We'll never see it.

The west metro is going to stop at Olympic park instead, it'll run from parramatta to the city.

Only two committed stops so far are Olympic park & rozelle

We're drifting a bit here, but to me the obvious solution was just to finish the Eastern Suburbs heavy rail to its original plan in the 60s, which would have extended it from Bondi Junction to Kingsford with stops at Charing Cross, Frenchmans Road, Randwick Junction and UNSW. Maybe even kick it on to Maroubra Junction and Eastgardens where there is now very-high density housing.

Because at the end of the day, the main issue this network is aiming to solve is not how to handle day 1 of an Ashes test or an ANZAC Day NRL fixture, but how to get tens of thousands of people to work in the city and to study at UNSW every day. And for that role, it seems a bandaid solution.

I know that was the original plan of the eastern suburbs line but I have read that it wasn't considered a good option because it was so indirect. Personally I think it'd be better to extend it down to the beach.

But I've also read that it's likely the 4th metro project might be an eastern suburbs line that would link in with the parramatta line that'll stop at Olympic park. Either way it seems the days of heavy rail are numbered, most new projects will be driverless metro trains.

The only reason it was somewhat indirect was because it followed the ridgeline all the way to Randwick to keep the gradient level. However, those proposed stops now serve the areas of highest density living and function as bus interchanges - so it would have looked like a masterstroke.

I think that line would have been ideal, with the light rail running along ANZAC Pde to meet its terminus in Kingsford, abandoning the run to Randwick up Alison Rd (which would be served by heavy rail) and forming a triangular route. Maybe with a single spur line along Alison to serve Randwick Racecourse as a special event line? If you kicked it all the way through to Maroubra you wouldn't be that far off the East Hills line at Mascot and loop proposals would be the next logical step.

I agree with the sentiment that's been expressed here by others. The NRL should deliver a very clear and public message to the NSW government that if a 72,000 seat permanent rectangular stadium with a closing roof is not delivered at Homebush as agreed then any commitment to play future Grand Finals or Origin matches in NSW will be considered void. The NRL will pursue putting such games out to annual tender and will also consider signing a long term deal with another state. It's the only real leverage the game has.

Obviously Origin would only be in NSW once a year and, if the canberra stadium got its capacity near 40k, even that one game could be at risk for NSW.

Regardless of the relative merits of the venues or cities, if the aim is to pressure the NSW Government to deliver on its upgrade commitments then allocating such games to another Venues NSW owned stadium (i.e. Newcastle) kind of defeats the point.

According to channel 9 Stadium Australia is to publish their business case for the stadium upgrade in two weeks time.

The original concepts to do a staged upgrade to a 70,000 roofed stadium cost has blown out to 1.6 bill,
The new concept is expected to demolish and start again.

Waste of time , the Prime Minister Alan Jones and the corrupt SCG Trust/AFL will get thier way for a new White Elephant in the eastern suburbs. Olympic Stadium will get the scraps.

If they propose that, they are dead.. surely an 18 year stadium has some re-usable features..

I wonder rather than "demolish", they are able to "Dismantle" and use the seats/sections to upgrade suburban grounds.

This has been done around the world with football/soccer stadiums.

Would probably cost a tonne more though, which would defeat the whole purpose of saving money.

If they are to demolish Homebush it won't be until Parramatta stadium is built....There was talk of kicking off the refurb next year , a year early.

Full refurbishment/rebuild within existing structures is rarely cheaper than knocking down and starting again due to the retro fit complexities.

I wish the politicians would treat the public with some respect, if it's cheaper it should be possible to sell it as the better option. Admit the original design was flawed & get it right this time.

Politically, screwing over western Sydney leading up to an election is unlikely. I'm as skeptical about politicians as the next bloke but the liberal party can't afford to be fighting western Sydney rugby league clubs leading into the next election.
