Is Suncorp hosting any union World Cup games at all ? If not that’s a huge rebuff for Brisbane

Looks like the nsw govt paid decent money to get a lot of events

That post Olympic Games white elephant legacy is looking spot on with Brisbane missing out due to not having the capacity at Suncorp
Suncorp has been named as one of the tournament venues, so will at least get some matches.

Accor Stadium, Allianz Stadium, McDonald Jones Stadium, Suncorp Stadium, QCB Stadium, Optus Stadium & Adelaide Oval will be the 7 venues used.

Reports confirming the 2027 Rugby World Cup final will be held at Stadium Australia (as expected) , which will also host both semi finals and the 3rd place match.

Suncorp Stadium has been deemed too small to even host a semi. If that doesn't scream upgrade to the Qld government I don't know what will.

Perth is tipped to host the opening match. With Townsville Adelaide and Newcastle all hosting Pool games. Victoria has been snubbed completely. With zero matches for the whole tournament. f**king lol.

It will be interesting to see if any work is done to Newcastle before the tournament. Hopefully filling in the ends to get capacity back above 35k.

Suncorp sold out 10 times last year for League alone, probably closer to 20 once you factor in concerts and Soccer & Union Internationals. Brisbane is starting to outgrow it which should be pointed out at every opportunity, 3rd biggest city in Australia with only the 6th biggest stadium.

It’d be a great if Newcastle could get some upgrades off the back of this.

No surprise in Accor hosting the semis and Final.
Sydney has been hosting all the major events for the past 30 years
Melbourne only care about AFL and Suncorp is a boutique stadium that isnt suitable for an event like this.

Theirs the deal to keep the grand final in Sydney

They will probably count the 300 million on Penrith as part of it leaving 500 million

But the nsw govt has a hard on for building a roof at Accor so it can get the union wc final

The current deal where they’ve spent over 1.5 billion on stadiums and centres of excellence plus pay the nrl 8 to 10 million a year to keep the grand final is actually a better result lol
Those centres of excellence are a massive waste of money.

Football is the key here.

If Tasmania has any interest in one day being part of the A-league, then some kind of rectangular stadium will need to be made for it.
The A League is close to collapse. It is not sustainable in its current from and the introduction of the second division (Sth Hobart has applied) will be the final nail in the coffin.

South Hobart is a big club. Play out of Wellesley Park in Hobart which was home to rugby league in the 90s. Very small in goals with a cement wall at one end. Watched a fella run straight into the wall after a vein attempt to tackle another fella one day. Went to hospital. Don’t think he played again.

Victoria being shut out is a great result for NRL and the Storm. RA was going to get $100 million, regardless of where matches are held. Victoria will always be AFL territory, but this decision ensures the NRL will remain and always will be the dominant other oval football code in the second biggest state of Australia. Rugby Union will never have the money and resources to force their way back.

Correct. This is a case of RU ‘cutting off its nose to spite its face’. Melbourne has always been Australia’s third biggest RU market, and 100k @ MCG would fill their coffers. Massive mistake, but one to celebrate.

Why are we all convinced that sellouts mean that a stadium is too small? In USA, stadiums are built to capacity that will sellout each game. Similar to the established Premier League clubs and most soccer clubs around the world. Regular full houses is the best financial model, and guarantees an awesome atmosphere and experience. It also creates demand.

MCG, SCG, Newcastle, Brookvale, Adelaide Oval, Gabba and Suncorp all sell out regularly. Perhaps they the perfect size.

Surprised Meme GIF

about Suncorp not being selected for this.

Depends on the context of each situation. Those NFL & EPL teams that you mention would either have a large stadium already so no urgent need for an upsize, or if not most would be looking for upgrades when the demand is there.

Brisbane having the 6th biggest stadium in Australia shows they are falling behind and sooner rather than later they’ll need to go from a mid-sized stadium to that next level of 60k+.

Makes sense - after all.. with that much money sunk into it, you'd think the Tasmanian Government would want maximum use out of it - and the AFL team can only occupy a day every 2nd weekend over the AFL season.

Sure it won't be optimal for rectangular field sports, but that won't stop them fishing for content to help fill out the calendar... and it'll be interesting to see if that means A-league & NRL games there - especially if the turnout for those games pushes a case for a rectangular stadium in the future.

Hahahahahahaha....

Accpording to report in the Daily Telegraph today, Melbourne is not part of the 2027 RU World Cup as the Victorian Government decided to protest the Rebels exclusion from Super Rugby so won't put in any money.

Accor in Sydney is unliklely to host the opening game as its only a couple of day either side of the NRL Grand Final (can't remember if its just before or just after).

Just before. Two days in fact.
The opening game will be in Perth.
Anyhow suck shit Victoria.
They missed the biggest games at the Woman's Football World Cup as well.
I've no doubt the AFL plays a part in decisions like this by the Victorian govt.
