And why don't green voters like stadiums and entertainment precincts?

Better use of space than 24, 10 storey housing commission buildings.

I have no faith in this government's ability to both stick to their guns and sway public opinion to their side. If they continue as is the likely outcome is they'll be voted out and the opposition will pander to the Fitzsimmons petition followers. If either stadium does get rebuilt it will be years delayed. Sydney will wallow in 5th place sporting infrastructure mediocrity, adding to it's rapidly growing reputation as a backwards, boring, over-regulated NIMBY infested city.

As such we have to hope Greenberg manages to hold his own flimsy spine in place, and follow through on his threats to the NSW government.
Put Grand Finals up for bid to everyone except NSW.
No more than 1 State of Origin match per year in NSW.
No international RL in NSW.
I'd go a step further and pressure Bulldogs and Souths to pull out of the homebush white elephant too.

The NSW Government has less than 15 months to get watertight contracts in place and better yet knock both the f**kers down before the opposition can ruin this.

I just wish that Shepherd)(SCG Trust and GWS nimrod) had racked off,and ANZ was the one to be redone as a rectangular one. Then half the whiners would go back to their union/AFL/greeny holes.
SFS needs a facelift with more cover, end of story.

There seems to be a well organised campaign on the SMH comments site against the stadium spend... No doubt NSW Labor types will be reading with interest...

In my opinion.. the rebuild of Allianz is a step too far and not needed in the short term on top of the spend on Parramatta and ANZ...

If you buy the argument that we need a 70,000 modern stadium to ensure that Sydney doesn't miss out on overseas sporting events and concerts to the other capital cities, then why do we need shiny new 40,000 Allianz again? Seems to me to be very much a political decision that has benefited some influential people sitting on the board of the SCG Trust and few others...

Allianz needs something done to it. Can’t be left as is.

The question becomes how much money would a refurb cost, and is it even practically possible?

Even though I don’t like Tony Shepherd he raised some solid points.

Two biggest problems I see are female toilets & the security issues.

Fixing the toilets is probably possible, but perhaps not to the degree needed. But the security issues are very difficult to overcome in the current stadium. The big issue being egress. All the passage ways are way too tight for a big crowd. Take the area behind the seats on the bottom level, I don’t know how that can be fixed.

If you compare it to ANZ, which was built just 10 years after, it’s terrible for moving people out of the stadium. Now some of that comes down to location, but the internals of Allianz are a lot more narrow too.

I still believe the best solution for the site would’ve been a 30k seat club stadium. All big events at ANZ. This makes the security issues easier to overcome & would reduce the spend to $400m instead of $700m.

Everyone is blinded by the SFS having a great view.
Once you're in the corridors it's like being at any suburban ground, minus the grass. Cramped, not enough facilities, long lines for food, beer, bathrooms. The SFS is NOT a modern stadium.
Even the view is not as good as Suncorp.

I recently read that Brisbane's Gabba is being seen as well down the pecking order for cricket due to in part to inadequate, dated facilities. The Gabba's facilities shit all over the SFS.

ANZ is still the priority.

I'm no longer arguing ANZ v SFS, the government has made their choice to do both and retain the current capacities (or close) and I support that over having neither or just one.
I'm arguing against the idea that the SFS is fine, or more inaccurately that the SFS is anything resembling a modern stadium.

I thought we all agreed they both need doing.

Once the SCG trust raised the fear of terrorism the SFS was always going to get rebuilt, imagine being the government that said no to fixing the security issues that were raised and then having a terrorist attack or some other big emergency at the ground. They would get hammered!

Correct. Who is he to proclaim there is 'zero' public demand for a redevelopment of ANZ stadium as a fact. I worked with a few of these types in Sydney who lived on the lower north shore (as this egg does) Lived in Sydney their whole lives but had never travelled west ever. And no west is not a trip to Strathfield.

I'll bet my left one that they both wont get done and if it came to a choice of upgrading only one than I would be wanting ANZ...

Of course with Allianz going first....

The political pressure is now, and demolition doesn’t occur until late 2018, so it only matters who goes first if labor win.

I expect if we see a back flip on this from the govt it will be in the next few months, so they could still easily backflip on Allianz.
