Funny graph

Easts have NEVER had any part of the CBD West of George St (Balmain/Glebe) or south of Liverpool St (Souths)

And Wests always had Auburn /Lidcombe

While Dogs have Liverpool to Bankstown

Wests lost their traditional area when they moved to Campbelltown.
Dogs got a lot of it, Berala Bears, Enfield Feds etc. Balmain picked up Five Dock. Not sure if Parra got anything, but Lidcombe out would be a possibility if they did.

Upgrading / expanding old stadiums is generally a waste of time and money. Eventually they need to be knocked down. A new build is the go. Suncorp has about 15 years of useful life left. Why spend hundreds of millions for 2032 when the whole thing will need replacing five to 10 years later?

The Gabba/VicTori’s Park will be rebuilt slightly more narrow, so a fraction better for rectangular sports. I would wait until the Gabba is available, the do a full rebuild of Suncorp at 65k after 2032. Broncos can play at the Gabba while it is rebuilt.

Otherwise, the new oval stadium will be Queensland’s main stadium.

In times of austerity, good future planning isn't really a consideration for government's especially those that may or may not last more than one election cycle.

Its highly likely that the "lipstick on a pig" option gets chosen and the Gabba gets all the money.

PS this typo of your "VicTori" is hilariously apt and explains how some Qlders feel about Aussie Rules fans.

One domino is falling when it comes to the Auckland stadium conundrum.

Speedway will leave Western Springs after this summer.

What impact does this have for any proposed developments
It really depends on what Auckland Council approves for Western Springs.

In a previous strategy, it was earmarked for a cricket oval - not sure if that's still in the plans, but I'd really like cricket to go there so that any future MAIN stadium (60k ish capacity) build/refurbishment can be rectangular for concerts & footy codes ONLY.

A recent proposal from the Auckland A-league club was for a boutique stadium for their team.. now if that can be part of a Western Springs precinct with a cricket oval, they might be onto something - especially if the club's owners finance the boutique footy stadium part themselves.

So Cricket moves out of Eden park which means it’s more likely it gets redone as a rectangle or a new stadium is built downtown ?

Dream scenario IMO would be..

* Cricket at Western Springs (New oval)

* Footy/concerts at big new CBD stadium - maybe even a covered one, with a "club mode" lower bowl.

Now, what happens with a boutique stadium at Western Springs and/or Mount Smart is interesting. Maybe if the Warriors vacate Mount Smart for the CBD stadium & the A-league team builds a small boutique ground at Western Springs, then Mount Smart could even be restored to being a primarily athletics venue with a running track back in place??

Who owns mt smart

The land could be sold for development to help fund a new stadium / upgraded Eden park

Council owns it - and the space there has 2 stadiums currently - #1 ground which is configured for footy & #2 ground which has an athletics track, but very limited seating.

Depending on costs, I suppose they could always demolish one to be sold & upgrade the other.

Maybe even just putting some new stands on #2 around it's existing track if restoring a track on #1 is too expensive/difficult.

Mt smart was kinda oval too wasn’t it

I remember a running track on the main side and the stand shaped around it

The South Island is leaving the rest of nz to shame when it comes to stadia that’s for sure

I wholeheartedly agree - not just identifying that cricket & footy have vastly different needs, and making a ground for each that suits that - but also having decisiveness to make the plan and carry it out.

The contrast with Auckland's lumbering indecision is stark.

There was some talk earlier in the week to build the Olympic stadium on the old Toombul shopping centre site. They seemed to think it’d the LNP Govts preferred location but the place floods in 3mm of rain

My Smart was originally an athletics ground.
but it’s been almost fully converted to rectangular, when the east stand was built the playing surface was moved up closer to the western stand and the eastern stand was built over the old track. It’s been a pure rectangle for the past 20 years.

no that can’t happen- that ship sailed when the eastern was constructed. There isn’t room for an athletics track between the main stands at Mt Smart now.
A better option for Athletics would be North Harbour- with it having one big stand on the east side it’d be pretty ideally suited for that conversion.
