Wow, I just learned that the swans played at the toilet bowl for 14 years. I thought they gave up after one year.

Apparently they played 3 "blockbuster" games and finals there every year. Got some big crowds early but by the end they had trouble getting more than 30k in there.

Stupid f**king cocks. Ruined the stadium to play your shit games. When push came to shove nobody wanted you there. Cocks.

The AFL had to pay $1m and play those games there as part of the deal to keep it oval. The AFL would say money well spent, but it made the venue crap for all sports.

And end up with another Homebush? No good for any code.
Exactly. That would be better for the NRL than to leave it great for AFL. But actually I mean make it convertible to a proper rectangle. There is just no need for another oval. Gabba is fine for all oval sports.

Spitballing here but with the Gabba getting knocked down and no official plan for the site that I know of, I wonder if there is any chance of building a new Rectangular stadium there in the future. Would there be room for a 80k ground?
if Suncorp can’t expand I wonder if miner refurbs and reduced capacity might serve. Regular club games plus Reds & Roar at a reduced Suncorp while the Dolphins & Broncos take marquee and Finals games to a new Gabba ground along with Origin, internationals, and major Concert events.

There is proposed plans for the Gabba site and it doesn’t involve a rectangular stadium.

Campbell Newman has suggested Northshore Hamilton as the location for the Olympic Stadium as an alternative to Victoria Park.

Maybe that site could be a location for a new 70k rectangular stadium down the track.

Meanwhile in Auckland, the council has endorsed upgrading Eden Park, a blow for the bid wanting to build a new stadium downtown.

The council doesn't want to put money into anything, but it sounds like they'll support Eden Park going cap-in-hand to Central Government for the $100mil Eden Park needs.

I see. Do What the AFL did to Homebush? Very sneaky. With the stands being build in an oval shape around a running track, it will only ever be oval, just like Homebush.

I’m no expert on Suncorp, been there only once at Magic Round last year but it seemed an awesome stadium as is.

What upgrade does it need ?
Brisbane should be aiming to be the only big city with a 70k rectangular stadium and thus get all the big NRL, Rugby and soccer games.

It is conceivable that a 65k oval ground (if it is a piece of shit like the MCG or Sydney Olympic Stadium) will never once be filled or even 70% full after the 2 weeks of Olympics.
