Brookvale latest.

My only disappointment about this redevelopment is that they haven't taken advantage of building the stand bigger to have a higher capacity.
This pic shows that there is plenty of room to have a larger top tier.
Probably had something to do with sightlines and local NIMBYS.

sad thing it is shouldn't be a pipe dream, it should be what the club and council partnered on to give the region a stadium that secured the long term future of an nrl club. Other places are using development like this to fund the stadium development.

So it looks like Brisbane will ge the 2032 Olympics. Whilst the oval sports will be the big winners with the Gabba likely to be rebuilt at 60k - 65k, they should be funds to upgrade a few rectangular stadiums for the soccer, hockey, etc. NRL should be taking to QLD govt over the next two months regarding this before they make a decision on a second Brisbane club.

they have 3 rectangular stadiums, how many does the olympics need? From memory london only used wembley and twickenham. Early rounds of the soccer were played around the country,

Sweet... (FIFA WC would be the better one, but that aint f*ckin likely.)

The exciting thing for RL will be the city developments that will come of this (local venues, training facilities, etc)

For stadiums (hopefully):
- Turn the Gabba into a 100k behemoth (it will be amazing seeing the VFL play infront of 5k in there). Brisbane could grab the GF off of Sydney and use it for Origin/Magic Round/etc.
- Maybe a small investment in Suncorp and Robina

The main Olympic stadium now has to be only 60k, so it will be that or just over. Ao you would not move games from Suncorp. AFL and cricket crowds will likely increase in any brand new stadium.
There won’t be any new rectangle stadiums but possibly some upgrades to facilities, access, etc.

The main Olympic stadium does not have to be the athletics venue though - just the venue for the ceremonies. This is what happened at Rio where the Maracana was used for the ceremonies (70,000) whilst Stadium Nilton Santos (42,000) was the athletics venue.

Suncorp could be increased to 60,000 for the ceremonies. Look at the Gabba on Google Maps - it’s hemmed in by main roads on two sides. I could see it getting a decent tart up to say 40-45k, and being used as the Athletics venue.

The real chance here, is if we have Brisbane 2 by that point at either Ipswich or Redcliffe to push for it to be a soccer and Rugby 7s venue to try and get a good 25k second stadium somewhere in Brisbane.

East-west config is likely in that situation. If they expanded the field in that direction, you'd either have the legacy of footballers and batsmen staring into the sun, or the widest cricket/AFL field in the country.

Is there much more room to fit another 10k seats at Lang Park? It seems to suffer similar footprint issues to the Gabba, if not worse.

I think if they redevelop the western stand at suncorp to mirror the east it can bring capacity to 61500. I’ll try find the article from years ago.

You would need to totally rebuild Suncorp to add 10k. Can’t see them doing that just for the Ipe img Ceremony.
The Gabba will need improvements to remain a test venue so reckon that will be the main venue. It would have to accomodate a running track so it could be rebuilt a little narrower and wider, and could stick out above the street like the MCG does. Perhaps knock down one side only.
Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

The submission proposed a new 50K stadium for ceremonies and athletics.

The IOC response was not to build a new stadium but rather use Metricon (in Commonwealth Games 40K config) for athletics and the Gabba for ceremonies. Suncorp playing area is too small for either so it won't be used. So it looks like no-one will get a new stadium.

Games likely to be branded Queensland 2032 rather than Brisbane.

Be nice if Redcliffe or Ipswich (whoever gets the license if the nrl expands) got a 25k stadium out of it but hard to see qlnd govt having appetite for $250mill stadium in the outer suburbs.

Anyone read Roy's article in the Herald. Talked about NRL pitch to have a 25K stadium at the site of Bangaroo back when Dave Smith was running the show. Current Crown casino area, it could have been the NRL's version of Docklands in a prime location.

Springfield or North Ipswich should be in line for a boutique stadium if the Jets get up. Also Perry Park at Bowen Hills was proposed as a site for the Bombers. There’s talk of an athletes village at or around the Albion railyard and Ascot Park Raceway was to be used for some ceremonies. Early days but Brisbane will be getting something.
There was talk pre-COVID of SEQ/Qld going for the 2032 Olympics and having a high speed rail networks. If this goes ahead due to The Olympics being held in SEQ getting crowds to NRL games would be more appealing to Toowoomba or GC/Sunny Coast residents

The Gabba grandstand actually overhangs Stanley St, only in Brisbane....
