The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Ridiculous estimates like those only get thrown out when the people doing the estimating don't actually want to build the thing.

A new stadium in Canberra anytime in the next couple decades is dead, and has been for a few years now.

The only way the Raiders and NRL could change that is if; A. they convince the Federal government to step in (fat chance), or B. they play hardball and do something radical, i.e. threaten to relocate the team as that's really the only card they have up their sleeve that could give them any leverage over the government at all.

Aside from the two options above they're basically left with finding a way to build their own stadium, which is a pipedream at this point, or hoping and praying that a Liberal government gets voted in sometime soon, which is significantly less likely than the Feds stepping in.

BTW, isn't it curious how inflation hasn't significantly effected the costs to upgrade Manuka LOL.

So simple isn't it...

Let's spell out some facts. No one else bid. You know why? Because the games are becoming ridiculously expensive to host, hence the IOC's pivot towards more financially sustainable games.
No quite right. The process changed In 2019. The IOC selects a preferred bidder who is the only one to submit a full bid. 14 cities/regions were interested in hosting and five plus Brisbane submitted ‘pre-bids’. Those five were told that Brisbane would be hosting, subject to the IOC receiving Brisbane’s full bid. The process also happened during COVID so it was somewhat of a secondary priority for some cities/countries.

There are already three countries with official registered ‘pre-bids’ to host in 2036 and likely to be up to 10 more.

Would those same cities of bid IF they needed to fund it under the old model?

I can't imagine Indonesia or Chile having the finances to do so. In fact Chile mentioned that they can update existing sporting facilities as part of why they bid

Olympics or not Suncorp will get expanded anyway given the need for it

Qld don’t want their economy to go the way of Victoria so saddling it with billions in new debt for a white elephant is crazy

The EoI's at that time were under the old model, so the obvious answer is yes.
