If that`s true, then really NSW should have paid way unders (if anything) as there was really nowhere else with a big enough stadium to be a serious alternative.Accpording to report in the Daily Telegraph today, Melbourne is not part of the 2027 RU World Cup as the Victorian Government decided to protest the Rebels exclusion from Super Rugby so won't put in any money.
Accor in Sydney is unliklely to host the opening game as its only a couple of day either side of the NRL Grand Final (can't remember if its just before or just after).
As if the AFL has any part in such decisions. They would love Marvel to host RU WC games, just as they were happy to host Storm during the WWC.Just before. Two days in fact.
The opening game will be in Perth.
Anyhow suck shit Victoria.
They missed the biggest games at the Woman's Football World Cup as well.
I've no doubt the AFL plays a part in decisions like this by the Victorian govt.
Maybe they could bid for the next commonwealth games? As if the AFL has any part in such decisions. They would love Marvel to host RU WC games, just as they were happy to host Storm during the WWC.
Victoria is broke and can’t afford to pay for something that most people have no interest in.
Which sports do the AFL hate? Are there any they like? Maybe Rugby League? If the AFL is happy to host Storm at a time when there were no other options, do you really think they are worried enough about Union and Soccer (minor spectator sports here) to lobby the state government not to bid for games? And, even if they did, why would the government take heed? The Vic government would love those games. Your paranoia is affecting your thinking. The AFL does not run Victoria. That's not a convincing argument.
Victoria has missed out on playing a major part in two of the biggest tournaments this country has seen in a decade.
It just so happens that they are two sports the AFL hates.
Sporting capital of Australia my arse.
And that's likely what they will host in 2027.Hosted 7 games including 2 quarter finals, only one match didn't get above 40k (Fiji vs USA)
but it would give the AFL an opportunity to get photos with Antoine Dupont holding a Sherrin and the Age could write "which AFL stars would dominate the RWC" articles. That's not a convincing argument.

Mate, Victoria is BROKE, they can't afford it. The RWC is held "out of season" with the AFL anyway. That's not a convincing argument.

I’m pretty sure the AFL is uncomfortable with the existence of any sport that threatens its little world. I’m sure it has undue influence over the Victorian government. I’m convinced it had nothing to do with the government’s decision not to bid for World Cup games.Which sports do the AFL hate? Are there any they like? Maybe Rugby League? Cricket. AFL loves cricket, because it’s the reason they get to dictate terms on stadiums to everybody.Which sports do the AFL hate? Are there any they like? Maybe Rugby League? Except stadium rationalisation will never work in Sydney. There is no choice but to upgrade the suburban grounds. In the long run it will be the better option anyway.Love or hate AFL, their head office to a degree runs the game better than NRL head office and dictates where games are played in terms of having only 2 grounds in Melbourne. In Perth they built Optus which is shared by the 2 AFL teams with cricket, in Adelaide they upgraded Adelaide Oval which is also shared by the 2 AFL teams and cricket. With Sydney, which has a similar number of NRL teams compared to AFL teams in Melbourne, each NRL team wants its own Allianz or Commbank stadium and this is simply not going to happen. If NRL head office said we are only going to play from say 3, maybe 4 at maximum stadiums, and lobbied govt to build these stadiums (of which 2 already exist) I am sure it would gain traction rather than every club wanting 50m or whatever to upgrade their own suburban ground.
The NRL needs to get better at playing the voting game with politicians in NSW and draw on the supporter base it has in this state.
The NRL has shown its hand by supporting the codes two biggest dumps. Advocating the renovation of Leichhardt oval is sticking lipstick on a dead pig. Buying the hotel next door to the Sharks ground is also a clear sign it supporting suburban grounds whatever the merits. I’ve given up going back to shark park. FMD it’s a shit hole these days.Except stadium rationalisation will never work in Sydney. There is no choice but to upgrade the suburban grounds. In the long run it will be the better option anyway.
Imagine if every Sydney team played out of 2 stadiums. How f**king boring would that be. I don't know how the Victorians do it. It makes AFL shitter than it already is.
