The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

What I'm getting from this thread is Sydney RL fans won't travel long distances to see their clubs play, so the NRL needs to have 9 or 10 clubs scattered around the Sydney metropolitan area to cater to everyone. This policy will kill the game because it a) forces other heartland areas to be under served and b) prevents expansion into new markets. It's a classic example of lunatics running an asylum.

How about this proposal?

A brand new stadium in Penrith to go with Parramatta Stadium and the SFS to cover three important locations. The refurb of Stadium Australia in Homebush makes it four locations. That works nicely for Penrith Panthers, Parramatta Eels, Sydney Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers to grow their fanbase by playing out of quality stadiums.

I don't think any money should be wasted on Brookvale, Endeavour, Kogarah and Leichhardt. Manly can relocate north to Gosford and play out of its quality stadium as the Central Coast Sea Eagles.

Dragons can move to Wollongong to become the Illawarra Dragons, with a bit of money spent on building a grand stand on its eastern terrace, provided it's safe to do so given its proximity to the sea.

Sharks to Adelaide.

West Coast Pirates get the 18th licence. 19th and 20th licences go to NZ 2 and Brisbane 3.

This footprint will add money into our game. The Sydney teams don't bring much money into the game. The Dolphins signed a sponsorship deal that dwarfs almost every club in Sydney, despite not playing a game until 2023. Cowboys, Storm, Broncos and Titans have more lucrative sponsorship deals than the Sydney clubs. Storm, Broncos and Cowboys are watched on TV by more people across the nation than the Sydney clubs.
A Stadium plan that covers Sydney AND does up our major stadium? So simple and logical. Are you off your f***ing head for thinking we'd be smart enough to do that?

The large sponsorships go to the clubs, it is actually the Sydney club that generate most of the media revenue for the nrL. If you start tearing away at the fabric of the game (Sydney) you are taking a massive risk.

I doubt there was ever a guaranteed amount. In fact focussing on suburban grounds and a anz roof may save the state govt some money, we’ll done vlad for thinking of the tax payer lol.

if anz is costing $120 and they are just doing up the four proposed grounds rather new stadiums then final bill could be well under the $800mill
it might be more then 800 mill then if thats the case mr glass half empty lol

It’s not like the posted solution below hasn’t been suggested already but at no point did you factor in the financial positions of the clubs you moved from their core location or the impact to any junior development in the area so why would the NRL even close consider it

A couple of the more obvious ones;

- Moving Manly to central coast has failed once it would absolutely fail again. Not to mention the changes already made to brookvale absolutely guarantee they are going nowhere.

- Taking the dragons and moving them to the gong sounds like a fun idea (especially for sharks fans) but the reality is the following in Sydney is still strong enough to keep them playing half at oki. See bit about sharks moving regarding coverage.

- Now the sharks to Adelaide. Where do I begin… juniors let’s begin there. The sharks now have the 3rd biggest (behind parra and Penrith) junior base in Sydney. Removing them in addition to the dragons takes rugby league out of the space between redfern to cronulla to Campbelltown. The NRL and networks would not agrrr this so smart handing this back to the Aleague.

Not to mention the financial position the sharks are in right now. Sponsorship is full and a waiting list exists. Some strong board appointments, savvy property acquisitions with more to come, the development half done and proposed self funded stadium upgrades planned suggests there is no criteria reason to move them.

- Adelaide - why do you think this in an overwhelmingly obvious win for the NRL. Don’t just “cos it’s not Sydney”.

- Perth more likely to work. Although a long way away… let’s give them 18 and see what happens.

- 19 and 20 is a stretch. How many players have the dolphins got so far?

I think it’s stupid for one, to upgrade Homebush in its current condition, and two, if we are building a new Homebush from scratch don’t reduce the size. I say tear it down and build the best 100k seat rectangular stadium this world has seen. Only use for SOO, GF, Big Sydney derby finals, Internationals(Big soccer matches), and matches like Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac etc.
that’s goal, think big not small.
Yes! National rectangle stadium for RL, RU and Soccer like the MCG is the national oval for AFL & Cricket

If that article in yesterday's Sunday Tele is to believed two of Sydney's highest rollers in the finance world have just joined the Sharks board of directors.

Sorry to curb the wet dreams and masturbation fantasies of the Queensland & WA nutjobs in here the Sharks will be always be playing in Cronulla at Shark Park.

Ah what do we have here. Looks like yesterday's story is true.

Take away Broncos, Storm and Cowboys and ratings will plummet across the country, and so too will their worth to the broadcasters. Take away Sharks, Sea Eagles and Bulldogs and the ratings most likely go up, as they're some of the least watched teams.

Canterbury are one of the richest clubs in the game with a massive fanbase to go with it.

The Dogs won't be going anywhere either.

The net gap in viewership of taking away the sharks and adding in Adelaide would be neutral at best. While at the same time giving up a demographic with a population of 230K for a city with a total population of 1.3M seems quite risky given the juniors linked to the area.

You can stop talking about relocation, unless a club dies it won’t happen so don’t waste your time.

Northern Eagles failed because it wasn't a full time Gosford team and Manly sabotaged it. Crowds in Gosford were great until Manly started poisoning the well.

If there's not enough players for a 17th team then we'll need to get rid of a Sydney team. Brisbane 2 is worth way more to the broadcasters than some small Sydney club that draws low TV ratings. In 2020, Broncos Storm and Cowboys were 1st, 4th and 6th most watched teams across FTA and Pay TV, despite Broncos and Cowboys finishing 16th and 14th on the NRL Ladder.

Sea Eagles, Sharks and Bulldogs were the 11th, 12th and 13th most watched clubs across Ch9 and Fox League. Only Titans, Raiders and Warriors were watched by fewer people.

If the NRL sticks with 9 teams in Sydney then it will have no one to blame but itself when it falls further behind AwFuL. Without the broadcast revenue, which is propped up by Broncos, Storm and Cowboys, at least 2 or 3 of the Sydney clubs would have folded over the last 5 to 10 years.

I don't see a lot of kids running around in NRL jerseys or attending games these days. Our game is in for a lot of trouble when us older folk start dying off over the next 40 years. Ratings will nose dive and we will be where RU is now, possibly worse as they at least have a presence in Perth. Broadcast rights will dry up and Sydney clubs will fold. Players will head across to European RU. When that day arrives the ARLC will wish they invested more in developing the game at the grassroots level across the country and focused less on saving unprofitable Sydney clubs.

Sure let’s fold the clubs that are unable to meet the criteria. Why are sharks going to Adelaide?

How about we get rid of the Titans then?

Their crowds are atrocious and most of the time they get outnumbered by the opposition team's fans.

The only thing keeping those jokers in the league is AFL's Gold Coast Suns.

Don't the AFL have 9 clubs in Melbourne (including the Geelong Cats)?

In the past I've suggested this, but I am against it now because they have a strong ownership model, get better crowds than many Sydney teams and have a quality stadium. All they need is some success and stability. They'll never be the Broncos or Cowboys, but they can become a middle-tier club that serves a strategically important region.
