I dont think the AFL played any part.
The couldve played a few games at AAMI Park even if this was true.
Reality is that Dan Andrews and his socialist cronies has sent Victoria broke and they cant borrow anymore

Accpording to report in the Daily Telegraph today, Melbourne is not part of the 2027 RU World Cup as the Victorian Government decided to protest the Rebels exclusion from Super Rugby so won't put in any money.

Accor in Sydney is unliklely to host the opening game as its only a couple of day either side of the NRL Grand Final (can't remember if its just before or just after).
If that`s true, then really NSW should have paid way unders (if anything) as there was really nowhere else with a big enough stadium to be a serious alternative.

Just before. Two days in fact.
The opening game will be in Perth.
Anyhow suck shit Victoria.
They missed the biggest games at the Woman's Football World Cup as well.
I've no doubt the AFL plays a part in decisions like this by the Victorian govt.
As if the AFL has any part in such decisions. They would love Marvel to host RU WC games, just as they were happy to host Storm during the WWC.

Victoria is broke and can’t afford to pay for something that most people have no interest in.

That's not a convincing argument.
Victoria has missed out on playing a major part in two of the biggest tournaments this country has seen in a decade.
It just so happens that they are two sports the AFL hates.
Sporting capital of Australia my arse.

Which sports do the AFL hate? Are there any they like? Maybe Rugby League? If the AFL is happy to host Storm at a time when there were no other options, do you really think they are worried enough about Union and Soccer (minor spectator sports here) to lobby the state government not to bid for games? And, even if they did, why would the government take heed? The Vic government would love those games. Your paranoia is affecting your thinking. The AFL does not run Victoria.

but it would give the AFL an opportunity to get photos with Antoine Dupont holding a Sherrin and the Age could write "which AFL stars would dominate the RWC" articles.

Mate, Victoria is BROKE, they can't afford it. The RWC is held "out of season" with the AFL anyway.

How do you explain the MCG(MCC) hosting the British Lions in the middle of the AFL season this year then?

They wouldn't give two shits what the AFL think if there is a buck in it for them.

Do you think the AFL scuppered the Comm games to?

I’m pretty sure the AFL is uncomfortable with the existence of any sport that threatens its little world. I’m sure it has undue influence over the Victorian government. I’m convinced it had nothing to do with the government’s decision not to bid for World Cup games.

Cricket. AFL loves cricket, because it’s the reason they get to dictate terms on stadiums to everybody.

Love or hate AFL, their head office to a degree runs the game better than NRL head office and dictates where games are played in terms of having only 2 grounds in Melbourne. In Perth they built Optus which is shared by the 2 AFL teams with cricket, in Adelaide they upgraded Adelaide Oval which is also shared by the 2 AFL teams and cricket. With Sydney, which has a similar number of NRL teams compared to AFL teams in Melbourne, each NRL team wants its own Allianz or Commbank stadium and this is simply not going to happen. If NRL head office said we are only going to play from say 3, maybe 4 at maximum stadiums, and lobbied govt to build these stadiums (of which 2 already exist) I am sure it would gain traction rather than every club wanting 50m or whatever to upgrade their own suburban ground.

The NRL needs to get better at playing the voting game with politicians in NSW and draw on the supporter base it has in this state.

Except stadium rationalisation will never work in Sydney. There is no choice but to upgrade the suburban grounds. In the long run it will be the better option anyway.

Imagine if every Sydney team played out of 2 stadiums. How f**king boring would that be. I don't know how the Victorians do it. It makes AFL shitter than it already is.

The NRL has shown its hand by supporting the codes two biggest dumps. Advocating the renovation of Leichhardt oval is sticking lipstick on a dead pig. Buying the hotel next door to the Sharks ground is also a clear sign it supporting suburban grounds whatever the merits. I’ve given up going back to shark park. FMD it’s a shit hole these days.

World Rugby along with FIFA have deemed Accor to be still the best Stadium in the country for the big events.

Accor will host a car race only one here, As far as concerts Taylor Swift and Oasis had the options of anywhere here and chose Accor.

While Accor is getting that then any renovations will be seen as not essential.

While I agree more could be spent on Suburban grounds. NRL clubs have the option to use brand new ones in CommBank and Allianz.

Further to that every NRL club has received funding for CoE's, So Sydney clubs will struggle to cry poor in regards to that as well.

Nurses and Rail worker pay issues the majority of the public will see as more important

You’ll probably never get Sydney down to 3-4 stadiums and it wouldn’t really work for Sydney anyway. A bit of a balance between the central and suburban could happen slowly over time but I doubt you’d ever get Manly or Cronulla to Allianz full time even if their grounds are in shit nick.

In saying that the Sydney situation isn’t that far away from having a good set up. Upgrade Brookvale to 20k+ and Manly are good. Likewise Dragons with Wollongong and Tigers with Campbelltown, they can use Allianz, Kogarah & Leichhardt as well but those 2 should be their main grounds going forward. Sharks are probably the furthest away and least likely to get funding but once the Leagues club is done they should have a higher capacity again.

An Accor rebuild will happen eventually, it’s 25 years old and counting.
