The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Look I'm into architecture as much as the next man, but very few people go on a holiday to view a stadium (unless it's the Colosseum in Rome).
Its more about if you are already on holidays in the general vicinity will you go check out the sports venue or is it one of the things you do when in the town - like a week in New York most sports fans or even non-sports fans are going to Yankee stadium. I'd say there would be a few dozen such venues around the world.

Won’t work. Literally what I’ve stated previously re: corners and provisions is the only capacity expansion course as per original design and specifications.

There’s fire engineering, access/egress and certification issues with what you’re proposing.

Could this be done ?-

Close off Castlemaine street and knock the old west stand down and expand it both upwards and outwards? Obvs the roof line would have to go upwards in the west corners to accomodate it and it would lose the symmetry of the roof line it currently has.

The west side really shows its age when you walk through the lower level compared to the rest of suncorp, i'm actually surprised it passes fire code as when you walk through the lower level concourse after a game, it's very tight and restrictive.

If they did a full knockdown and rebuild
on the same site and wanted 70-75k, they would have to build over the top of Hale St and slide the whole thing eastward 30-40m.

Honestly you could do whatever really but the feasibility of it is an entirely different conversation.

Few things worth mentioning - the western stand houses all the services. Stadium operations are also located in the western stand in the basement. Basically by decommissioning the western stand, you will essentially decommission the entire stadium.

The western stand is actually the newest of all the stands. It was built after the other 3 sides of the stadium structure was already completed. This is because it houses critical services ie Energex transformer to power the stadium, mechanical plant room, fire pump room etc.

In the event of a knock down there are massive issues in moving the stadium over to the east 30m-40m. Hale St or ICB is quite literally underneath it. Therein lies massive constructibility issues and I’d argue these issues would be more impactful than say a Gabba site redevelopment which as you know has 4 main streets surrounding its premises. Building over Castlemaine is also problematic. The slight slope and the fact the bedrock is incredibly rigid and difficult to penetrate (this is because the river is relatively close and once upon a time the river was far wider than it currently is).

Of course none of these issues are permanent or impossible to overcome with astute engineering and project management. It is however incredibly costly and would drag on for quite awhile. Time and money plus the loss of revenue during decommissioning of the stadium or part of the stadium whilst it is being knocked down and rebuilt isn’t appealing to the stakeholders. Not right now anyways.

Cause they’ve put money into other privately owned stadiums

30k stadium at Redcliffe would actually be useful post Olympics

I've been to the current Kayo Stadium a few times over the years. It has one bus service which runs past it. There are no other public transport links to the area (e.g. no rail). Hence putting a 30k seat stadium on that site would require a lot more than just a new stadium to be built, which consequently would increase the cost.

Brisbane roar played a few seasons there already

Instead of building a new 20k rectangular stadium for soccer which will be useless for internationals upgrading the existing kayo stadium makes a whole lot more sense

They are asking for hundreds of millions for a new stadium that will have limited purpose

If Suncorp is given some peanuts, I've just done some capacity calcs. If the level three north and south ends at Suncorp are increased by 6 rows (to match east and west), the capacity would increase to approx 55,000. I'd start there. It would reduce the concourse room a little bit, but they don't let people stand there anyway, and it would still be more spacious than the western level 3 concourse. Health and safety might say otherwise, but I'd certainly start there.

What makes Suncorp world class? Assume it is the viewing angles and crowd atmosphere? The video screens are tiny? How are the amenities? Are there lifts and elevators? Good disability access? Enough toilets? Are the expensive seats padded? Is there no-queue food and drink? If so, by all means add another 2,500 seats. If not, perhaps an amenities upgrade might be more important.

Viewing angles, atmosphere due to noise containers, and proximity to restaurants, bars, and the city are probably the top three strengths. Disability access is also very good on all levels. Toilets not really a problem.

My post is redundant due to crowding/fire/safety issues anyway.

Last time I was there you could get bottled rum on optic. That makes it world class for me!

Big difference chucking a $30-40mill bone at a private or council owned stadium compared to $400mill+ to develop KAYO to a 30k stadium.
