The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It’s pretty self explanatory isn’t it?

Historically the Sports Commission has been loath to maintain their infrastructure to standards that the ACT needs for its community and sports teams to benefit from them. That has lead to a situation where it’s become expected that the ACT ratepayer will fund upgrades and maintenance of the stadium and arena that are federally owned.

In other words the ACT ratepayer has been forced to sink 100s of millions of dollars into stadiums and arenas they don’t own to keep them functional, but don’t actually get any of the benefits of ownership of those assets as a result.

Where the revenue from the stadium should go is constantly up for debate, we don’t own them so we don’t have the right to sell them, and every time something needs repairing or upgrading there’s a big bureaucratic debate as to who’s job it is to pay for it.

The ACT not owning the stadium and arena has also been the single biggest hurdle in getting them replaced. If the ACT owned them the land they are on would have been sold to developers to fund construction of new ones a decade or more ago, and you and I wouldn’t be having this discussion at all.
Sounds like a storm in a teacup

if the money comes for a new stadium it won’t need major upgrades for 30 years

I can’t see the feds putting in more than 300 million max so the act govt will need to top that up for a roofed modern stadia

A fumbleball dweeb at work ( white skinny four eyed & unpopular) much like the sport here
is adamant the 20th team will be Perth 3
They have the stadium & the market with Perths population tipped to hit 2.5 million in 10 years time

Canberra is not big enough & there isn't enough corporate support for another elite sports team here.
The Raiders realised this 20 years ago & diversified its income streams to cover this issue.
Does anyone have a problem with the bye this season? I hardly notice it. No reason you can’t stick with an odd number of teams if there is no strong bid for another team. With the relative failures of GWS and Suns, I doubt they would be keen on Canberra (which would do better than GWS or Suns but still be miles behind all other AFL clubs). There is nowhere else that could sustain an new AFL team.

The NRL should not add an extra team unless/until a strong option is ready.

Over the last four years, three new stadiums have opened- Commbank, Qld County Bank and Allianz. So now the NRL could look towards lobbying for the next three.

1. Western Parkland City
Sydney is split into three cities, Western Parkland City, Central River City and Eastern Harbour City.

View attachment 73263

Eastern Harbour City has Allianz stadium, Central River City have Accor and Commbank. With Western Parklands City, there is a choice of either Campbelltown, Liverpool or Penrith. Plus the Western Sydney Airport is on track to open in 2026.

2. Canberra
When Hobart is made official, than the two codes (NRL and RU ) who buttt heads with one another should leave their issues aside, come together and lobby for a new stadium to the PM and Andrew Barr. And if an A League side comes in, the FA should also join in.

3. Perth
If the NRL want to become a truly national sport, then team 18 should be based in Perth. Unfairly cut during super league, they need to be given another chance just like Gold Coast (Titans) and Brisbane 2 (Dolphins). Old Perth Oval- HBF Park needs an upgrade.

Of course we should never forget other grounds like Win, Newy or Mt.Smart. Other suburban grounds shouldn't be discounted either, but IMO, they are probably down the pecking order, particularly from the main three.

Hopefully when Western Parklands, Canberra and Perth are done the rectangular codes should look towards Accor and Suncorp as major priorities.

That was the thinking behind Penrith

BTW the West goes up to the Hawkesbury, Penrith was in the middle and the only area with a FT tennant.

Hence why it was chosen somehow like with Allianz it became an NRL only venue instead of for the region

Probably need to draw a bigger circle on the map to include Hawkesbury.

Now if the outcome is a negative for both the Pacway and the current site, is there another location at Penrith for a new stadium? Is the Pacway the only top alternative?

Canberra is more likely to get an oval stadium before a rectangular one. It is really in the best of the Raiders to move away from Canberra

Western Sydney is definitely needed. Perth would be nice, although not sure if that will happen

I reckon the new Hobart stadium will be a catalyst for a new rectangular Canberra venue. Time to lobby Albanese and Barr.

Tbh I am lost as to why the feds are funding stadiums in Tassie. We will now have three state of the art stadiums for a small population which is reluctant to attend sports events. Must be something else up. Might be a sop to the fumblers pending a big investment in league e.g. PNG?

Maybe. Maybe they just prefer giving money to the fumblers

IF (big if) this were to ever happen where do we think it would be?
North Hobart Oval?

IMO the best set up for a city is to have its premier rectangular and oval stadiums in the same precinct, but I'd assume the waterfront precinct the new oval is being built in has no room?
