It's one big tease at the moment. I just want to see games at the new cowboys and Parra stadiums, the atmosphere will be insane on TV and at the ground.

Just remind me when Parra is supposed to be completed? I'm assuming it won't quite make round 1 2019 but will be finished at some point during the season.

Would love to see a summer televised nines series. Doesn't have to have any NRL stars, could be young kids, players out of state cups, retired NRl players etc. Union 7's doesn't worry about crowds so why should we. Take it to spots that don't get much NRL action and include state or city based teams as well some international flavour and womens comp.

Got to be worth a few mill of TV money and be better than the current summer sht sport that Fox shows!

RL has a 9's world cup in 2019 so the concept will be expanded at club level too overtime. I like the summer series concept and I like the idea of having recently retired stars alongside fringe NRL players to sell tickets (a bit like when Freddy played for the Roosters a few years back).

I know they currently stream it online and maybe last year showed a game or two. In my opinion they haven’t really had a good crack. I’ve been a rugby league/touch fan my whole life and have yet to see 1 touch game on fta. If they could commercialize it with good camera angles and professional broadcasting I’m sure a lot more people would be interested in it.

Didn’t know about the SOO games 10-15yrs ago but why haven’t they given it another crack. Yes I do remember the 2015 WC thing but played 2nd fiddle to the Nrl. Having it stand alone with a nines type festival atmosphere during the summer months and promoting a healthy, fitness, mixed, inclusive type of event would be great. With the current ground swell of female sports and activity if developed right, I can’t see it not working. Suncorp, Anz, mcg, Optus oval/Perth rec, adelaide all gov owned. The gov can open the doors for free and trl can charge a gold coin donation. All these comps are already happening but by broadcasting it, bringing on sponsors etc helps elevate the importance of the competition. And could engage the general public in the summer months.

A lot of people use whatsapp or other apps to communicate via message or voice when in the stadium. Its just not for surfing the net.

For instance the other night at Suncorp for Foo Fighters, trying to get my mate to grab me a beer when he was up getting one for himself, the message never got to him to well after we left because the mobile network was jammed witb 40k odd people within the stadium using the phone network at once. Not first world issues for a beer but if someone is trying to message you in an emergency or trying to send funny Ben Hunt dropping the ball in the 2015 GFmemes, well you’d never get it, or a lot later than when the sender intended it.

Touch has actually tried to get a foothold on TV during summer a number of times, similar to what you are talking about was the Beach Footy competition they had over multiple weekends back in 2007, this actually included NRL players including Mark Gasnier, Andrew Johns, Gordon Talis and Anthony Mundine. Again it struggled to rate. I was actually excited about the concept at the time to see NRL players playing touch but ultimately playing it in the sand slowed the game down too much.

Interestingly enough a women's touch team drew with a NSW Blues team that included Gasnier, Ben Hornby, Matt Cooper and Luke O'Donnell

I guess you have to take it for what it's supposed to be and not a miniaturisation of the same game. What AFLX seemed to remove was the rolling maul that is prevalent in the game at the moment, with increased ball movement and scoring, which on the face, makes it more attractive to watch.

I guess that's what NRL 9s is also trying to achieve? More enterprising play, more space for playmakers and runners to do their best work and hopefully leading to more exciting play and scoring?

All new sports will naturally evolve over time, but the premise of a shortened version of any sport at the moment is to take out some of the most frustrating aspects of the longer forms and make it more exciting and appealing to watch.

I stumbled across an article about the tv deal and Optus back in 2015 and it eluded to Optus probably wouldn’t be interested because of the production costs outlay. I’m not sure what they actually are for Foxtel and 9 put surely in this day and age the new stadium can go someway in accommodation this issues. If Anz and parra have a combined 100+ nrl games/events between them surely a purpose built broadcast room should be built with the stadiums. This could allow for direct and easy access for crew and synchronicity for on-field cameras, thus lower production cost potentially enough to do in-house in conjunction with Nrl-tv. This would allow our tv rights to grow even more due to the fact production cost are removed or at least lessened dramatically.

6/7 x cameraman per field $600k
2/3 broadcast production people. $200/300k
So for $3mil/yr (Anz $1.5m/parra $1.5mil) make it $4mil/yr for extra costs. 100plus games seems bloody good deal. These same cameras and cameraman could be used for other Nrl.com productions. I think the Nrl production costs do let us down compared to the afl and is a issue that needs to be looked at and the stadiums can help in that regard. Same goes for suncorp

I think you will see both Foxsports and Nine sub-contracts the production of the NRL coverage out to NEP.
and they only have the commentators and director a small production crew on the direct payroll.

This time 12 months ago they'd just started demolishing the old stadium.
Progress has been pretty swift.
And yes, it's going to be brilliant. More like European and English football stadiums then the patchwork shit boxes we have built here in the past.
I have to give it to the NSW Government. They held forums before the planning stages with interested parties - Eels and Wanderers fans, and both the clubs, and pretty much everything that was requested (mainly by the fans) has been incorporated into the design. Steep stands, fully roofed, close to the action etc...... All the things that improve the fan experience and atmosphere.
Fans of all the rectangular codes are going to love this joint.

Just as long as we tell AFLX to f**k off.

I’ve only ever experienced corporate facilities at suncorp but it will be interesting to see the difference at the new parra stadium. Is that level I can see also the corporate box level? If so the lower view will give a interesting outlook over the field.

The entire upper level of the western side will be multi-level corporate facilities in the style of more recent American stadiums like the 49ers new stadium in SAN Jose as well as field level facilities around the players tunnel. What you can see in the construction pictures is the south-east corner (see the first picture below for view from that corner).

Muchos expensive premium seating to sell for maximum game day profit. One of the big flaws with Alliance Stadium is that it was built with hardly any corporate space to sell on game day. What they’ve added since is either exposed or boxes in the stadium corners. And they can’t charge top dollar if the facilities are substandard or offer a less than first class view. It’s the unspoken reason tenants and the Trust want a complete rebuild.
