Did anything come of the feasibility study the NSW govt commissioned in April last year for a $300mill accor roof? Sounds like Vlad was in favour. Would they try and fast track it now they have the RUWC final?

Seems unlikely. RWC is just over two and a half years away. If the NSW govt. want to build a roof over ACCOR for the RWC, they better get cracking really soon.

It makes sense but that is a 10 year time thing sadly
Yeah.. will be interesting to see what reaction we get from having a Christchurch-based team playing most of it's home games in an enclosed stadium.

I'm hoping that actually spurs some jealousy across the ditch.. which might just kick-start the next phase of stadium upgrades/rebuilds.

From my experience, Marvel/Docklands is a bit soulless and lacks the atmosphere of an open roof stadium. And particularly day games feel very much like your in a dingy Casino

Hopefully Chch is a lot more natural light and well designed.

To be fair, Marvel is primarily an AFL stadium - a covered rectangular stadium should make for a far better experience at an NRL game.

Correct.

The majority of fans prefer no roof. The same game of cricket or AFL draws 10k better @ MCG compared to Marvel.

Hasn't really spurred jealousy from the stadium in Dunedin for other rugby teams.

I don’t really see a roof as a major necessity in Australia as long as the majority of the seating is well covered. Wouldn’t hurt to have a roof at Canberra maybe, but getting a new stadium is proving hard enough.

If they can get a retractable roof as part of the deal if/when Accor and Suncorp are rebuilt bonus points but not the end of the world if not. Protecting against bad weather cancelling concerts would be the main draw, doubt the governments funding it care much about an NRL or Soccer game being played in the wet.

I’d like to see Accor and Qudos Arena both demolished and rebuilt around 2030 as state of the art 75k and 20k venues, as part of the Homebush bay renewal plans with more entertainment options in the precinct.

$4B to rebuild both venues but tied into a greater urban redevelopment plan of the area costing many more billions total.

Since they can set up one big construction site they can save on some costs doing them together.

That is the one good thing that can happen from hosting the RUWC is officials tell the govt where Accor is lacking. With the threat of losing
Events, if enough promoters etc join PVL in calling it out that moves it along.

Penrith getting a RLWC game as rumoured and also some early non Panthers events, Will help shut up the it is only NRL benefitting group of people.

Making the government able to do this and not get the backlash it currently would

That would work out perfectly if they can get it all done around 2030-2035 to coincide with the metro opening in 2032 (estimated).

Taking my NRL cap off they could also do renovations at Sydney Showgrounds stadium where Thunder & Giants play and throw some money towards sprucing up the athletics, aquatic and tennis facilities. Then pretty much every sport gets benefit out of it to some degree.

In theory Sydney then has a vibrant & accessible sporting/entertainment precinct, what the Olympic legacy should have been, finally.

With Government budgets the way they are these days, the only way this sort of thing is happening would be through joint private public finance model that involved more than just building of stadiums.

Nah, even though it may save some costs, bundling everything up increases the overall cost and decreases the chances of anything happening. Keep it separate. Only ACCOR needs upgrading or replacing anyway.

Well not really, don’t see how it costs more than doing all of it one by one. Doesn’t all need to be done at once, staggered over 5-10 years to refresh the precinct while the metro work and urban renewal is happening.

Accor rebuild would be the main part of course but the other stadiums & arenas can be touched up as part of the renewal as needed, it’ll all be 30+ years old by then.

If and when Accor gets a rebuild I have no doubt the fumblers will run interference again. Night follows day.
