The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Except stadium rationalisation will never work in Sydney. There is no choice but to upgrade the suburban grounds. In the long run it will be the better option anyway.

Imagine if every Sydney team played out of 2 stadiums. How f**king boring would that be. I don't know how the Victorians do it. It makes AFL shitter than it already is.

yeh, they average 40-60k crowds at the central stadiums. I would weep is that was the NRL……………..

its very easy to say that “it just wouldn’t work in Sydney”. Except that all of the evidence points to you being wrong.

the worst performing “central stadiums had 18k average. The BEST suburban ground have 19k.

those central ground go up to 23k average. Those suburbs go down to 10k.

18k average in a 84k seat Stadium is good?

So it is perspective.

Penrith averaged 20k at Penrith this year, That will drop to about 15k at CommBank next season.

If the clubs can make the finances work give me smaller grounds sold out > Big soulless empty venues

Dont know anyone's advocating building more 84k stadiums?
Commbank size, perfect for RL. Ideally all NRL stadiums would be 25k+ to be eligible to host games.

Central stadiums I guess get you there quicker as Govt only has to build a couple and the right transport infrastructure. Sydneys solution probably lies somewhere between centralised and every club having its own (or two lol) suburban stadiums.
If clubs can afford to build their own, go for it, if youre asking for taxpayers to pay for it then its hard to justify 8 or 9 developed stadiums in Sydney.

You and others that want this approach will get a perfect example to see why it doesn't work.

A successful team playing out of a neutral 30k Stadium... ave 20k last year. Lets see how far it drops.

Looking at CommBank only not the BS Magic Round home game inflating the average. The 6pm Friday game v Cows especially will be a hard slog for the marketing team to get a crowd too

If clubs can't make their grounds work then they have the option to move. Also lost here is these grounds aren't like the UK model were they are only for NRL clubs.

Even a shit hole like Leichhardt is used 100 times a year

NRl and its clubs havent even started to try and seriously fill stadiums yet. Theres so much more that could be done. The growth we've seen at places like commbank and Allianz despite lack of effort indicates what fans of the future want, and it aint 20k suburban half developed grounds.

Brookvale sold out ten out of twelve

and the previous fifteen years? 10-13k. One swallow doesnt make a summer.
Even if that is the new norm are Manly going to find the $150mill needed to get it to a modern 25k stadium? Probably not, but if they can great. Just dont keep expecting tax payers to fund them all.

Have you seen souths crowds at Accor lately ?

Brookie will get 250 million from the nsw govt once the grand final deal is locked up

Their are vague plans for the ground to be redeveloped with some connection to the ufc but that sounds like bs

Again no one is saying we should build more Accor's. i think most people acknowledge that it is a bludger of a stadium for 99% of club games.

Have you been to an eels game at Combank or Roosters at Allianz lately? That should be where NRl is being played, in stadiums like that.

As with anything to do with this. Alot is out of the clubs/NRL control.

Speaking from a Penrith point of view. Memberships and all tickets come with free public transport.

In theory it is great, assuming getting to public transport is easy enough. That is not always the case and is the issue with a lot of the areas of Sydney

Hence why teams are against moving games because it doesn't stack up id if the majority of the fanbase can make the move

What’s the solution for manly dragons and Cronulla ? (Penrith already getting their own stadium)

I did say clubs should move their home games v easts and souths to Allianz

They would make a lot of money doing that and raise their crowd average

Innocent question. Is Penrith Park a good venue? The worst I’ve been to in Sydney is Leichhardt, Shark Park would be next. Easily the best is Allianz.

Middle of the road. 6.5/10 Not horrible but lacking in several areas. The Chairmans clubs was one of the better corporate areas aroun

The views are decent from the seats, the stands will be the height of Newcastle so that should improve it further.

The scrapped plan would of been up there with Allianz.

Spit balling:
Manly and Dragons(PT) to Allianz.
Dragons 5 home games at Allianz (Souths, Roosters, Manly, Eels, Bulldogs) with reciprocal membership deals with those clubs so Dragons Sydney fans get 10 home game membership a year (effectively giving them 8 membership games at Allianz, 1 at Commbank and 1 at Accor), Wollongong fans get 7 home games a year (inc sharks every year) at redeveloped WIN.

Penrith are getting a stadium, all be it only half built.

Tigers 9 games at Commbank and 3 at Campbelltown (more to Campbelltown if it ever gets rebuilt)

Souths to Allianz.

That leaves the NSW govt only having to fund:

Penrith (committed but should be done properly)
Upgrade to WIN
Upgrade to Newcastle (because they deserve it more than any fanbase!)
Upgrade to Campbelltown (if Aleague want to join the party)

Around $850million and sorts out all but 1 NSW NRL club

Sure Manly fans might take some convincing but its hard to justify the money that a one tenant suburban stadium like Brookvale is when there are two world class govt funded stadiums within 45mins of it.

Sharks is the tricky one, probably too far to Allianz and hard to justify a big Govt spend (ala Brookvale) they might just have to find a way to finance it themselves if they want to stay there.

That sees Allianz being used by 3 clubs, Commbank by 2. At least the NSW govt is starting to get some value for money out of its big investments and NRL in Sydney is played increasingly in stadiums befitting the #1 code.

At least you recognize the difficulties for outer Sydney clubs

Of course, Sydneys terrain and years of neglect of a decent transport system creates issues. But if a clubs fanbase is within 45mins of a decent stadium then I dont think its a big ask for them to travel it. But that's just me living in a spread out city where a 30-45min trip to see an event is normal. (But again there is much more the NRL could be doing with the clubs to make it more enticing such as right game scheduling, ticket and food prices etc).

Tigers and Dragons are not outer sydney and no reason they cant be playing in the new stadiums now other than nostalgia and lack of vision to build their fanbases. Manly borderline for Allianz use. Sharks no idea what they can do, I think they are destined to be a forever small club. Penrith getting sorted.

What I dont think is the answer, and will continue to hold things back if people are unwilling to look for alternatives, is expecting a state govt to fund 9-10 quality modern 25k+stadiums in one state.

As of now they have built/committed to 6. Finish these and get the most use out of the ones they've paid for before adding more.

Accor (ok its sht but still its a big stadium they have built and pay for upkeep on)
Allianz
Commbank (the blueprint for all club stadiums imo!, though the train could be closer)
Penrith (75% there when built)
Newcastle (75% there)
WIN (50% there)
