Yes and No
The LA Coliseum was originally an Olympic Stadium with a standard athletics track. It was redeveloped by dropping the ground level and moving the seats closer. For LA 2028 , they will raise the ground level back to its original position with a temporary platform.

Not possible for Suncorp

Wooh! Thanks for the history lesson.

It is a shame a similar plan wasnt put in place for Accor (i wonder if it could be done now…)

So let's say you attend 1 game per week.
Let's call that 25 games per year.
Divide 1000 by 25 and that’s 40.
So the bestest rugby league fan eva! Has attended, on average 25 NRL games per year for 40 years! Of course our hero is better than that! He attends 50 games a year! For 20 years!

What a great feat, even through the covid years, the years where he stopped watching league and became a swans member. All the while updating us with tiktoks! This little trooper couldn't be stopped as he earned the deserved title of:
Bestest rugby league fan eva!!

Sorry for going off topic, but our hero deserves recognition. Perhaps they'll name a future NRL stadium after him!
Yes I did laugh at that claim. 1000 games?

It probably could be done at Accor,as sight lines of the upper decks hasn't changed since the 2000 Olympics.

i wonder what the cost would be.

tear out the whole lower bowl, and build in 2 tiers (new corpoate boxes would be around current ground level).

chuck curtains across the upper decks and just reopen for the major events. Probably a capacity of 100k for big events

Accor is a total demolish job

The stands aren’t close to the field in some sections and then have a really low rake to make the view even worse

The normal stadium members seats are absolutely useless and even the old centre line seats below the coaches boxes it’s still average

Unlike say Suncorp where even in the back corners on level one the view is decent

It’s a shame Brisbane hasn’t learned from the mistakes of the Sydney Olympics

Nothing wrong with the stadium as built for the Olympics: A large capacity round stadium was required. Although not perfect it increased capacity for for major rectangular sporting events by 40000 (compared to the SFS 40000). At one point over 100000 could fit there.

As stated before, if you are going to bid for the Olympics you must have the required facilities: Sydney didn't and so built them.

Post Olympics decisions were made, influenced by your sport, that did not take into account the needs of the major users.

To say it needs demolishing in this financial environment is absolutely stupid. The fact is this: no NSW government is going to knock down a perfectly serviceable stadium and build a new one because 'rakes' and 'seating configurations' aren't perfect.

The biggest miracle of course is how you can judge all this from your position in the swans members!

Agree, but even with a rebuild (say 84K again), the back 32k are going to be further away with worse views than the back row of a Suncorp. If you want a monsterous stadium you have to accept lots of crap seats.

They would still be around 15 metres closer to the field than now

The lower two bowls could be exactly like Suncorp which would cover any club games there

Grand finals and origins sell out regardless

In general I’m not a fan of nrl clubs playing at 80k stadium except for special events

Allianz is perfect for club games

This is my Brisbane solution:-
1. 50k Olympic oval stadium @ Victoria Park
2. The day after the Olympics, the Gabba is demolished and a new 70k rectangular stadium is built there (the Gabba site is slightly larger than Suncorp)
3. When that is ready, Suncorp is downsized to 20k - 25k for soccer, RU, trials, NRLW, etc.

Concerts to be held at any of those three, depending on the popularity of the act.

Clearly they have, or they'd be building an Olympic stadium which then replaced Suncorp.
The plans to use Suncorp for the opening and closing ceremonies would’ve been learning from Sydney

Building a 50k oval is a huge white elephant whilst Suncorp will be aging and having capacity constraints

Victoria Park really isn't that convenient for food and drinks pre and post game. Depending on the exact location of the stadium, Fortitude Valley is a good 1.5 km away. Spring Hill is a little closer but it's a dead zone in terms of nightlife. Nothing in Herston to the north.

If you think of the Gabba as a cricket ground and not a fumble ball stadium then it is too small especially compared with other cricket grounds in smaller states. In a city the size of Brisbane a cricket ground with a 50000 capacity and a rectangular ground with a 70000 capacity makes perfect sense.

I went to the Cold Chisel concert there in November. Hotel in Spring Hill. Alliance Hotel notwithstanding, was pretty dull compared to the Gabba/Caxton St and still a pain to walk to/back.

Cricket rarely draws big crowds compared to other sports. You have a misconception about that requirement.

It just isn't the main game like boring Adelaide, where it is the social gathering of the season.

Smaller ground smaller crowds. Look I get it. We don’t want the fumblers getting any advantage in Brisbane but the fact is Cricket Australia on the face of it has an arguable case. I couldn’t give a flying feck about cricket but we have to be realistic here.
