Cricket NSW calls for 15,000-seat Newcastle stadium

The governing body of cricket in NSW has identified Newcastle as an infrastructure priority and wants to see a new 15,000-seat oval stadium built in the city, while it also says a SCG Masterplan is needed.

Cricket is dying despite their history, political clout and ability to market themselves as ‘national sport’.

It is mainly its history it trades on because as a national sport it is blown away by soccer in reality.

They’ve been talking about this for Newwy for years. Number One Sportsground isn’t even capable of hosting Sheffield Shield matches anymore.

But with them reducing the number of Big Bash games, there aren’t as many games to go around anymore. Secondary grounds aren’t getting as many games any longer, so it’s hard to see the economic case for a ground that might only host one or two professional games per season.

Nobody seems to be aware of how the AFL have weaponised stadium lobbying.

They learnt a huge advancement strategy with the Olympic Stadium. Advocating ‘mixed-use’ or ‘multi-sport’ only benefits one sport in reality - theirs. While inhibiting every other.

They have employed this in every city in Australia where they have branch offices.

Hell you’ll see them going for a ‘mixed-use’ stadium in Newcastle soon.

Whilst we’ve improved in other areas they’re smashing us in stadium lobbying and this is just the latest example that they’re still doing it. They can use Accor and the SCG is the same size as Allianz, in Gold Coast & western Sydney they have similar size & quality stadiums. So now if this gets through Brisbane they’ll have the same size stadium that will rarely get anywhere near capacity, but the price tag of it will put off any Suncorp expansion for a long time, meanwhile Suncorp will continue to sell out several times a year and will be 30 years old when the olympics rolls around.

Next will be Canberra, the AFL will only have to hint at a team there for the “multi-use” “one stadium for all” BS agenda to really start.

I don't believe it ever was a stadium for the AFL though. They just happened to be the beneficiary.

We should be sweet given that the Gabba will be getting funds too. Suncorp's boundaries mean that they can only really go up and not out. I can't see Suncorp being ruined, it's a sacred place for Queenslanders and part of the Brisbane identity.

The Olympics were a totally different beast when Sydney were planning. I mean, look at Paris. They're having the Opening Ceremony down the Seine - a rectangular stadium will be fine.

It’s only the western grandstand that needs redevelopment. I imagine the Broncos will continue playing at Suncorp during construction but with a slightly reduce capacity.

I don't think that we could get a full level 7 bowl for $500m, but maybe the level 7 corners could be done and a 3-4 tiered western stand. Would love to see 65-70k. So keen to see some designs.

It’s a double whammy for them because if the world’s second ever most expensive stadium got built at Victoria Park it would have put any Suncorp Stadium upgrades on the back burner for quite some time.

Checked the Brisbane reddit page it’s full of people frothing about how embarrassing it will be for Brisbane, coincidentally a lot of them have lions singlets on their avatar or whatever it’s called. Obviously the numbers have spoken for themselves, an upgraded Suncorp will look just fine as the “face” of the olympics.

The Stadium Australia rebuild that got scrapped was estimated at $1.25b in 2017. The Victoria park idea would have been one of the most expensive stadiums in the world at $3.4b Australian, according to a couple lists I found anyway and all other stadiums on that list were way bigger than 50-55k. To use a relevant example Allegiant stadium was $1.9b USD in 2020.
