A further 12 players in the squad also played in the A League. Maybe the standard of the A League has been underestimated. And yet those group of players were so close to equalising right at the death in the round of 16.

If the A League survives and thrives, then the NRL will only benefit, as it would have another code to walk side by side in terms of pushing for stadium funding.
It’s not even as popular now as the nsl was that went broke

too many football codes in Australia and too many clubs as well

foxtel losing interest in the a league is a key of how poor the sport is

even played in summer so it doesn’t compete with afl or nrl it gets poor crowds and even worse tv ratings

crowd average is under 10k

The A-League' biggest problem is the FFA killed the junior development system that created Australia's golden generation. The old NSL model allowed skilful players from all socio-economic backgrounds to get to the AIS through their local clubs and representative teams. When they reached the AIS they would play a lot of games against youth teams from South America. Our youth teams chalked up many victories in the 90s.

The new system allows kids from wealthy families to buy their way into an academy. It's very expensive too, costing more than $2k a year. Talented players from lower socio-economic backwards miss out. The current system rewards kids who grow quickly at a young age, so we end up having a lot of taller players with poor dribbling skills just because they could be used as strikers in youth teams and score goals from headers. Some one like Harry Kewell wouldn't be given a chance today due to his smaller stature. The best soccer players in the world tend to be shorter than ours and come from countries where people aren't very tall, which makes sense as a person with a lower centre of gravity will have better agility and acceleration. These are two vital skills of this game and ones our players struggle to master. It's why the standard of soccer in Australia today is way down on where it was towards the end of the NSL. This problem ain't unique to the FFA. Tennis Australia is just as guilty of placing profit over player development.

NRL fans should be pushing for a strong A-League as it will improve our chances of getting better stadia.

Attendances are down because the A-League splintered the Sydney and Melbourne markets. Roar have moved to a shit stadium based away from their fanbase.

That table is complete horseshit.

Where's all the lower tiers of English football (for example)

The A League has expanded to quickly and will be contracted within the next few years.

The NRL would be insane to rely on its growth for any infrastructure in Australia.

Is a Penrith Stadium really a good ROI?

Purely on Stadium no.

There is going to be over 1 million extra people out here in the next 10 years. Some sort of Entertainment area will have to be built.

Qudos Bank Arena cost $200m in 2000 to get built, So going for an indoor arena to hold 10-15k is still costly. Lack of regular content also.

So when you weigh up the Original upgrade money + the potential new arena. Then it makes sense for a new Stadium that can do both

Fumblers come in 3rd and they used to get 36k before they added the two Mickey Mouse teams

they really kick it out of the park In crowds

league will never get close to those crowds ever the absolute best they could hope for is 20k average

even though pl ranks second they have massive clubs in the leagues below. I think the champ averages itself over 20k and division one 15k plus then 9k Division 2

There's a few reasons why the A League is struggling for crowds and ratings. One of them is the perception of the A League been a poor standard product on the field.. Add to that, it is harshly compared to the EPL.

Now when you look closely at the current Socceroos squad, 20 of the 26, are current or ex players of the A League. From this squad, amazingly, Australia had it's best ever world cup in terms of points, eclipsing the 2006 "golden generation" team which included players from the EPL, Serie A etc.

So many of us have underestimated the standard of the A League and the Socceroos.

Now some people on here may say that the NRL shouldn't rely on another code to get funding for stadiums. But geez, if Penrith had an A League tenant, then who knows, construction might have started by now.

But in reality, the Panthers are on their own, and right now, none of us know if a new Penrith stadium gets the go ahead.

Soceroos making it to the round of 16 doesn’t make the a league a credible soccer competition lol

all the real soccer fans are watching premier league anyway

it’s the equivalent of the third tier of soccer in England

it would be like an australia. Rugby league fan wanting to watch the championship in English rugby league

every four years it gets a bump if australia make the World Cup then it goes back to irrelevance

and the cowboys got a new stadium as the sole tenant

Penrith will too because of the election

or do you think they should add a 3rd western Sydney a league side after the MacArthur team is a major failure

"Soceroos making it to the round of 16 doesn’t make the a league a credible soccer competition lol"

When it comes to the A League, a number of people are negatively set in their ways. It's up to football administrators to change that.

"all the real soccer fans are watching premier league anyway"

There's more to soccer than the EPL. Plus real soccer fans would go and watch local leagues, state comps etc, similar to NRL fans. There's more to Rugby League than just the NRL.

"and the cowboys got a new stadium as the sole tenant"

Cowboys are the only team in Townsville. Different situation. Townsville doesn't have nine NRL teams.

If a new stadium at Penrith does happen, than Abdo and PVL should get alot of credit.

I’ve got a mate who stays up to watch most Liverpool games live (yeh he’s mad).

he doesn’t watch a league

your missing my point

why watch it when it’s such a low standard

you’ve literally got the premier league where clubs are worth 5 billion pounds and you have a league where the clubs are worth basically nothing

then they have to compete with juggernauts like afl and rugby league.

even as a summer sport with no major direct competition from football codes they struggle for attention.

between super rugby and a league one of those comps dies off imo

population wise Penrith and the area around it would be similar to north qld or it will with the population growth underway

difference between fumbling and the NFL, EPL etc. is that they have lots of high drawing games in Melbourne with two equally-sized groups of supporters there. Should be asterisked really. Imagine the EPL average if every game between two London clubs was at Wembley.

Obviously soccer in England dwarfs pretty much any other world football code except the nfl

but the fumblers do pretty well for themselves

even more so cause the sport is awful

makes you wonder why we don’t do better with our product

our clubs really are lazy

You are kinda missing my point too. If the A League is of poor standard, then the Socceroos should have lost all three games at the WC. Heck, should not have qualified for the WC. Most of them started their career in the A League, along with current players.

I'm not saying the A League is of great standard either. Maybe somewhere in between. If people don't want to watch the A League then that's fine. But don't expect Australia to go gangbusters at a world cup like reaching the semis.

Like I said in my previous post, it's up to football administrators to change the narrative.

But anyway, this is a stadium thread. We are off topic. If Super Rugby and the A League die off, then it will be harder for the NRL to get stadium funding. Meanwhile the AFL and cricket work together to get the best possible outcomes for their grounds.
