From a News Corp article today

“While plans are still in their infancy, Mestrov did say talks were gently progressing around the possibility of increasing the crowd capacity at Brookvale.

“Further details of Manly’s proposed Brookvale Oval redevelopment will emerge over the next year.”

Clickbait.
It's the off-season and they have nothing else to talk about.

Good. Stack it with RL personalities can only be a good thing.
Tim Mander former NRL referee is also apart of the Liberal QLD Gov.
Responsibilities include major events, sport and recreation, racing and Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
So with any luck Suncorp gets its major upgrade with 72k seats and the afl get left with a refurbed Gabba with the same capacity.

The Olympics before Brisbane, that main stadium will be rectangular. The last Olympics held the opening ceremony on a river.

Having a rectangular stadium host the big ceremonies could become the norm and have the track and field at another stadium.

Gabba has a limited shelf life due to its footprint. I sincerely hope that's the option taken now that QSAC is off the table because it leaves the fumblers homeless for not much upside when they move back in.

Any Queensland Govt would understand that Suncorp drives events and revenue like no other stadium in Brisbane does and for that reason would want to ensure some money gets spent there.

The modern Olympics are 140 years old and a lot has changed in that time. Athletics as a spectator sport has probably become less popular while professional football has become the dominant draw card at big stadiums around the world. It’s time the Olympics adjusted to that reality.

After venturing to the MCG multiple times - which is in the middle of a large park - it seems nonsensical to spend billions on a stadium squashed in on all 4 sides by very busy roads. Especially if it means the stands have to be built high & steep to try and fit the capacity in - that would make a crap viewing experience.

Large stadiums belong in parks, and the other major cities have all followed the same design principle too which make for a far nicer atmosphere & safer entry/exit from the stadium and means the stadiums can easily be expanded in the future.

The Gabba was poorly located at the start & if they spend billions trying to rebuild it at the same location well that will be a substandard result for it - albeit better than no result at all I guess.

With cricket already having dumped the Gabba, I wonder if the Lions would consider a new home elsewhere if Qld / Brisbane don't seem to think they deserve a decent stadium? You'd think with the Lions recent success and evergrowing membership & supporter base that they are foregoing a large amount of money every home game being limited to just 37,000 ticket sales per match. Not to mention the finals where they could have probably sold out a 60k stadium multiple times the last few years.

Also seems strange the state Gov't seems to have no interest whatsoever in the local economy....all the jobs & tourism that would flow on from keeping cricket and having much larger crowds each home game...wonder how many millions losing the opening test has cost the local economy....and how many jobs? And lack of tv exposure for Brisbane....could go on but what's the point!

Sorry to again have say this, but f**kc cricket and f**kc AFL, this is a pretty good post regarding the gabba, but this is a RL forum and it goes against the grain of what in the best interests of the RL sport, both codes have for too often collaborated with hands out to often gain govt grants in thier favour, whilst RL get SweetFA, so I hope the gabba gets the least effort possible

Cricket will get a stadium in Brisbane be it an upgraded Gabba (most likely) or a new one.

Brisbane has fallen to 4th in the pecking order for test cricket and world cup events. Ashes and tests against India as well as world cup quarter and semi finals pump millions into state economies, Queensland won't want to miss out.

The peanuts vying for the prize of bestest rugby league fan eva who are obsessed with fumbleball might need reminding of that.

Getting a little of topic here. But I do laugh when cricket people (Crash mostly) says the the Gabba is now the 5th Test Cricket venue.

I mean who else is getting a test off Brisbane? Hobart? Canberra? LOL I ain't happening. Even an old Gabba still draws more. Hobart is lucky to average 3000 people a day when they got test matches and needed the Federal Government to chip in some money back in 2022 to get the Perth Ashes test during covid.

Queensland Cricket has more pull at CA board level than Cricket Tas or ACT Cricket. So will always get games.

There are only 5 tests now in Australian Summers. *26/27 Melbourne will get 2, with the 150 Anniversary test. Gabba was expected to be out of action. They ain't missing out. Plus they will always pick up an Limited overs game and have their Heat games.

Also India and England play 5 tests so Brisbane will get those tests. Other years will be what ever the touring sides are.

Don't let the 5th test venue fool anyone.

Give the Gabba some money to revamp it for the Olympics. Make the pitch a drop in, so more concerts can happen in the city and not put all the heaving lifting on Suncorp for major events.

Being 5th in line is ok now, but with the IPL and associated leagues gaining prevalence, it becomes a problem in future years if there are only three or four tests each summer.
