Sounds like a couple of relatively low-pulling matches - the three-time wooden spooner still (probably) in the process of getting their combinations together & the Raiders who frankly haven't one of the NRL's glamour clubs since the late '90s.

Both of which make sense to hold in a smaller ground, if that's really something the Dolphins insist on doing.

Agreed they need to get a move along but let's remember, Sydney was announced late 1993 as the host for 2000 so we are coming up to a similar timeline.

If it were me, I'd be doing the West Gabba stadium over the top of the new train station.

Then sell off the land at Entertainment centre at Boondall and use that money to knock down the Gabba and put in a 15-18k indoor arena for concerts/basketball/whatever. Make a proper entertainment precinct.

Suncorp then gets a new larger western stand to get capacity up to 65-70k. It that means the roof has to get adjusted on that side and it doesn't have the constant profile the whole way around then so be it.

But the problem now is that the process has been taken over by hawkers who'll be able to grab prime inner city real estate in Victoria Park. A massive transfer of public wealth to private hands. It's being sold as a new stadium but it's just one big real estate development.

Losing that huge park, which could be a major asset for the public for years to come is terrible.

I'm far from a tree hugger but i also get that you need a level of green space in a city. Also that land would need some wicked bulldozing as it's steep in some areas.

Vic Park is near a train line but there is no station so for mine the new west gabba site that's being thrown around that's over the top of the train station just makes more sense. That train station is absolutely pointless IMO if there isn't some sporting/entertainment facilities nearby, if they build it at Vic Park then why have a significant station at the Gabba.

Very good point - and I didn't realise that ground only had 10k capacity. That's crazy-small for a regular season game!

It’s ridiculous, they shouldnt be playing nrl games in 10k stadiums.

I feel like Kayo was really just a contingency plan for if the Dolphins had a slow start to their existence as a club. If they’d really struggled for the first few years it would’ve been a better look and less of a financial burden to utilise Kayo, but as it’s turned out they’ve been very successful in drawing fans and it really hasn’t been needed.

Whilst it's an issue, it's not the problem. Dolphins want to play games there.

Because they would be 3rd or 4th choice to use the ground. In that position you need to have a fall back and the one they own they have no such issues

We've had Penrith going from a new bells and whistles build on a new site to a half built place on existing site, Tassie in limbo, Brisbane cant decide what they want to do, still no real plan for Accor and the WA govt pulling back on HBF Park upgrades.

Rename to the Capital Raiders for a year and take 4 games to Wellington. Really ratchet up the pressure. Start reporting every Health and Safety violation every game, including for fans. Let the ACT government know they're looking at a lawsuit if there are any serious incidents at the stadium. If no upgrade annoucements by 2027 (30 years since last upgrade) - say the club will see the ground as derelict by 2030 and will be moving out of the city. Announce the relocation after the Grand Final in 2028 - coincidentally a couple of weeks prior to the next ACT election.

Play a bit of hardball and set dates. Becuase the ACT government at the moment is just delaying and avoiding. Still alot of bullets in the chamber, especially if they can coordinate with the Brumbies and any future Aleague team (they actually probably would have expanded to Canberra last round if they had decent facilties).

How Dunedin, a city of 136,000, can build a stadium of that quality, but Canberra can't.

Are they going to offset loss of green space for Victoria park strategy?!
