ is made rectangular it will be a significant improvement.

i'm talking about infrastructure in NSW in general. Look at NW metro which stops at Chatswood because it isn't compatible with the heavy rail line, and how the new Eastern Suburbs light rail isn't compatible with the Inner West light rail. Can't blame me for being skeptical.

Parra looks heartening, but I'll believe it when I see it and feel it.

Stadiums & trains

Not sure there's a clear link tbh.

Re the trains. The NW Metro will only stop at chatswood for 2-3 years until the link to the city is complete. Surely a small price to pay for the north west finally getting a railway (my Father was campaigning for it in the 80's)

In regards to the light rail, when you see the trams that'll run through the city you'll understand why they can't stop on the inner city line. The trams are twice the length and therefore capable of carrying many more people. I was skeptical over this decision too but this line is expected to be very high traffic so it does make some sense. Inner west line can be retrofitted to make stations longer if necessary.

The station clearance issue has other problems. Why not just run shorter trams on a Randwick - Pyrmont service?

I live in Randwick and an upgrade of infrastructure was badly needed but I don't know if this light rail will be the fix they're promising. The density in the area is insane, we really needed a heavy rail link.

This is my problem with the current government (and the previous ALP mob too). They'd rather spend $2 billion on a flashy solution that will need to be re-visited in five years, than actually plan and commit to more expensive, but longer lasting solutions.

We're drifting a bit here, but to me the obvious solution was just to finish the Eastern Suburbs heavy rail to its original plan in the 60s, which would have extended it from Bondi Junction to Kingsford with stops at Charing Cross, Frenchmans Road, Randwick Junction and UNSW. Maybe even kick it on to Maroubra Junction and Eastgardens where there is now very-high density housing.

Because at the end of the day, the main issue this network is aiming to solve is not how to handle day 1 of an Ashes test or an ANZAC Day NRL fixture, but how to get tens of thousands of people to work in the city and to study at UNSW every day. And for that role, it seems a bandaid solution.

Yes, what you said is true. However, the SCG Trust cannot sell any of its lands off or erect units on trust lands. The use of trust lands for residential, visitor or tourist accommodation is specifically prohibited by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Act 1978. To change that, or to enable them to sell the land, the act would have to be changed, and the NSW Government is unlikely to get the numbers in the Legislative Council (the State's upper House) to support any such change, assuming it agreed to a proposal to do so.

Ridiculous stuff. Statistically speaking, based on averages, GWS will host the Swans in a final once every 38 years. (similar to NRL top 8 - 8 teams host a final each year, with a one in 17 chance that team is the Swans) . So to base a stadium strategy around that is sheer idiocy.
GWS will never need more than the 22K they have at Spotless for regular season games. Never. If they have a big final, the SCG holds twice that.
Down here Docklands was supposed to be a rectangular stadium. The AFL ensures it was multi-purpose, which ruined it for all sports (most AFL fans hate it and they virtually never bring the seats in for RL or soccer) They did same with ANZ the first time around. Swans don't want to play there, so it needs to be oval to please the 8K GWS fans in Sydney once every 38 years?
If this happens the NRL might as well hand over the running of the game to the AFL.
