The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Why spend $1/2bill+ on a few thousand seats that still won't meet the demand? If it takes 10-15 years to replace Suncorp with a 70-75k new stadium so be it. That's a better long term outcome than adding 5k seats now and Suncorp staying at 60k for the next 30 years+. Better to play the long game.

You also have to factor in population growth in SE Qld. It is projected to be around 6 million by 2046, an increase of 2.2 million from 2023 as stated by the link below.

So in the long term, a new 70-75k rectangular venue needs to be considered. As you say, if it takes 10 to 15 years, so be it. Have major events like Magic Round or the GF in alternative years, or thereabouts.

NRL, Rugby and Football need to think decades down the track to cater for population growth and a funding model mix of public and private for the new stadium.

A stadiums QLD report put the useful life of Suncorp at only 8 years longer than the Gabba without significant investment & enhancement to keep up with international standards. The Olympics provided the opportunity to extend its life with a modest upgrade. It is far and away the most used venue in the state with patronage over 1.5m last year, more than double that of the Gabba. By 2032 it is going to look archaic, and there would have to be a fear that the appetite for stadium funding would be pretty poor by then.

Of course it is, otherwise governments wouldn’t be paying the nrl anything for their events, let alone $11m this year alone for the GF. Other states are biding for these events, that is leverage, whether the nrl are serious about moving them is moot, they only need the option.
You can oly make a threat so many times before people reqlise your crying wolf. Vlad has been makimg these threats so many years that no-one takes them seriously. Nsw backed out of stadium funding agreement and there was zero repercussion From nrl. At that point his threats lost any influence.

in reality gf won’t move out of Sydney and there is no other suitable location for magic weekend.

With the Perth bears to be announced shortly giving Perth magic for 3 years could be the way to go

Helps grow rugby league in wa and forces the qld govt to come to the table with stadium upgrades

As sell out origins and double headers have shown fans from eastern states will travel there too

And the premier openly likes rugby league in an af state whilst it’s not sure where the qld govts preferences are

Well done craddock

It's not going to happen.

There isn't enough political will, cash or workforce for any other major stadia works in QLD for the next Decade.

Putting aside all the LU bickering, this is actually a poor outcome for Rugby League in the state for a long time.

Yet the nsw gov just paid $11m to keep the gf this year. So you are patently wrong.

Then, six hours after the announcement, Peter V'Landys opened his big mouth:

ARLC boss Peter V’landys urged the Queensland government not to forget rugby league, saying the future of Magic Round and a possible NRL grand final hinged on an upgrade of Olympic outcast Suncorp Stadium…
By contrast, the NRL’s key rival, AFL, have been given the supreme prize of a new 63,000 seat stadium at Victoria Park which they will use post Games…
“We will be welcoming an announcement as surely the Queensland government won’t forget the most watched sport in Australia,” V’landys said.
“One of Queensland’s major events is Magic Round.
“For Queensland to retain Magic Round, and have any chance of having a grand final, that is all contingent on Suncorp Stadium also getting a major upgrade.
“We have no problem with other sports receiving funding for stadiums but don’t forget the No. 1 sport in Australia.
“Rugby league has to be given the same opportunity.”

Oh my f**king god, you giant embarrassment. You had your chance. There were TWO reviews. They let this run for a hundred days. All you had to do was pick up a copy of the Courier Mail and then pick up the phone to Crisafulli. You were too busy with McDonalds ads, playing Pacific Cold Warrior and Western Bears whisperer, you forgot to vest your interest in the f**king OLYMPIC GAMES.

They were paying to host the NRL GF before the stadium agreement took place. They've just continued to pay for it and not carry out the stadium improvements agreed with NRL. His threats are hollow. If he was serious the Gf would be on the open market every year for bids. But it isnt, and NSW Govt knows it never will be.

Honestly, PVL trying to act tough on this looks absolutely pathetic.

He's been asleep at the wheel.
Last week people were saying that the AFL was worried and panicking. Fast forward five days and PVL is looking and acting like the loser. He may have the loudest voice, but has so far been outplayed when it counts - media rights and this stadium.

Just be patient

The next tv deal will be the biggest in Australian sports history

And most rational people would say getting the nsw govt to spend 1.5 billion on stadia plus another 200 million on centre of excellence whilst also paying 11 million for the nrl grand final is a huge win

Commbank (before his time but still nsw govt expected to keep the grand final)
Allianz
Penrith

When it comes to getting taxpayer money afl just has no shame. Whether nrl should copy that approach is questionable

That means nothing for the sport in QLD, and continues the myopic Sydney view.

Magic Round can't be held anywhere else sustainably than Brisbane, so that is a piss poor threat.

You can't sugarcoat that this is a bad deal for RL in QLD

ya dont think barlow park for northern pride and sunny coast stadium for falcons means nothing for the sport in qld? id say those 2 regions got a pretty good leg up here. depends how you value the grassroots though
