Melbourne Storm has welcomed the Labor Party’s election commitment of $10.68m to build a mini rectangular stadium at Casey Fields.
Storm CEO, Justin Rodski, joined Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, Melbourne City FC CEO, Brad Rowse, Federal Member for Holt Cassandra Fernando, and City of Casey Mayor Stefan Koomen for the announcement.
Storm second rower, Joe Chan, U17 female players, Eboni Heurea and Justice Mercedes Huriwai-Daymond, and representatives from local rugby league club, Casey Warriors, were also at the announcement.
The proposed Casey Mini Stadium will help address the growing demand for elite rectangular venues in Victoria that can cater for the growth of both rugby league and football.
“Casey and the surrounding regions are some of the biggest growth areas for rugby league in the state,” Rodski said.
“This new proposed mini stadium will deliver significant benefits to the growing rugby league community in the Casey region and provide Storm with an alternate venue to host elite content in the future. Our junior pathways programs are fast outgrowing the facilities we have at AAMI Park and in Broadmeadows and we see this proposed venue as strategically important for the ongoing development of our game.
“If built, this will be a high-quality venue that will be used by local community sport and also serve as a training hub for Storm’s male and female pathways into the future. Both rugby league and football need facilities to keep up with the growing demand of both sports, particularly in the south east, and we believe this sort of facility is needed to give all athletes the best chance to develop and one day pull on the Storm jersey.”
If delivered, the new Casey Mini Stadium will host Storm junior representative matches for both male and female teams, while also being a possible venue for future NRL trial matches or NRLW matches.
Melbourne Storm has a strong connection with the Casey region with almost 25% of its member base and 32% of all registered players living in the region. Storm has a long-standing partnership with the City of Casey with three trial matches played on the Casey Fields oval in recent years along with a number of community initiatives delivered for residents, students and participants.
Federal Member for Holt, Cassandra Fernando MP, said at the announcement: “Completion of the Casey Mini Stadium will ensure everyone in our community has a world-class sporting and training facility at their doorstep. The Mini-Stadium will be home to community sporting tournaments and will give the children in our area a leg up for training.”
