Queensland Country Bank Renews North QLD Stadium Rights

Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games The Honourable Tim Mander
Queensland Country Bank re-signs as rights holder of North Queensland Stadium
  • Queensland Country Bank has renewed its naming rights sponsorship for another five years
  • The stadium has hosted 1.25 million patrons, 86 major events and more than 700 community events
  • Further international events including the Rugby World Cup and Brisbane 2032 to inject millions of dollars into the Townsville economy
The Crisafulli Government has announced Queensland Country Bank will remain the naming rights holder of the North Queensland Stadium after renewing its sponsorship and securing a decade-long partnership with Stadiums Queensland.
Since its opening in 2020, the 25,455-seat stadium has hosted around 1.25 million fans across 86 major events and more than 700 community events.
Over the past five years, catering staff have served 150,715 cups of chips and 720,985 soft drinks to fans watching some of the biggest events Australia.
With even more major international events on the horizon - including the Rugby World Cup and Brisbane 2032 - the stadium is poised to play a pivotal role in showcasing the region to the world and injecting millions into the local economy.
Minister for Sport and Racing, and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said the stadium had positioned Townsville as a major sports and events destination.
"There's no doubt that this is one of the best regional venues in Australia," Minister Mander said.
"North Queensland has been through a tough time, but the extension of the naming rights is not only a testament to the success of the venue but a great signal of confidence in the region.
"Queensland Country Bank Stadium has been instrumental in boosting Townsville's economy and tourism, and the incredible response to the P!nk concerts last year is a prime example.
"From the Cowboys to State of Origin, the Matildas, international football, rugby union, and some of the biggest names in music, this venue continues to deliver world-class experiences.
Queensland Country Bank CEO Aaron Newman said the partnership with the stadium had been a huge success.
"Our partnership with Stadiums Queensland has exceeded all expectations, and we've been thrilled that with the support of the State Government, Queensland Country Bank Stadium has been highly successful in attracting major headline events which have made a significant social and economic contribution to the region," said Mr Newman.
"There is no doubt that Queensland Country Bank Stadium has generated significant exposure for our brand that has contributed to our accelerated growth as a bank of choice for Queenslanders, but what we're most proud of is the opportunities the stadium has created for regional Queensland."
"Stadium Queensland's ongoing commitment to providing a world-class venue for the benefit of the region aligns with our vision as a member-owned bank to support regional Queenslanders, and we're delighted to continue to play a role in the growth of North Queensland."
Queensland Country Bank Stadium General Manager Cameron Jones said he was excited to see what the next five years entailed.
"We've got a strong lineup this year with the Cowboys, Wallabies, Nitro Circus and the Rugby World Cup, and I expect us to go from strength to strength off the back of support for recent events," Mr Jones said.

Victoria Park it is. What happens to Suncorp? Just a lick of paint?

Whilst they can create a lovely natural feeling Olympic event site there its a shame the Gabba isnt getting redone and a link up with South bank. That would have created a great entertainment precinct right along that area.

Cant see there being much money left over for Suncorp unless they are going to up the original budget.

This was always going to be the outcome. The trouble with the Gabba is that it would be a great location if it was a greenfield site and a little bit bigger. It would be a nightmare to try and renovate or rebuild what is currently there and would cause massive disruptions to the City. The current Gabba overhangs the roads as it is currently and is too small.

you would probably have to sink Stanley or Vulture street... would be good if they could get rid of the ghastly Telstra exchange on the corner....

PNG club wont play at the national stadium but at a redeveloped 25k capacity SHM stadium.

During the official signing on Wednesday, Prime Minister Marape announced that Sir Hubert Murray Stadium would serve as the home venue for the PNG NRL team’s home games. He stated that this decision aligns with the nation’s long-term commitment to strengthening its presence in the prestigious competition.

While SHMS has been confirmed as the primary home ground, Marape acknowledged that if the stadium is not ready by 2028, the Santos National Football Stadium could serve as a temporary alternative. However, he emphasized that SHMS remains the permanent venue for the team’s future matches.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop assured that efforts are underway to ensure SHMS is fully prepared before 2028. He confirmed that discussions with investors and stakeholders are ongoing to accelerate the necessary upgrades and meet NRL requirements.

The decision to designate SHMS as the PNG NRL team’s home stadium was based on key factors, including its historical significance and larger seating capacity of 25,000, compared to 15,000 at Santos National Football Stadium. Additionally, SHMS features a permanent concrete and steel structure, unlike the scaffold-based setup at Santos.

To meet NRL standards, SHMS will undergo major renovations in two phases. The first phase will focus on internal improvements, such as roofing, seating, lighting, and communications infrastructure. The second phase will involve stadium expansion, featuring a high-rise hotel and car park complex as part of Harbour City’s corporate development plans.

yeah maybe, i mean South bank is already a vibrant entertainment precinct, i don't think its going to suffer because no Olympic stadium... The shame is that the cross river rail is already going there. What rail connections is Victoria Park going to have? The Exhibition station is still quite a walk from where the Stadium would be....
