Melbourne Storm has welcomed the Labor Party’s election commitment of $10.68m to build a mini rectangular stadium at Casey Fields.

Storm CEO, Justin Rodski, joined Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, Melbourne City FC CEO, Brad Rowse, Federal Member for Holt Cassandra Fernando, and City of Casey Mayor Stefan Koomen for the announcement.

Storm second rower, Joe Chan, U17 female players, Eboni Heurea and Justice Mercedes Huriwai-Daymond, and representatives from local rugby league club, Casey Warriors, were also at the announcement.

The proposed Casey Mini Stadium will help address the growing demand for elite rectangular venues in Victoria that can cater for the growth of both rugby league and football.

“Casey and the surrounding regions are some of the biggest growth areas for rugby league in the state,” Rodski said.

“This new proposed mini stadium will deliver significant benefits to the growing rugby league community in the Casey region and provide Storm with an alternate venue to host elite content in the future. Our junior pathways programs are fast outgrowing the facilities we have at AAMI Park and in Broadmeadows and we see this proposed venue as strategically important for the ongoing development of our game.

“If built, this will be a high-quality venue that will be used by local community sport and also serve as a training hub for Storm’s male and female pathways into the future. Both rugby league and football need facilities to keep up with the growing demand of both sports, particularly in the south east, and we believe this sort of facility is needed to give all athletes the best chance to develop and one day pull on the Storm jersey.”

If delivered, the new Casey Mini Stadium will host Storm junior representative matches for both male and female teams, while also being a possible venue for future NRL trial matches or NRLW matches.

Melbourne Storm has a strong connection with the Casey region with almost 25% of its member base and 32% of all registered players living in the region. Storm has a long-standing partnership with the City of Casey with three trial matches played on the Casey Fields oval in recent years along with a number of community initiatives delivered for residents, students and participants.

Federal Member for Holt, Cassandra Fernando MP, said at the announcement: “Completion of the Casey Mini Stadium will ensure everyone in our community has a world-class sporting and training facility at their doorstep. The Mini-Stadium will be home to community sporting tournaments and will give the children in our area a leg up for training.”

We need a Fed election promise list lol
Not that I think they will get in but.....

An elected Dutton Federal LNP Coalition Government will deliver a $15 million investment to support the construction of a dedicated Community, Development and High Performance Centre in the heart of Cairns.

This landmark commitment will cement Cairns as the home of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRLW program, co-located with the Northern Pride at West Barlow Park, and create a new focal point for elite women's sport in Far North Queensland.

Cowboys Chief Executive Officer Jeff Reibel declared, “This is an exciting day for the Cowboys and an exciting day for elite women athletes, and in particular, the talented and powerful women who play the greatest game of all, Rugby League.

“On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor, Shadow Minister for Sport Senator Anne Ruston and LNP Candidate for Leichardt Jeremy Neal for their funding pledge which signifies a momentous investment into our region.

“Cairns and Far North Queensland is home to a legion of Cowboys fans and members and with today’s announcement, it will also be home to our NRLW team.

“Securing a high-performance facility for our women’s team in Cairns secures a pathway for local stars of the future. This was the vision of our founders and to announce its continuation in our Anniversary year is an absolute privilege.

“The construction of a Community, Development and High Performance Centre will provide the opportunity for the community of Cairns and Far North Queensland to access state-of-the-art community and high-performance facilities and provide a regional home base for an expanded Cowboys community team to continue the delivery of our life-changing programs.”
The $15 million capital investment will:

● Provide a major contribution towards delivering a $30M world-class training and recovery facility tailored for the Cowboys NRLW team

● Support the relocation of the Cowboys NRLW program to Cairns

● Strengthen community access to health, sport and wellbeing programs

● Create over 80 construction jobs and over 60 ongoing jobs (full-time equivalent)

● Position Cairns as the premier destination for women’s sport in Northern Australia

The facility will provide high-performance infrastructure for female athletes, integrate allied health and community access features, and expand pathways for local talent – all while injecting millions into the local economy and creating jobs during construction and operation.

The plan has strong local support, including from Cairns Regional Council, Advance Cairns and Tourism Tropical North Queensland. It is also aligned with long-term planning for the Cairns Major Events Precinct and complements the broader sporting legacy of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor stated, “Cairns is one of Australia’s most vibrant and fast-growing regional cities, and this commitment reflects the Coalition’s confidence in its future. Relocating the Cowboys NRLW team to Cairns will boost jobs, energise women’s sport, and create a lasting economic and social impact.

“This is the kind of forward-thinking regional investment we need more of – and only a Coalition Government through prudent economic management will deliver it.”

Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Anne Ruston remarked, “This project is a major step forward for women’s sport and for equity in high-performance infrastructure in regional Australia.

“It is a game-changer for women’s rugby league in Far North Queensland, but it also has far-reaching benefits - it’s about inspiring the next generation of female athletes, boosting community cohesion, and reminding Australians of the mental and physical health benefits of sport.

“Investing in women's sport is essential, especially as we build legacy infrastructure on the green and gold runway to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

“We are focused on investing in local sporting infrastructure to deliver tangible and lasting legacy outcomes for Cairns.”

Jeremy Neal, LNP Candidate for Leichardt commented, “This is a huge win for the people of Cairns and for the future of sport in the Far North. Our region has always punched above its weight when it comes to sporting talent, and this facility will give local girls and women the chance to train, grow and play at the highest level – right here in their hometown.

“As a proud local and a father of three, I know just how powerful sport can be in uniting communities and building resilience. I’m absolutely thrilled that a Dutton Coalition Government will back this game-changing project and deliver the investment we need.”

Why don't they just build another 30,000 seat stadium next door to Accor Stadium. And Nrl allocates all Sydney games to Bankwest Alliance Accor and new Penrith stadium with heritage game once or twice a year at Shark Park Jubilee and Campbelltown etc against Cowboys Titans or the Thursday night 6pm Friday games. Then all the Sydney teams play there Sydney rivals in the right games in right venues. Average should go thru the roof.

Waste of money.
They should've just upgraded ACCOR to the 2019 plan where all stands were demolished and rebuilt as a 75,000 seat rectangular venue. Added the retractable roof and then had intimate mode, where they cover the top decks with a floating material roof. (something like the below)

Here we go again. RL, union and soccer need to hire some of these relentless lobbyists that the cricket/AFL mafia have hired.

If SCG is done before Accor is made a rectangle, every capital city in Australia will have an oval as its biggest stadium.

Yep cricket and afl are just more proactive and better run, soccer and rugby are a shambles. You would think with 3 codes vs 2 there would be more emphasis on rectangular stadiums but there’s not obviously.

Maybe rugby World Cup will spur some stadium upgrades talk

That looks absolutely fantastic. No wonder bandana man was crying for hospitals and schools.

League would kick arse in that stadium.

Total crowds of 2 x oval sports - 10.3m
Total crowds of 3 x rectangular sports - 6.3m
No doubt that helps their argument.

Fathead Maguire on one of those fumble shows was frothing that Tasmania need to man up and build their fancy 2B stadium that will be used a handful of times a year or not have a team. Then that no personality Dillon says that it was signed off by the afl club presidents and it must have a roof and it’s simple as that.

If this stadium goes ahead as is it will be a colossal waste of money and make states think twice about trying to cooperate with afl. It’s clear to all that the afl bullied Tasmania, and also have had massive creativity with getting a business case for the stadium over the line.

Between Brisbane and Hobart that would be 5-6B spent on afl ovals.

What would truly be sweet is that a western bears announcement is made in the next fortnight with a big stadium upgrade supported by state/federal governments, while all this furore over hobart stadium continues, it would really get the afl knickers in a knot.

What’s this bs about stadiums only being good for 30 years? Are they making them out of hay? If it’s going to cost a billion it should last forever.
Some like sfs has issues with disability access and fire exits and the cost of upgrading those was prohibitive

But stadium Australia could go for decades as is

The scg upgrades are just the afl grifting as usual on the public purse

I don’t know why the Gabba was said to be nearing the end of its life and whether that was true or not
